A famous, reclusive, dying writer turns out to be an obese and disgusting old bigot (and "the fattest strawberry of a strawman," according to Jimmy's brilliant review), and none but Nina can cross swords with him. Huzzah.

حين بدأت قراءة روايتها نظافة قاتل استحضرت كتبها التي أعجبتني سابقا زئبق ثم سيرتها الجائعة وكنت آمل أن لا تكون هذه الرواية أقل مستوى خاصة وأن الرواية قد فازت بجائزة لكن للأسف خاب ظني نوعا ما ..

الرواية تحكي قصة أديب نوبلي على حافة الموت مصاب بسرطان الغضروف الذي بالمناسبة أول مرة اسمع عنه لا أدري هل هناك سرطان فعلا بهذا الاسم أم إن إيميلي ابتدعته من خيالها كما ابتدعت هذه الرواية ..

كانت إيميلي هنا تسخر من أدباء نوبل فقد ظهر الأديب النوبلي كرسم كاريكاتوري أم إنها تسخر من الصحافيين الذين يدسون أنوفهم في كل شاردة وواردة ..
تقول دوريس ليسنج في إحدى حواراتها إن حياتها لم تعد كما كانت بعد نوبل قضيت سنة كاملة لا أفعل فيها شيئا سوى الرد على الصحافيين إنهم قد يحولون حياتك لجحيم ..
جهزت إيميلي أربعة صحافيين للقاء الكاتب لتبدأ بعد ذلك المبارزة الكلامية .. استعراض مهارتها اللغوية ..الصحفي يريد أن يخرج بسبق صحافي والكاتب يريد أن ينتصر من أجل متعته الخالصة والشعور بلذة الإنتصار .. أعتمدت الرواية على الحوار طوال صفحات الرواية وكانت أشبه بمباراة أيهما يلحق بالآخر .. جاءت الحوارات بنسق واحد وأفكار متشابهة للأسف .. كما إن شخصية الأديب لم تكن مقنعة والحوارات أقرب للإفتعال ..

جاءت نينا الصحفي رقم 4 بسلاح مختلف أعطاها الثقة وكسبها الجولة وهو سر من الماضي .. وبدأت مبارزة أخرى بين الأديب والصحافية وتوالى كشف للأسرار .. الأديب الذي توالت انتصاراته حتى مجىء الصحافية يخر راكعا ويهمس لها بالحب كآخر سلاح بعد إعلان كراهيته الشديدة لعنصر النساء وللصحافية وبعد الكثير من الشتائم والبذاءات وفي الوقت التي تظن فيه الصحافية إنها انتصرت ..تشير النهاية إلى أن النوبلي هو من فاز أخيرا وحولها إلى مسخ بعد موته .. لعل في ذلك إشارة ما

أظن أن الرواية مثيرة للجدل وستجد هناك قراء على ضفة معجبون بها وآخرين على ضفة أخرى ..استمتعت بمهارتها اللغوية ..التشويق الذي برعت فيه إيميلي فهي تطرق موضوعا غريبا أقرب للسخرية أو ربما الفكاهة ..تتلاعب بالألفاظ تجعلك متحفزا وكان الأمر أشبه بلعبة لم تعجبني الإطالة في الحوارات على إنها حملت بعض الأفكار الجيدة إلا إنها استطالت وكررت نفسها وبالتالي أصبحت مملة لم ترق لي أسرار الأديب بدت لي كقصة مفتعلة مقحمة على النص إن شئتم .. .. خلاصة الحديث لم أشعر بالألفة مع هذا الكتاب لإيميلي وهذا أمر خالف توقعاتي ..

هي محاولة لقراءة القراء و كيفية القراءة لم تكن ناجحة برأيي, تتحدث الرواية عن كاتب هرم و بدين يعيش في عزلة و يستقبل صحفيين مجبرين أن يتقبلوا سخريته و مزاجه العفن فقط ليحققوا سبقا صحفيا حتى يلتقي بصحفية تستطيع أن ترغمه على الكشف عن سره الدفين..النهاية سريالية جدا لم أحببها و أمنح الرواية ككل نجمتين للحشو غير منطقي للعبارات و المصطلحات و كأن الكاتبة تريد أن تخبرنا والله أني مثقفة و اعرف الكثير و هذا لا أحبه في الكتاب.

لن أقصّ المحاور الأساسية للرواية . ولكن من لا يحب كثرة الكلام الذي لا فائدة منه ، ومن لا يحب الشخصيات المريضة والشاذّة ئنفسيا عليه عدم الاقتراب منها. ويا ليتني لم ابذّر وقتي عليها.
أتت الكاتبة بشخصية كاتب قاتل ومتمتع بجريمتهم ورافض لكل السنن والقوانين الطبيعية والاجتماعية والدينية.

يتفق سكرتيره مع خمسة منهم ..
لايأخذ الأربعة الأول مأخذ الجد

ولكن الصحفية الخامسة نينا تأتي وفي نيتها هزيمته في لعبته ..
وطوال الفصل الخامس " نصف صفحات الرواية تقريبا "
ينغمسان في حوار طويل حول روايات الكاتب وماضيه المستتر .
هذا الكاتب ..
من تلك الشخصيات التي لا ترتاح حتى تصل بالآخرين إلى الحضيض..

