Despite being a Scotsman, Lord Kinross has written a very balanced and readable Ottoman history. He respects the empire and reports and analyzes the history without bombast or a Eurocentric bent. This would be a good book for anyone interested in European or Middle Eastern history.

Great writing style and an extremely underrepresented people in our Western version of history. The change between medieval and colonial Europe simply makes no sense except in the context of the Ottoman Empire. Makes a good sequel to John Julius Norwich's Byzantium books. Lord Kinross does such a great job of describing the events that I kept imagining dramatic movie scenes as I was reading, probably because there's room for many epic movies in these stories.

Great overview of the Ottoman empire. Much of this detail I hadn't learned. I love history, and this covered it. One problem, I think the author sided too much with the Ottomans and wasn't as unbiased as he could have been.
