I had just been thinking that I haven’t read a Highlander book in a bit. It’s one of my favorite reads and Sybil keeps me swimming in them if she can. But this time I was playing on my ereader and came across this book by Mary Wine, so I started reading.
And I’m actually glad I did. This is my first book by Ms. Wine and I’m pleasantly surprised.

Oh dear. I'm resigned to the fact that every highland romance I read won't come close to the wonders of Cross Stitch, but it's still rather deflating to read books like this.

This was such a delicious story with bantering back and forth between Shannon and Torin. The sexual appeal to each other sent sparks flying out in all directions and you just couldn't wait til the two of them got going.

Two and a half but I'll round it up because the hero's pretty good.
I'll be brief. The heroine in this book nearly made it a DNF for me. She was introduced as someone who'd had a hard life; abused by her father, made to be subservient as a female and especially to the Laird (dear old dad). So the spark she shows when she meets up with Torin McLeren is nice to see.

It was all a highlander tale should be. With a hot and dominate male character and a bold and fierce woman at his side.. I had my up and downs with this tale. At one point I thought it dragged on but than it would speed up to my kind of pace that I fell in love with Torin from the very beginning. He was just everything every woman would want for a man. This is set at the backdrop of a troublesome time in Scotland. The king is murdered and the heir in hiding. Shannon Boyd's father is rooting for the bad guy and wants to marry her off to him, but first he slaughtered some people on his neighbours land. Nothing really new to add in the highlander story lines which disappointed me because I really liked/ loved many of Mary Wine's other books and her highlander heroes are some of my favorites. Although not a bad read and I might be a little harsher because I have read some good highlander/medieval stories lately, such as the Black Lyon. The story started off slow or just not right. This book takes place in the time just after the death of James I, king of Scotland, and during the clan revolutions that followed. Weellllll, this was definitely not high literature but after weeks of reading books that have required mental focus, this was an easy and entertaining read and a welcome break. I don't normally read the romance genre, so I'm probably far more critical than the typical romance fan, and I couldn't help comparing this to Outlander, which did not do this book any favors, unfortunately.

Torin McLeren kidnaps Shannon McBoyd with the intention of preventing a marriage. Lots of potential but not as good as other books that I've read by Mary Wine. I still thought it was a decent read. Just felt like it was missing something.

This book had a potential for great story but did not deliver, everything was put in place for it but for a highlander book the entire book had not one fight scene or battle, I felt disapointed, the entire time the characters were closeted in some building between the kitchen and bedroom and then when they left nothing really happened. I really enjoyed Torin and Shannon's love story. Romantic and passionate tale. Lairds, feuds, the Highlands, and good love scenes. It kept me interested all the way through it.
Overall, I enjoyed the plot, pace and political intrigue that marked this story, and found Terin and Shannon's budding relationship (while heavily based on the physical) enjoyable. For those who care, this is a steamy book, on par with Stephanie Laurens, although a different time period.
The only complaint I have was when the author tried too hard to explain Highland Scottish social mores and customs. Maybe some of her audience needs the explanation, but having the heroine constantly explaining t...more

When I started this book I was in the mood for a fun, lighthearted book filled with adventure and HOT highland hunks. And when I started reading that is exactly what I thought I was getting... the only problem was that about 40% in this book stared to drag a bit too much for me.

Maybe I'm just getting picky in my old age, but I thought this was just short of wallbanger boring. The story was unoriginal and predictable, the dialog was insipid and the hero and heroine really deserved each other what with their constant back-and-forth yammering. At the start I was clawing at my kindle hoping that Torin (best name ever) and Shannon would finally get to spend some quality time together.
