The blaze that night at her family's pizzeria changed young Reena Hale's life in more ways than one. Neighbors and relatives would pull together to help the Hales get through the crisis and rebuild. Oh god.

One of my biggest pet peeves in literature?

STORIES THAT TAKE MORE THAN 50-PAGES TO GET SOMEWHERE.

Blue Smoke has kept my attention, sure. The fire is interesting, and Reena is pretty cute.

But.

I understand that the rest of this book is going to be about Reena's ADULTHOOD.

SO WHY THE HELL ARE WE STILL HANGING AROUND HER IN FIFTH GRADE ON THE 50TH PAGE?

And these are LONG, DETAILED pages, guys.

I'll get back to this when I have enough time to dawdle.

So disappointing in so many ways. The story is spread out over twenty years and takes way, way too long getting to the "present" (2005). Roberts spends lots of time in key time periods that, sure, are integral to the story, but there is just so very much piled in. I feel like what should have been vignettes were artificially inflated to make them not just chapters, but entire sections of the book. Which mean that the book doesn't really start until it's practically over.

The two main characters w...more

Roberts, Nora – Standalone
Putnam, 2005- Hardcover
When Reena Hale was 12 years old, events lead to her family's restaurant being burnt by an arsonist. With that, Reena was determined to become an arson investigator with the Baltimore police. Other fires have touched those know to Reena, but now it has become very personal and very dangerous.
*** I am a huge fan of Ms. Roberts work and applaud her moving more into stories where the emphasis is more...more

When Catarina "Reena" Hale was eleven years old, she watched with her family--father Gib, mother Bianca, sister Francesca, sister Isabella, and brother Xander--as their family business, Sirico's, burned to the ground. The case came to a swift conclusion, when the father of a boy who had attempted to assault Reena is picked up for arson. The family rebuilds their business, their family ties stay strong, and their love and respect in the neighborhood grows.

We fast-forward to Reena in college, whe...more

This was a reread for me, and I think I liked it even more the second time. Obviously the suspense was muted, but I was surprised at how many details I had forgotten about the fires and deaths. This time I was able to concentrate more on the emotions and interactions of the characters, and this was simply wonderful! I know some readers were disappointed with the slow development - Reena and Bo didn't even meet until nearly 200 pages into the story! - but to me the strength of this story is in th...more

Really good book! it was kinda slow in the beginning and it kept skipping ahead to different years and events but in the end it was a really good book! Soo glad my grandma got it for me and *Spoiler* I was glad that Bo and Reena had a happy ending!!!

I recently watched the movie to this book, it was a good movie and most of the events were correct but it wasn't really all that good compared to the book. First, the movie totally left out Bella and in the book she played an important character. Al...more

I really liked this book.

It centers around a big Italian family living in Baltimore; they own a pizza place and they live right down the street.

One day thier lives change forever; a neighborhood boy and his dad burn down the pizza place to get revenge on thier family.

Even though the father goes to jail and the son goes into a detention center, they do not stay locked away forever.

The family, especially Reena (the youngest daughter) continues to be haunted by the those 2 people for a long time.

This book is the reason I wish I could stop reading once I realize I can't stand any of the characters. But I can't. Somewhere deep down, I don't want to give up. I just keep hoping that somehow, someway, the book I am reading will get better. In this case, it never does. It's just gross, and graphic, and violent.

I've decided I'm not a big Nora Roberts fan. I think she's a sell-out.

Don't read this. You've been warned.

I really enjoyed this. I liked how Reena and Bo circled around each other for years. It did seem that it took Reena a bit too long to connect all the fires together. I mean, who has fire touch their life *that* much? And the ending seemed a little rushed. But all in all, it was romantic and suspenseful, as any good Nora Roberts should be.

This is terrible. No wonder she can pump out about two a month. Worst book ever. Don't think she knows how to use articles, conjunctions. Very frustrating. Don't read. Sounds like this. Only worse. Well, with sex. So a little better.

I enjoyed this to a certain point, especially young Reena but I found it much too long with lots of unnecessary filler before we get to the main story and I found the bad guy too clever (given he is setting fires and killing people for a 10 yr period and he eludes capture wreaking a ridiculous amount of havoc even after they know who he is but there is no mention of a particularly high IQ at any point) and the amount of damage he was able to inflict before they caught him ridiculously high. While I haven't read every one of Ms. Roberts works I must state that I have read quite a few. I absolutely adore her way with words and the way she moves a story along without being obvious. Since many other reviewers have given a synopsis of this book I will limit myself to comments on the whole.

Fully rounded characters were what first grabbed my attention. It is through the central character's interaction with those around her that we learn of the events that have brought her to the present...more

I've been reading a lot of Nora Roberts lately. I do prefer her contemporary romance/suspense to her urban fantasy but I feel the novelty is beginning to fade for me.

While I appreciate the immense detail Roberts gives us, showing an incredible amount of research in different areas, whether it be a location or a person's profession (in this case, arson investigation), I feel it takes away from the story itself, and the endings are too hurried. In Blue Smoke, she gave an enormous amount of descrip...more

A friend loaned me this book, which I will categorize as a better than average awesomely bad romance novel. Nora Roberts is an uneven writer, sometimes giving her characters dialog so contrived you want to tell everyone to just shut up already, but then there's Bo Goodnight, the book's knight in shining armor, who is, of course, not only attractive, but gets all the best lines, many of which are pretty witty. Bo ends up being the most fully realized character in the book, which is weird given th...more

I have to say, I'm surprised I would give a Nora Roberts book such a distinguished rating, but I was impressed with the storytelling and character development of Blue Smoke.
This is the very first book of Roberts that I have ever read because I was (mistakenly) under the Impression that they were barely a step up from a Harlequin romance, but this novel was wholly without cheese.
I admit, yes, romance is a major thread in the storyline, but there was more than enough plot here to balance it out....more

I listened to all 14 CDs of this book. Though it ran out of gas a little towards the end, it was Robert's usual good, compelling story. I think it is interesting how she explores different fields, like arson and fire fighting, through her characters.
I appreciate the less graphic sex scenes and her strong women characters. I could have definitly done with out the one intimate encounter in the back yard swing. (Who does this stuff? And doesn't leave the scene crippled.)

You have to wonder about th...more

Might have a spoiler..

Okay so Reena decides at age 11 that she wants to be an arson investigator after her family restaurant was burnt down. The fire haunts her when every man she becomes involved with surprisingly die by fire. And then there is Bowen Goodnight who becomes the love of her life, etc.

I was not a huge fan of this book. From the beginning it was obvious who the arsonist was and it takes her the whole book to finally figure it out? Also, you don't fall in love with any of the charact...more

This was one of the most suspenseful of Nora Roberts' novels with a thoroughly creepy and crazy stalker seeking revenge for perceived injustices of long ago. It had certain aspects in common with her book "High Noon," with an arson investigator instead of a hostage negotiator.

Basic story line starts with neighborhood tough roughing up 11-year-old Reena Hale (and probably would have raped her had her brother not come along to defend her). Her dad gets in shouting match with his dad, who torches h...more

2 ½ stars. A good story until the last third or so. The narrator Joyce Bean was bad with male voices.

A fun idea was Bo seeing Reena across the room and for him “the music stopped. She was his dream girl.” He tried to get to her but she left before he could. On two more future occasions he sees her but is unable to get to her before she leaves. I was curious wondering when and how will they ever meet?

WHAT I DID NOT LIKE:
Bad guy was too perfect and no hope for the good guys.