...more Претекстат Тах – живой гений мировой литературы, лауреат нобелевской премии, в крайней степени мизантроп умирает от крайне редкой разновидности рака. Со всех концов света приехали журналисты с целью записать на диктофон последнее интервью маэстро.

Биографы уже точили перья. Издатели готовились к схватке. Нашлись, конечно, и такие интеллектуалы, которые задавались вопросом, не дутая ли величина эта мировая знаменитость и действительно ли столь весом вклад Претекстата Таха в мировую культуру. Не был ли он всего лишь пройдошистым наследником истинных, но недооцененных творцов? Приводились имена авторов, известных единицам, произведений которых сами господа литературоведы не читали, что позволяло им проявить проницательность.

Первая половина книги уделена многочисленным интервью, в которых Тах от души развлекается, смешивая интервьюеров с грязью. Каким бы хитрым ни был разговор, Претекстата не удаётся ни шокировать, ни подловить, ни заинтересовать. Один за другим журналистов просто выносят из его квартиры, в которой воздух отравлен дыханием и словесами инвалида-жирдяя. В книге очень привлекает тема человеконенавистничества.

– Так вот, возвращаясь к тому, о чём мы говорили, я готов утверждать, что не знаю другой книги, которая так дышала бы злобой.
– Именно. Вы требовали доказательств моей доброты – вот вам самое очевидное. Это понимал Селин, писавший в предисловиях, что на создание книг, отравленных ядом бескорыстной доброты, его подвигла непреодолимая приязнь к своим гонителям. Вот она, истинная любовь.
– Это перебор, вы не находите?
– Перебор? У Селина? От души вам советую, сотрите это.

Вторая половина книги раскрывает «поединок» таинственной журналистки Нины и Претекстата. Проницательная журналистка, именующая себя простой «грязной ищейкой», догадалась об страшной тайне, связанной с неоконченным романом Таха. Дальше рассказывать не буду, чтобы совсем уж не раскрывать все карты, иначе читать уже неинтересно.

Я могу позволить себе писать самую рискованную правду – все равно в ней увидят лишь метафоры. Ничего удивительного: псевдочитатель в герметичном скафандре проходит сквозь мои самые кровавые пассажи, даже не забрызгавшись. И восторженно ахает время от времени: «Ах, какой чудный символ»

Трудно выделить что-то одно, что хотелось бы отметить в этом романе. История, герои, язык, а так же многочисленные отрывки текста, которые легко растаскиваются на цитаты – всё это в комплексе доставляет огромное наслаждение. Не могу не говорить об этом романе цитатами из него же, уж слишком они хороши.

Как, я вас спрашиваю, может писатель быть скромным? Это же самое нескромное ремесло на свете: стиль, идеи, интрига, всевозможные изыски служат писателям только лишь для того, чтобы говорить о самих себе – и вдобавок словами. Художники и музыканты тоже говорят о себе – но языком куда более утонченным, чем наш. Нет, милостивый государь, писатели – величайшие бесстыдники; иначе они были бы бухгалтерами, машинистами, телефонными операторами, в общем, респектабельными людьми.

Амели Нотомб создает привлекательного в своём безобразии монстра. Расист, женоненавистник, урод, мизантроп. Тах просто-таки дышит злобой. Но в то же время верен себе и убедителен. Его извращенные понятия о добре и любви, его отвратительный культ тела и вечности то отвращает, то совращает. Журналистка Нина представляет собой общепринятые нормы, служит прекрасным оппонентом. В результате вторая часть пролетает очень динамичным диалогом.

Итого: Увлекательный детектив с изощрёнными представлениями любви.(less)

إنها المرة الأولى التي أقرأ فيها رواية لا يحدث فيها شيء سوى الثرثرة المتواصلة دون انقطاع , وللغرابة .. أنني أستمتع بهذه الثرثرة / الدردشة .. أندهش, أفاجأ .. أصاب بالقرف .. أتفجع .. ثم أعود لأندهش مرة أخرى . لا أستطيع تخيل شخصية معقدة غريبة ولديها هذا الكم من الأفكار الوحشية / والرقيقة في آن عن الموت والحياة والنساء والأطفال والعالم . رواية مختلفة .. جداً . آميلي نوثومب .. بالتأكيد سأقرؤكِ مرةً أخرى

أنهيتها بسرعة خلال يومين فقط ... كانت لذيذة شيء ما يشدك ويجذبك للإسترستال في قراءة حواراتها ... لم أقرأ من قبل رواية حوارية بهذا الشكل حيث منذ بدايتها وحتى نهايتها حوارات ولا شيء آخر ...
استمتعت بها ربما لكون هذا النوع جديدا علي وربما لأن الحوارات كانت تتسم بالذكاء والإستفزاز وبعض التشبيهات الغريبة والكوميدية نوعا ما
لا أدري ما يمكن أن أصفها به لكن قراءتها تجربة فريدة ...

