Oddly to some, this still stands as my favorite Roald Dahl book. It's hard for me to pinpoint why, since it's my opinion and I hate examining my opinions too closely, but to take a swing at it:
It's one of the least zany of Dahl's books, which ultimately gives it staying power. With many of his other works, you get caught up in the wacky characters, situations, and goings ons and it's hard to take them as seriously once you get a little bit older and gain a little bit of sophistication. How...more

The movie with Jeremy Irons, his wife, Sinead Cusack, his son and his father-in-law is just as good as the book! Great for all ages.

YA. I got this book as a reward for participating in my library's summer reading program back when I was still short enough to read for cash and prizes. Ironically enough, I never read it. Sab instructed me to do so, and I finally dug it out and gave it a go.

This is a book about Danny and the very best father a boy could ever want. There's something a tad creepy about a boy who idolizes his father this much, but I'm not a boy living alone with his father in the English countryside i...more

In either year 2 or 3 (actually I think it happened both years) my class had a substitute teacher at the end of the year. She was amazing and I adored her. She would always read us stories which of course I loved. As well as this book she also read us Roald Dahls The Witches and The BFG.

Anyways I was totally enthralled with this story and the day she finished it I went home and was RAVING about it and either my brother or mother told me we had a copy of it somewhere that belonged to ...more

My personal favorite RD book. I wanted to live in a cozy gypsy caravan like Danny.

In Wyoming where I grew up, poaching was one of the worst crimes. So when our teacher had us read a book about a young boy and his father who make a habit of it...well I was a little shocked. I was more shocked though at how much I liked Danny and his father.

Danny is such a brave, ingenious, and warm figure, you can't help but cheer for him. He certainly my most favorite child character in any of Roald Dahl's books.

"Danny, the Champion of the World" is about a boy named Danny, he lives in a old gypsy station wagon ever since his mom died. Danny's dad is pretty poor so he works really hard for auto mobiles. But his dad was keeping a secret so important, he couldn't even tell Danny. Danny never knew what his dad did. Until now. When Danny was about nine, he woke in the middle of the night. He found that his dad was not in his bunk. He crept out of his and went to the workshop... He wasn't there eit...more

This is one of the sweetest books in the entire world. Danny and his father live in a little gypsy caravan behind the filling station where they work. Danny's Mum died ages ago and it's just the two of them and they are very happy together.

Then one day his Dad tells him about poaching, and how exciting it is. He teaches Danny the best ways to steal birds off the mean rich man's land and they hatch a plan to steal ALL of them the night before the big hunt to humiliate the mean...more

Any time Roald Dahl came up in conversation over the past several years, at least one of my friends would mention Danny the Champion of the World as his or her favorite book. I was surprised -- I always imagined myself a Roald Dahl fan (as a little kid I must have read Charlie and the Chocolate Factory five times, and my copy of Matilda is dog-eared and faded from frequent use) and I had never heard of Danny until I was an adult. After reading a couple of chapters I turned to these friends and...more

I recently picked up a few RD books cheaply and after some recent long and dense books felt the need for something lighter. I was a huge RD fan as a child and teen (as I imagine most of the world were) but haven't read any of the books in a long while.

I'm not sure I ever read this and couldn't remember a thing about it (I vaguely recall watching an old TV adaptation which I thought was about athletics and was clearly something else entirely)

I'd forgotten how good a story...more

Danny is a kid who lives in an old caravan with his dad and helps out at his father's mechanic station here and there. They have a great relationship, which is probably my favorite thing about this book, and Danny would rather spend time with his dad than anyone else in the world. One day, Danny discovers his father's deep, dark secret, and the next thing you know, they're off together, hatching a plan to get back at the mean and stingy Mr. Hazell, who has a number of pheasants on his land (I ...more

A bit far-fetched. I'd passed by this book many times before and it never caught my interest on account of it being long and the title not being more discriptive. You could be the champion of the world through many things; doing something exceedingly difficult or impossible, inventing something that could cure world hunger, or something else equally huge. Drugging two hundred pheasants is not exactly what I had in mind. All that crap Danny's father talks about poaching being an art. Who in their...more

Danny the Champion of the World was a book I read as a child and re-reading for this review brought back many childhood memories. Roald Dahl was one of my favourites as a child; and to some extent he still is.

