The nice thing about reading a medical thriller written by an MD is accuracy in detail! Dr. Palmer writes a very interesting book about an MD who returns to his small hometown to practice at a local hospital run by his brother. As always, Dr. Palmer grabs the reader in the first chapter by outlining the issue via a character's personal experience. In this case it is a young child named Toby who is undergoing a hernia operation. He is supposed to be under during the surgery but something is w...more
3rd medical thriller has: love, deceit, rivalry, corruption!
We're reading Michael Palmer's medical thrillers in order, having thoroughly enjoyed his earlier "Sisterhood" & "Side Effects". As before, most of the story revolves around a hospital, this one, Sterling New Hampshire's Ultramed, part of a big business conglomerate. The successful administrator is Frank Iverson, son of the town's patriarch, Judge Clayton Iverson. When younger brother Zack finally fini...more

This was one of the few Michael Palmer books I'd not read previously, and I found it good, but nothing spectacular. As with his other books, the characters are unique to this one, so Palmer does spend a lot of time on character development throughout the book. I find this both good and bad. On the plus side, it means you can pick up any book and not have to worry about a crucial plot twist that occurred in an earlier book and affects what you know about the character. On the downside, readers do...more
This is a fairly typical medical mystery but it had lots of twists. And like the kid on Sixth Sense said, a story needs twists. I'd give this an extra half star if I could.
An eight-year-old boy remembers every detail of a routine surgery he had several months ago. Zack Iverson, neurosurgeon, tries to find the reason why and how to stop it before it the terrible memories kill the child.
Recommended for: If you like Robin Cook you'll like Michael Palmer.

In the tradition of Robin Cook (whose books I liked in these years) I also acquired a few of Michael Palmer's books.
I did like them too, but because I got to the end of the Cook-series, the Palmer books didn't make as much impression as they might have done when read on their own.
I'm not sure if I'm actually going to re-read this book, if I'll feel like it.
If I do, I'll write a proper review, though.

I have enjoyed this author. He is a writer of mystery all based in the medical field. There is some language, and sometimes a quick love scene. Over all it is a fun fast mystery that keeps me guessing. This one was a little graphic in places. It is set on the premise that people are being operated on, and they can feel and hear everything, but they can't move. Gives you the creeps! I enjoyed it.
Now this was a bit of a surprise! I expected a mediocre book and instead found a very well-written medical thriller with superb characters and a great story-line. Thanks to Becks for giving me this to read, it more than made up for the last one and I will be reading the rest of his books!
Freaky. I've read stuff about people who are awake during surgery, and it is a frightening thought. This is a great thriller book that capitalizes on that idea.

Way too long. Too much about hospital politics and not enough medical stuff.
Pretty good thriller with greedy docs & administrators!
Palmer writes very suspensful medical mysteries.

new twist on surgical technique!
It was good piece of literature :)
Espectáculo!
Loved it!!!
great
Rather dated and medically implausible thriller, but reasonably good story.
Very interesting story! It reminded me of the show that featured people who woke up during their surgeries. These people was conscience while the surgen was operating on them. This novel is a scary thing that doctors can do to people to knock them out for before surgery. Very scary
This was one of the best medical mystery books I have read. I was completely connected to each character, so much so that I could feel their pain as I continued reading. I highly recommend this book to anyone! Although, I do not suggest reading this before any upcoming surgeries....
I read this book while recovering from brain surgery of all things. It was my first book by Michael Palmer. My Dad gave it to me to read and my mother was horrified. It really kept me enthralled so I wouldn't focus on the pain. Thanks Dad!
Michael Palmer on his inspiration for Flashback: "What if corporations started taking over hospitals and running them with a corporate mentality as for-profit businesses?" Prescient!
EXCELLENT, Michael Plamer is by far one of my favorite authors!!
Another great medical thriller.
