There was slighly less historical detail or sense of place in this installment; Pulo Prabang never really came alive for me as a unique, distinct country. The exception to this was, of course, Stephen's trek to the temple deep in the jungle, and the time he spent with the orang-utans up there: definitely one of the most memorable and evocative moments in the series so far.

Another excellent book in the series. I love every one, but this one is especially good--we get to spend time with Jack's family in the beginning, Steven's natural studies and intelligence work in the middle, and at the end there is some great action. Any Austen fan should consider reading these books to get a male perspective on the time. O'Brian's research is impeccable and his prose is utterly convincing.

Definitely O'Brien on the downhill slope of sequelitis. One gets the feeling that he started to write one book, changed his mind & took it somewhere else. Too much psychodrama, not enough ships, too much land, but some nice naturalizing with the Good Doctor. I think that you would have to be already hooked on O'Brien to bother.

Many narrative delights in this book, including the encounter with Inaccessible Island pictured on the dust jacket art, Stephen Maturin's pilgrimage up the Thousand Steps to the half-ruined Buddhist temple at Kumai, orangutans and durian trees, and the final disposition of the traitor and longtime nemesis Andrew Wray.

Not his best, but still solid. I had to read this one slowly, since I couldn't find the 14th one and I didn't want to finish and not have that one on hand. Luckily found 14th (in the same cover design of the other 19 I already had), so I finished it.

From inside cover blurb:
"The ending of the book leaves the reader more than usually impatient for its successor."
Uh oh.
It would have been nice if something had actually happened in the first 250 pages.

O'Brian is always a delight, but after the wild ride of the previous volume, this one felt like a bit of a breather..Mautarin's sojourn with the organutans is one of the most moving sequences of the series.

I read through the entire series and then I start at the beginning again. Amazing characters. Amazing depth. This is my comfort reading.

This was not my favorite of the Aubrey/Maturin series, but it'll do.