This book tells of the relationship between a father and a son. They live near the woods in a caravan and share everything together, until one day Danny finds out that his father has been keeping a secret; pheasant poaching. This now becomes both their secret and Danny begins ...more

Ayahnya Danny memang luar biasa. Meski...more

I read this chapter book to my son recently, and he liked it a lot. It was actually my copy from when I was young; I loved most of the Roald Dahl books, but don't now remember actually having read this one. With my son, I'd already read Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and James and the Giant Peach. I am waiting a bit for The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar. This book is not as fantastical as these other titles—everything that happens is solidly within the realm of the plausible...more

An almost surprisingly cheerful outing with a moral that you must suspect was dear to Dahl's heart. It would be nice to think that there are a few "sparkier" parents thanks to this book. (Everyone who was ever a child must long for moments like the one when Danny's father almost blows the whole adventure because of Danny's mistreatment at school, and every former little boy must be jealous of adventures like the one with the fire balloon.)

That said, the work still contains ...more

…and with that li’l post-script, Roald Dahl sums up the essence of ‘Danny the Champion of the World'.

Another delightful story by Dahl. A simple story plot about Danny and his father's adventure in poaching pheasant from the arrogant landowner - Mr Hazell's wood.

I am not a big fan of birds or any thing with feathers, so I won"t be interested to verified if pheasants actually love raisins or if they would actually stand still if they swallowed a horsehair sandwiched in a raisin which tickles their throat, however, if a situation allows, I wouldn't mind to test if trouts actually li...more

This was my third time reading this. The first was when my 1st grade teacher read it to our class. The second time was to my daughters, and now I just finished reading it to my boys. It is one of my favorite all time children's books, and my favorite Roald Dahl story. The boys were mezmorized by it. Granted, it involves a bit of mischief, and I wouldn't want my kids to emulate that aspect of it. What I love is the fantastic relationship Danny has with his father; and the way his father enj...more

This is my favorite Roald Dahl book of all time. I've read and re-read 18 billion times. It is funny, however, how my reading of it changes now that I'm a parent. I sort of cringe at the thought of reading Roald Dahl out loud with my kids due to the pure evil and meanness of some of the characters. At the same time, his writing is some of the most memorable and vivid to me of things I read as a child.

I can't believe I didn't have this in my bookshelf yet. I have read this book several times and am touched every time I read it! Dahl tells the story of Danny and his father in such a beautiful way that it takes me in every time. This book is a departure from most of Dahl's works. We usually find tragic or horrible circumstances in his books: James of James and the Giant Peach has two horrible aunts that he lives with because his parents were killed by a rampaging rhino, the unfortunate children...more

Ever since reading the following passage as a young school-kid;

I was glad my father was an eye-smiler. It meant he never gave me a fake smile because it's impossible to make your eyes twinkle if you aren't feeling twinkly yourself. A mouth-smile is different. You can fake a mouth-smile any time you want, simply by moving your lips. I've also learned that a real mouth-smile always has an eye-smile to go with it. So watch out, I say, when someone smiles at you but his eyes stay the sa

Nine-year-old Danny has the world’s most wonderful father, which is a good thing because he doesn’t have a mother. He and his father live in an old gypsy caravan outside a small town, and run a gas station. By the time he’s seven, Danny can take apart and put together a small motor, all on his own. But Danny’s real adventures start on the night he discovers his father’s deepest, darkest secret—-and decides to help out.

This is the only Roald Dahl book I really loved, mostly for the lo...more

This is one of my all-time favorite Dahl books, simply because it is so different and much more staying than his other masterpieces.

Danny is the story of a young boy who idolizes his father and the world that he lives in. Growing up in a single parent household, I related to Danny's unwavering devotion to his father - and his struggle to question whether the actions they took were right or wrong. In that sense, i think the story is very strong as a coming-of-age story for Danny who...more
