Ok...I read this book the day it came out...as a matter of fact I went to the book signing at book people in Austin. All I know is I may not be right about the date i read it but I can say it was during hurricane katrina she came to book people in austin and when the book came out. I know bc I spent hours in line talking and forming a few relationships with refugees that last till this day. Ok, if you know me youre not surprised I'm reviewing this book you know my love of my favorite pianist ...more

I've gone from owning a couple of her CD's over the years to becoming more intrigued of her creative process. Thanks to a dear friend for sharing her box set I have become a routine listener. After reading Tori's book and engrossing myself in her music I think she may have just singlehandedly knocked out all of my top favorite live performers. This woman was born to create music and relay messages from a spiritual realm. Yes, her music is that deep, that moving and some may even say that disturb...more

A friend asked me to write a review of this, expecting that this autobiography would be a scathing tell-all like Mommy Dearest. It's far from that. While Tori does share initmate details of her life and career, she does not really name names or attacks anyone maliciously. She does provide a lot of insight into the creative process, the role of feminism on musicians, native american beliefs, the music industry, Mary Magdalene--it's a wide gamut in a relatively short book. She also goes into painf...more

Piece by Piece is one of the most amazing books I have ever read. It is one of those books that has the potential to forever alter one's outlook on the world. Tori has an ability to articulate the artist's connection with the Creative Source that is imperative for any artist, no matter what her medium, genre, or trade to study and take heed of in order to cultivate a healthy, enriching connection to her art and to the art of others. Like Francesca Lia Block, Tori has a way of writing about he...more

This might be the worst book I've ever read. The only reason I even gave it ANY stars is because Tori Amos co-wrote it, and I think maybe it wasn't her but her co-writer who can't put a sentence together worth reading. Anyone who knows me, even a little bit, knows how obsessed, and I mean OBSESSED, with Tori Amos I am. I have pictures of her. I have her autograph framed and hidden in the back of my closet. It's my special secret. I don't want just anyone knowing I have such high regard for...more

I waffle between loving this book and feeling sort of "meh" about it. It's really hard to take in large doses. Sometimes I felt like I stumbled into the babblations of one of those crazy people who try to bum cigarettes off you on the streets of Santa Cruz. Other times, I am fascinated by the thought process behind creating such amazing songs. She reminds me a lot of Alice Walker, with her talk of how the "girls" come to her and how she is a channel for them to come to life. ...more

Overall, I think this book was pretty good, but I can't shake the feeling that there was something missing from it. I appreciated her insights on creativity, the music business, (such as the state of music and women in music today), and her stories of her personal struggles with pregnancy/miscarriage. But I expected more and came from it feeling like something was missing. I would've liked to have heard more about the stories behind the songs.

Otherwise, this is a great book for Tori fans w...more

This book is a fantastic resource for artists of all kinds.

Learning about Amos' artistic process almost feels wrong, like you're peeping on someone getting undressed. But her theories on what an artist's role is in the creation process, her warnings about the inner workings of the music business, and her historical notes all combine to make this a book that belongs on my shelf next to all my other theatre/art reference books.

Sure, Tori goes off on tangents from time to time: What artist...more

Wow! This took me a little while to get into but once I did, I was really amazed and intrigued. I started it I think, 4 times before I actually read the whole thing, the first time being about three years ago. It was recommended to me when I was venturing forth to study theatre performance at a conservatory and now that I have finished with that part of my life, it really made me take a look at what is important and how to balance a performance career with personal life. It brought me back to my...more

i've been a fan of Tori Amos since i was in the sixth grade, watching the Crucify video on VH1--yes, kids, they used to play MUSIC on music television--anyway, if you are a big Tori fan, then yeah, obviously, read her book. she doesn't reveal a whole lot of her personal life or emotions, but she does talk about what it's like to manage life as a music icon--paying the bills, balancing family with career, and even how being a musician affects her diet. if you have followed her career closely, no,...more

This is a really interesting memoir by Tori and journalist, Ann Powers, they're kinda going for the feel of Joseph Campbell and Bill Moyers back and forth conversations in The Power Of Myth. Each chapter opens with a bio on a mythical goddess and covers Tori's life from being a little girl hanging out with her cherokee grandpa to her struggles with the music business and even a chapter on her difficulty and longing to become a mother. You can tell she truly is trying to connect with the reader a...more

I love Tori Amos' music and have for years. I have nmet her and found her very inspiring and lovely. She is a bit odd though.

This is a great biography and it is clear that she finds inspriration in many well researced places. However, she goes off on a lot of tangents and some of them are hard to follow.

It is nice to see a full picture with interviews with many people in her life. I also liked the biographies of some of her best known songs.

A good read for fans but a little much f...more

This book came rocketing onto the scene at the same time as Tori's first studio album in several years, and I was thrilled to be able to pick up both at the same time. Powers takes us into Tori's fascinating world, behind the scenes of her genius, as it were. Tori takes her craft very seriously, and these brief insights into that craft are fascinating. The tidbits of insight into specific songs on the album The Beekeeper were particularly captivating. I've been a Tori fan since I was a little gi...more

So far... the Tori Amos writing/storytelling is amazing revealing a lot of the creative process that seems so mysterious-but the Anne Powers comments/portions border on 'suck!' Why does she need to have a say in print at all? Her presence helped structure and edit the book i'm sure, but her passages add little to it's understanding. If you are a Tori Amos fan (ears with feet)-this is an absolute must read. So much revealing insight and many sparks of creativity. She leaves few stones unturn...more

Although I didn't finish the book.. I'd have to say that I did enjoy reading it and would gladly pick it up to finish it - once I have time (being a new mommy)..

Tori is one of my favorite musicians and reading this was interesting and insighful. This book dives into how she works creatively and how she is into the goddesses and she channels that energy into her music. There are some glimpses of her biography but I really expected more about her life than what I got from the book.

As much as I'm a huge fan of Tori's music, I have to say that she's frigging weird and despite owning all of her albums and attending every single concert (sometimes multiple times) the book is just plain weird, especially with the soap-box rants. Sometimes it veers ultra-feminist and theoretical. I prefer the portions that provide an insight into what it's like to tour and her creative process.

I guess if you're a Tori fan, you have to read it..just because.

Tori's take on the creative process was interesting (of course, I enjoy most books on the creative process, so this could be a bias statement). I also enjoyed the discussions on the music business. This is not a quick read, however. I did have some difficulty with all the discussions of mythology and felt like I needed a reference manual for some sections. It's something I'd be willing to revisit later on when I have more time.

a bit too much about the corn mother for my tastes, but of course i'm going to love this book. i think this woman is phenomenal, and the lucid bits about how she runs her show and her personal life are lovely little glimpses into that which makes up her being. her struggles with miscarriages are heart-breaking, but the triumph of the birth of her daughter makes us all happy that not all of her children had to be songs.
