After a lot of deep reading, I needed something light and frivolous. In this one, I got the light but it was anything but frivolous.

Focusing on two sisters who hate each other, I found this rather entertaining and was sad to put it down after a two-day reading. Initially, I hated Celeste and rooted for Ronnie. Their mother needed to be put out of her misery. As each of their lives and back story unfolded, I began to feel sorry for these three ladies. Sadly, their relationship reminds me of harde...more

You can go many places and read a complex review of this book, so
I won't give you another one. I'll keep it simple and say it's about a mother
and her two daughters and many years of not understanding each other.
Secrets from the mother's past that once revealed to the daughters make
them see her in an entirely different light.
A really good book that I thoroughly enjoyed and recommend to everyone
who likes a happy ending.
This was my first book by this talented duo but certainly not my last.

As the German saying goes, Der Apffel fellt nicht weit vom Baum (the apple doesn't fall far from the tree), and DeBerry and Grant's novel of four generations of women take this idea and try to create a heartwarming but cautionary tale about the dangers of keeping secrets. Years of secret keeping starts to unravel after the death of the patriarch, Will. His death brings to light an old house Della, the wife and mother to Celeste and Ronnie and grandmother to Nikki, had long since put from her mem...more

Great read! I really enjoyed how effortlessly the language flowed from prose to poetry. Makes me with my mom were still alive. I was barely coming into my adult years when she passed from cancer. There are so many questions I would have asked her and frequently wondered if I would have if she were still alive, if we would ever fully have the open relationship that she had with my older sister. I was the younger one with the flip mouth after all. Now I'm seeing the world through a whole new lens....more

Great story of family relationships. The mother-daughter/women dynamic between generations was great…Della with Ronnie and Celeste; Celeste with Nikki; Celeste with Ronnie; Della with Nikki and Ronnie with Nikki. It explores the relationships and the roles of a Grandmother, Mother, Daughter, Sister, Aunt and Niece.
Nicole
This was a FANTASTIC story about the ever evolving relationships between mothers and daughters! It also provided multiple opportunities to see "inside" each of these women's minds and how they processed the same life events from different perspectives. Totally worth the time to read.
Barbara
Excellent story. Loved every character no matter how "bad" they were except maybe Henry and Ethiopia. Routed for all the women to bring themselves around to their better selves, especially Celeste.

Aspects of this book continue to come up on a daily basis. Exceptionally thoughtful and fair on provoking issues.

I started to listen to the audio cassette of this, but it did not capture my interest.

This was a great read. It shows how keeping secrets is never a good thing.
Meadow
I feel like this story fell apart at the end. All of the sudden everyone is happy and getting a long and hooray! Enjoyable to that point.

Also, didn't love the audiobook narrator.
Chris
Good book about family secrets and forgiveness. Plus, I love books that take place in the south, and have that Southern flavor
Judy
One of my favorites by the V&D duo. Sometimes the skeletons in the closet need to be aired out before anyone can move on.
