First I have to mention that I received this through Goodreads First reads (than you so much!). I don´t usually read this genre (OK, never) – I was expecting something more along the lines of a thriller. But it is indeed a romance disguised as a mystery.

I feel bad; I received this book from FirstReads over a month ago, and only got to it now because I've been so busy! This was my first foray into older romance novels (it was published in the 80s) and it took me a bit by surprise. I had to remind myself that, even 20 years ago, views of women and men in a relationship were slightly different. I have mixed feelings about this book. If I could, I would give it a 3.4/3.5 rating, but since I can't, I decided to go with a 4 to round it up.
I felt like the beginning of the book was odd. I won't go into detail, because I don't want to ruin the story for others, but needless to say, the story with the brother made things a bit-- different. I'm not sure how to review this book without sounding condescending. It's not my intention to either insult the authors of books like this, or people who enjoy reading them.
That being clarified, this books reads like a daydream fantasy. Something you make up when you're staring out of the window on a long train trip, or during your lunch break when you're having a boring day at work. Before Sandra Brown was Sandra Brown she was Rachel Ryan (among others.) It's important to know this because this romance is 30 years old and needs to be read in context. It was published in 1982, before AIDS. Candle Ecstasy was the new kid on the block competing with Harlequin. It was racier than Harlequin, a little more daring. And a lot of NYT Bestsellers got there start there. This book wouldn't get published today. But in 1982 romance was all about bringing down strong alpha men. In a Harle...more

This older (1982) book by Sandra Brown was included with another First Reads giveaway that I won. It is written under one of her earlier names, Rachel Ryan.
This book is a romance similar to Harlequin Romances. Others have given summaries of the storyline so I won't bother. It was uncomfortable seeing Erin accept Lance's violent streak. You can tell it was written in a different era with more stereotypical gender roles of the eighties.

The subplot with the brother was disturbing and not neccessary to have it go the way it did.
Lance was also disturbing to me. Too violent and irrational. Erin was an ass.
If you think about it, this story has a lot of ick factor.
But 30 years ago, maybe that's what you got in a romance story.

Sandra Brown has done it again. The unexpected is most welcome. Among the long-lost family & murder & attraction is a story that compels.
Won this in a first read; my second book to win. Waiting for the book to come now.
Just came today, first of December. Along with another book (a free read together with a free read?) called Sand auf unserer Haut also by Sandra Brown. Too bad I hate reading fiction in German. xD Ah well, i'll give that one a try as well, I suppose.

This book was very schmaltzy, bland, and boring. You could guess chapters ahead what was going to happen and how things were going to end.

I have read this early last and I am reading it again..it's just a sweet love story...I do enjoy it from time to time..
this book is pretty far fetched and I could not stretch my credulity enough to enjoy it
Lance was rather annoying and so was Erin. It was predictable, but I guess most romance novels are predictable. This lacks a real sense of wonder.

I don't think this book was for me. I tried to get into it, but I just couldn't.I won it in the 'First reads' which I am grateful for. Its not a christmas present to my grandma. Thanks

This book was ok. Not my favorite of hers.

This is just a run-of-the-mill romance, with all of the proper elements... instant attraction followed by a personality conflict, reluctant surrender, a situation that makes it impossible for romance to continue, a dramatic event where true feelings are revealed... all that's missing is the ripping bodice. A fun read if you’re into that sort of thing.
I received this book through Goodreads First Reads signed by the Author! I read this book many years ago, and look forward to reading it again.

Menurutku ini buku romance biasa aja, walau agak mengharukan pas di bagian akhir wkt ce nya usaha utk menyembunyikan kehamilannya. Hampir mirip dgn cerita SB yg lain, Bittersweet Rain, dimana ce nya pernah nikah namun masih virgin dan akhirnya hamil dgn tokoh co utamanya.

Classic Sandra Brown- a little romance, a little tension, a little mystery. I'm glad I found this author; I have enjoyed everything I have read by her.
I thought this book had a unique storyline. It was good and fast paced with likeable characters. Thanks to Sandra Brown for the recommendation and the signed copy!
Its a typical love story with stupid lead characters. It was a love story based on PHYSICAL INTIMACIES alone. Physical, superficial love.
I really got into this book. Loved the story line. And i felt like i knew the characters.
