This is a book in the Junior World Biographies series by Chelsea House Publishers.

Though it is written for younger readers, it deals with the essential facts about Sojourner's life. It contains archival photos, posters and anti-slavery illustrations. One list I found especially horrifying was her time-line listing the number of times she was sold and the fact that she was matched with another slave, Thomas, with whom she had five children.

She was a strong woman who later fought for emancipation.

Sojourner Truth is a hero in many ways, and even though I had to stop and explain things at times, I'm not sorry I read this to my son. He has been learning about a bit of black history in school and is just beginning to hear about slavery. The book itself wasn't all that well-written, though. It felt a little too academic in some of the word choices for a kids' biography. Caution: Don't read this to your kid if you think he/she is too young to learn about the horrors of slavery -- the book ...more
