Well most of this book consists of literary essays where the authors, out of sheer brilliance of insight, reach a series of conclusions which all prove the exact same thing: that proposition A and it's polar opposite, proposition B, are paradoxically both true, at the same time, in x text. The really, really brilliant writers go one step further and demonstrate that the fact proposition A is true paradoxically makes its polar opposite, proposition B, also true. The books in the Cambridge Companion series are always excellently done. They provide a wide expanse of critical readings for the topic at hand. This necessarily means that they are better for the introductory scholar because of their variety.

For my purposes, I found the historical accounts (providing context to Kafka's work and life), the entries on adaptations of his work, and especially the analysis of the editions of his works particularly useful. I found the other ones not so much. I believ

Fourteen chapters by different authors on various aspects of Kafka's life and work. Some very esoteric; others more broadly interesting.
