KENALI MUSUHMU DAN DIRIMU SENDIRI, DAN KAU TAK TERKALAHKAN DALAM RATUSAN PERTEMPURAN

Era 1860-an.

Shiba Ryotaro (1923 – 1996) was primarily a writer of historical fiction for which he painstakingly carried out vast amounts of research, not unlike William T. Vollmann. Historical fiction does not have a very high standing in the West, though some of our finest writers have turned their hand to it. But Shiba was an enormous success in Japan with his series of sometimes extremely lengthy novels treating significant persons and events in recent Japanese history. Donald Keene, who knew Shiba well ...more

An impressively told story about one of Japan's greatest politicians.: Tokugawa Yoshinobu, or Hitotsubashi Keiki as he was known for most of his life, usually languishes in most histories of Japan as an afterthought: "The Tokugawa Shogunate was overthrown in 1868, and then..." Fortunately, Shiba Ryotaro saw fit to write a book about this fascinating last Tokugawa shogun.

The introduction to the book laments the loss of the historical narrative in the Western world, and it's easy to see why. Shib

When this book was originally released, it was published as "historical fiction," since it followed a much more narrative style than most history books usually do. There's narrative, quotes, and reactions which the writer, having not been in the room, could not have known about it. Still, he believed that it would be the best way to take this person, this last of the Tokugawas, and humanize him. Because one of the things that's always been a problem with Japan is that the higher one is in the po ...more

If ever a historical figure was the right man at the wrong time, Yoshinobu Tokugawa - the last Shogun - must be him. In Ryotaro Shiba’s novelistic history, “Keiki”, as he is most commonly referred to in this book, was an intelligent, articulate, charismatic leader who would have been a great Shogun; at any time other than that at which he assumed the office.

Keiki was born into an offshoot of the Tokugawa family that made his chances at birth of later becoming Shogun extremely small. However, su

Membaca The Last Shogun setelah membaca Taiko dan Mushashi menjadikan buku ini menjadi kurang greget.

Japan's last Shogun's biography, the life of Tokugawa Yoshinobu is fascinating to read about. There are many biographies about great people who did great things, but books about great people born on the wrong side of history are much more rare. Had Yoshinobu been born into some other position, he could have been one of the most influential people of his generation. He certainly had the ability. But his birth placed him into an institution that was already obsolote and being crushed under the tid ...more

Cerita sejarah mengenai Shogun terakhir di Jepang.
awalnya saya sedikit bingung apa beda Shogun dan Kaisar. Shogun disini terlihat begitu berkuasa sekali.

An excellent historical novel by Shiba Ryotaro on a man who reluctantly became the last Tokugawa Shogun, because he could see the end of the Tokugawa grip on power. His actions and their timing had a major impact on the modernisation of Japan. Julie Winters Carpenter's translation is so smooth that I forgot I was reading a translation. I was moved at times by the difficult choices Yoshinobu had to make. It is excellent in looking into the mind of Yoshinobu and the difficulties he had in making h ...more

terlalu pasrah ah
ga seruuu..

Well written biography with some imagined but plausible dialogue that gives it a little novelistic feel; if the events in cause (1868 Meiji restoration) greatly interest you, this is a must book, otherwise it's going to be too detailed when analyzing the political maneuvers; the preface summarizes the events, while the author offers a defense of his approach too, while the book is quite captivating when the main events get under way

Again, I read the original Japanese version of this book. Yoshinobu Tokugawa was my favorite figure in Japanese history. The book assured me why I liked him - his determination, intelligence and graciousness - although it was a little disappointing to find out the fact that he abandoned his people in the end for self protection. Overall, a good book to learn small part of Japanese history.

finally finished. interesting story of keiki (yoshinobu-last shogun). indeed a play boy of his time. a lot of struggling and back n forth about how keiki became shogun. too much and too long for his process to become the 15th shogun. but would recommend to readers who wants to know how 19th century elites lived. enjoyable read. i finished the book in one night (6 hrs).
