D.A. Carson can preach.

I was introduced to this preaching when he spoke at my church’s Bible conference a few years back on the person of Jesus Christ. I was blown away by Dr. Carson’s intellect, his ability to point out things in scripture I’d never seen before, his passion for Christ, and the witty, entertaining way in which he was able to do all of this. He simply made the Bible come alive to me in way I’d never experienced before.

His new book, Scandalous: The Cross and Re More...

D.A. Carson’s Scandalous surprised me with how enjoyable it was to read and how encouraging it was to my soul. Carson is a name that is synonymous with scholarship in the world of modern Evangelicalism. A well-known professor at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School and the author of numerous books and biblical commentaries, Carson is someone that most evangelicals should read.

Positives

As a pastor, I have worked through a few of Carson’s books. More...

I love D.A. Carson. I love his penetrating analysis of Scripture and the polite emotion that bubbles through his intellectualism when he writes something that touches his passion for God. I was thoroughly pleased to read this collection of five speeches that he delivered at Mars Hill Church. I don't know if I have ever listened to the audio recordings of the original talks, but Dr. Carson does a great job in this book of adapting them for the written medium (lots of parenthetical citations, for More...

Overall Carson takes us from understanding who Christ is, the importance of His atoning work on the cross, His triumph over Satan, His triumph over death and even His triumph over doubt. Each chapter is firmly grounded in Scripture and Carson does a good job of letting the reader know how it affects their life today. Carson doesn’t shy away from saying things that the intelligentsia of modern (liberal/emergent) Christianity think as scandalous or idiotic. Carson quotes a former atheistic phil More...

D.A. Carson is one of my favorite theologians. This is a collection of his sermons on the crucifixion and resurrection of Christ.
Carson spends a significant amount of time detailing the doctrine of penal substitution.
An interesting and refreshing reminder of the heart of the Gospel and what Christ has done for us.

I really didn't enjoy listening to this at all. Although there are some interesting bits, overall I’ve found this very dull. From the title I was expecting it to be more dynamic and truly scandalous, but it certainly did not come across that way to me, sadly. Although I have never come across anything by D. A. Carson before, I have read and heard similar theology on this subject, so it wasn’t anything new. The narration is very clear and easy to understand, and is very dramatic in parts. So no p More...

Excellent book! Carson is a great writer who explains ideas in a thorough, engaging, and interesting way. This book attempts to 'unpack' five Bible sections related to Christ's death and resurrection: Matthew 27, the crucifixion; Romans 3:21-26, Christ's atoning sacrifice; Revelation 12, Satan's rage against the Lamb; John 11, Lazarus' resurrection; and John 20, Thomas' response to the risen Christ. I would recommend this book specifically for the detailed explanation of Revelation 12's apoc More...

Based on a series of lectures D.A. Carson delivered at Seattle's Mars Hill Church in 2008, this book investigates five aspects of Christ's crucifixion and resurrection that are particularly scandalous. After all, the message of the cross is an offense (Galatians 5:11). It is a stumbling block (1 Corinthians 1:23). It is folly to the weak and perishing... but it is also the power of God for those who are being saved (1 Corinthians 1:18). Too often we glaze over the real meaning of the cross. We d More...

Got this book for Christmas. In this latest addition to the Re:Lit series (which I love), Carson looks at the cross and resurrection of Christ in a startlingly fresh way. He examines ambiguous passages like Lazarus' resurrection and Thomas' doubting, and provides insightful exegesis and intensely practical application. Poetry. Exegesis. Prayer. Pastoral Advice. Couldn't ask for much more from Carson. He even lets down his academic front to show his more witty side!

My full review can be read at Blogging Theologically:

“Nothing is more central to the Bible than Jesus’ death and resurrection,” writes D.A. Carson in the preface to Scandalous: The Cross and Resurrection of Jesus. “The entire Bible pivots on one weekend in Jerusalem about two thousand years ago.”

Based on his lecture series A Day with Dr. Don from 2008, Scandalous is Carson’s “modest attempt . . . to provide an introductory explanation of the cross and resurrection,” as he More...

typical Carson--well formed arguments and perfect logical structure
great historical context for the scandalous contrasts of Jesus coming into the world and how that would strike initial audience
powerful applications of those contrasts for today's audience
loved the exposition of Rom 3 and the historical background of the raising of lazarus John 11.
finished each chapter with a poem.

D.A. Carson is a master Bible scholar, but able to put things so clearly and succinctly for laypeople. I love how he points out the literary use of irony in Matthew. His exegesis of Romans 3:21-26 is worth the price of the book, and his treatment of the story of Lazarus is phenomenal. This book is a treasure, a combination of exegesis and rich devotional thoughts. A must read!

This was assigned for my seminary class Cross/Resurrection in the New Testament (Greek), and it was an absolute pleasure to read. Carson focuses on the irony/plot twists to which the cross and resurrection of Christ inhere. He deftly interweaves prescient biblical commentary, modern cultural application and kind reproof into an exemplary work of theology.

Based on five sermons delivered at a Resurgence conference at Mars Hill, Seattle, Carson explores the absolutely stunning truths of the cross and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Each chapter is a treasure unto itself. Together they make up a great meditation for the Easter season. Highly recommended!

This book was so refreshing. It really takes you back to the significance of the cross of Jesus and how unfathomable the intricacy of it was. God is surely to be praised, for going back and studying the cross, you will always be able to go deeper and deeper into Christ's love.

Hard to say anything negative about this book. Theologically sound explanation and application of the cross and resurrection. Readable. Interesting. Encouraging. Challenging. Expository. This should be in any Pastor's, make that believer's library!.

This is a fantastic collection of sermons, all centered around Christ's atoning work on the cross. Included is a discussion of the ironies of the cross, the implications of the cross, the placement of the cross in redemptive history and the power of the cross. In this book D.A. Carson offers readers a wonderful mediation on the most important and central truth of the Christian faith.

D. A. Carson writes a book that not only writes a book that makes you look and see the Cross of Christ and Christ's atoinment in new light, but introduces you to new ideas and thoughts within the pages. The first chapter "Ironies of the Cross" shows this full well. The book is enjoyable to the beginner in their faith, or for someone looking to help lead a Bible Study.

This book was very helpful in unpacking some of the theme of the Cross and resurrection of Jesus Christ. The section on Revelation 12 was especially helpful.
