The first hundred or so pages of this book nearly put me into a coma from boredom. I was so tempted to give up on the book completely and find something more interesting to read. Thankfully, it gets better...but not a whole lot. And like a lot of others have said, the ending left a lot to be desired.

For a lot of the book, it reads like a bunch of random scenes slapped together with no flow or cohesiveness. The early chapters are rather short and every single one jumps to a differ More...

Die in Plain Sight is a romantic suspense novel from Elizabeth Lowell's, who was one of the first authors in that sub-genre. It's fun and fast-paced, but can start to seem repetitive if you've also read other books in the Rarities Unlimited and the St Kilda Consulting series. Like many of her books, the hero is interesting and funny, so the heroine comes across as a little flat in comparison. Blue Smoke and Murder has a similar plot, but the characters are more interesting - I think Lowell does More...

I had been reading a well-written but hard to follow book while going through a lot of life stress. I found this book on the exchange table of my work and it relaxed me, though I cringed at lines like, "Temper burned along Ward's cheekbones." It is set in an area of California that I used to know, coastal Orange County, and involves something called the California plein air school of art. I have no idea if this is a real art movement or not, but the descriptions of the paintings are More...

This is an older book, so I shouldn't have been surprised by the fact it is more of a romantic mystery than what we've come to view as romantic suspense.

By that I mean that the hero and heroine aren't tortured, scarred individuals who can only save on another, as we tend to see in today's romantic suspense/mysteries. Instead, they're reasonably well-adjusted people who are overwhelmingly attracted to each other, and find themselves thrust into a life-or-death mystery.

While I More...

I picked this book from a list of Mystery Audiobooks based on what the library had to say about it. I must have totally glossed over the romance part of their summary. I'm FAR from a prude, but I like my mysteries with a tad less of an in-depth description of the main characters bedroom activities. If you're not expecting it, it can make for a few awkward moments in the car or at work. Other than that, the story was pretty good. I liked the main character well enough, as well as her boyfriend an More...

Originally I was going to give it 3 stars. It's not the book's fault I didn't take sufficiently seriously the frequent repetition of the word "romance" in the review material scattered around the front and back of the book. This is about half romance novel and half mystery. The mystery part was fun, even if I figured it out halfway through, till it went completely over the top at the end.

But with a couple weeks to think about it, not being caught up in the "fun" More...

Die in Plain Sight is a bit of an odd duck in the run of Elizabeth Lowell novels, straddling as it does the line between her Donovan series and her Rarities Unlimited ones. Goodreads classifies it as a Rarities book, but the two series are set in the same universe--and since it provides major camera time to Susa Donovan, the matriarch of the Donovan clan, it's hard not to call this a Donovan book.

Nonetheless the question is, how does this particular book stack up against either serie More...

This is a human, heartwarming, and good mystery wrapped up together. A lady is looking for information on her deceased grandfather who was a painter. She is sure that his painting are just as good as those found in California etc.

Pursuing information is a good bit of the story. I thought the painter was alive, and the was. Will make no sense to you unless you read this good story.

Like many of Ms. Lowell's books, this one is ripe with characters - almost too many to keep them straight. Typical of the St. Kilda, Rarities Unlimited series of books with a likable enough female character and a dashing (and always disarmingly handsome) hero. When I find an author that I like, I tend to read everything they've written, but fear that I will tire of the same style of writing by Ms. Lowell before I exhaust all her books.

I really really really really liked this book. REALLY! :-)

It was a truly unique story and I was immediately drawn into the story of how wheeling and dealing in the art world can be joyful and deadly at the same time. And the ramifications it can lead to.

I felt like I knew the characters and learn more about the art world, provenance of art while still enjoying a light read for the most part.

Great book!

A good writer can weave a story together, a poor one cannot. This is so evident in this novel, thus 70 chapters of each persons view.
The story wasn't bad but it took a long time to get to it.
Also, the bad language was excessive and not necessary. I would not recommend this story.

I really need to pay attention and start recording the books that I have already read. I already listened to this on CD a long while ago. It is a good one! I have a really big weakness-art. This one delves into the art world and gets murder and mayhem and a little romance. Super fun!

While the mystery was interesting, the conversations were wayyyy too clever, (like she'd collected clever sayings for her characters to say), the characters were too beautiful, rich & sexy to be believable. Anyway, it made me groan.

I read this (mostly at the gym) to see what's up with romantic suspense. TONS of characters. Liked the main ones, and she writes great dialogue. To read my entire analysis see my blog at www.breakfastinbed2.wordpress.com/

I haven't read Elizabeth Lowell in a long time and I forgot how much I like her mysteries. There's romance, sure, but it's not all about that. It's not just a romance novel and I appreciate it. Great plot.

I couldn't get into this book. I didn't love the characters, the story was so-so and predictable. I felt the same way with the first book in the Rarities Unlimited series. I haven't read #2 yet and I still plan to read it even though I didn't really care for #1 or #3.

Not as bad as I was predicting. I really enjoyed the non-sexual intimacies that Lowell included between the couple. The plot was fairly predictable however. I don't think I'll be seeking her out as a novelist.

I actually really liked this book, good plot, but the resolution felt like it was rushed at the end and there were a lot of details that the author didn't explain. It felt like someone edited out parts of the book. Unfortunate because it drew me in, but left me a little frustrated.

Enjoyable read, but I really feel like Lowell has covered this ground again (Western art, powerful political clans) in some of her St. Kilda books.

There were so many interesting areas that could have been developed in this book. Perfect for a plane, but not a must read.

My fav so far in the Rarities Unlimited series. (Only one more to go!) Although I figured out a big plot twist well before it was revealed, but I still didn't know who the bad guy was until the final confrontation. I like it when that happens, in books and movies, if not in real life!

This had to be one of the worse books I have ever read (or in this case, listened to)in my adult life. How does drivel like this get published? The sex scenes were an embarrassment. The 2 Rinaldi YA books that I recently finished were so much better, in terms of literary style, character development and plot. It makes me wonder.
My public library needs some better audio book titles.
