This book is awesome! I have been wanting to begin a parent/child book club and now I feel much more ready to do so. But not only that, I have come across definite tools that I can use in my own reading. After reading this book, I have decided the "theme" of my book club will be something along the lines of Law & Order. Because this book describes how we are first detectives, finding out which "suspects" (characters) are the protagonist and antagonist, assessing the "...more

This is a great little book for guiding kids and their parents through book discussions. I admit that I'd read some of the titles discussed before, but the authors helped me understand the underlying meanings that I'd missed before as a child. And probably would miss again now as an adult. :P Reminds me of the value of talking about stories with others in order to unpack things and get a fuller appreciation of them.

I really enjoyed this book and definitely finished it feeling inspired to delve deeper with my kids into the books they're reading and the books we're reading together. Even better, I felt encouraged that we all could do it. Before I even finished the book, I found myself talking differently with the kids about the books we're working on right now, and I look forward to even better discussions in the future.

bookshelves: book-group, non-fiction, re-read
Read in June, 2005
This is a book about a parent/child book discussion group. The authors emphasize that children are quite capable of reading, understanding, and deconstructing good books. The book also uses several books as examples - and breaks down the parts of the book.

Informative, interesting and fun all mixed together.

A nice little how to book on conducting book club for children. The authors view is that children are capable of learning how to unlock the meaning of fiction through studying plots, narrative points of view, characters and conflict. Each chapter demostrates how they do this with a particular novel.

This book is an excellent tool for learning how to read a book and delving deeper into literature. This has helped me be able to study lit with my children and it would make a great spine for a co-op class.

This book really helped me think about how to present books to kids and inspire them to read. I would love to start a book group and use this as a guide.