هو وصف الكاتبة لما حدث بعد عملية قتل الطفلة ،
فأن لا يشك أهل الطفلة بذاك الشاب على أنه القاتل على الرغم من أثار الخنق
ويصدقون فكرة أنها ماتت غريقة !!

Ci sono parti molto divertenti, alcuni dialoghi interessantissimi, ma nel complesso la scrittura è discontinua.
Nemmeno io signor Tach amo i libri a messaggio, preferisco quelli di desiderio, qualsiasi desiderio sia. Ma lei mi taccerebbe di malafedesignor Tach!

E' quello che mi piace meno, tra i libri della Nothomb, anche se...

I must say knowing what I did going in to that, helped me to handle better its little autobiographical admission. Of course now part of me holds that as suspect, as all of Nothombs brilliant crimes and deviant fiction.

There are several threads through her work, aside from the seemingly deep well of autobiograpical-or-not realms. One is that her books are all rather short, like a young woman's purse, not cluttered...more Our book club recently read "Loving Sabotage" which I've read and reviewed earlier. I must say knowing what I did going in to that, helped me to handle better its little autobiographical admission. Of course now part of me holds that as suspect, as all of Nothombs brilliant crimes and deviant fiction.

There are several threads through her work, aside from the seemingly deep well of autobiograpical-or-not realms. One is that her books are all rather short, like a young woman's purse, not cluttered up yet suprisingly full of more than mere fashionable accouterments. Bits and pieces of real life. And love, but as with the other books, the love here remains unorthodox, if not unhealthy as well. Pretextat (what a name!) and his cousin Leopoldine form the center of the story within the story, and the title of this book.

And again it is a youthful love, hinging on aberrant and complicit with as much violence as with desire. Indeed, stop reading here if you intend to read this book please. Somehow, youth/young love is seen as hygenicaly pure, but only in so much as it cannot age, and sprout hairs and leak blood. By the way, the revulsion of the body changing I suspect is why Pretextat must be so corpulent and loathsome on the outside. Such a heavy character assassination early on had me of course rooting for Mr. 'Text.

But the real relationship in this book is between Pretextat and Nina, the journalist who engages in something more than an interview and less than interrogation. Dialog packed with Platonic punches and sophistry to boot. As in all intriguing relationships, the battle of wills pierces nearly every paragraph. I found it spell-binding, especially after the sacrificial strawmen journalisto's sent before Nino into Pretextat's lair.

Well I don't want to spoil all, but this may be the most twisted of Nothomb's work, which as it was evidently her first, makes it all the more remarkable. And my indirect take on it, is that this is a story she wrote to/for herself to steel herself for the inevitable parade of critics to walk up to her door, and to traipse about in her tremendous prose. She may have flipped the roles, but I think we know who the talented and determined young lass is, and who the overweight, overwrought verbose verbeasts is.

لا أشعر برغبة في الكتابة, بل في القتل ..!!

This remarkable novel is written almost entirely in dialogue, though 'relentless volleys of acerbic banter' may well be a superior description. At the centre of this unorthodox theatre, is the dying (and decaying) novelist Pretextat Tach - an absurd, reclusive prick. Preparing for his imminent death from the rare Elzenveiverplatz disease, he grants five journalists a rare audience. Preparing for his imminent death from the rare Elzenveiverplatz disease, he grants five journalists a rare audience. He is all too aware that his conversation, scrupulously measured and deliberately cutting, sets a sartorial standard few can match. Each of the journalists stride in, confident at brutal repartee... and yet they are systematically disposed off all too efficiently.

Enters Nina, the only one who has read all 22 of his novels, or perhaps more significantly, the only female. All his novels are imaginatively christened - "The Prose of Epilation", "Crucification made Easy" and my favourite, "The Apology of Dyspepsia". She begins as a cheerful combatant, then ruthlessly shaves off layers of cold lard, revealing her agenda to reveal the inspiration behind his sole unfinished work, the intriguingly named "Hygiene and the Assassin". In the presence of such incisive wit, Pretetext is aroused in a state of rapture, and we are forced to pity his urgent, mundane human desire to find both meaning in life, and symmetry in death.

There is a macabre twist, and despite Nina's frank repulsion at their unexpected frisson of understanding, the novel ends too neatly with her oddly sincere surrender to his masterful manipulation.

Finally, an appreciative nod to Alison Anderson's stylish translation. I can only imagine the masterpiece this novel is in its native tongue; there must have been such faithful preservation of crisp pithiness, without which a novel like this can never work! Despite the cold and often clinical dialogue, one can feel an evasive sympathy sidling around the controversy of Pretextat Tach, which is the true genius of this work. Not to mention a whole new string of expletives to add to my armamentarium (Inveterate Prankster! Cynical Vivisectionist! Bloat Boil!).

A disgustingly solid block of 5 stars. (less)

Igiene dell'assassino potrebbe essere, nelle premesse, un romanzo da stroncare senza appello, poiché l'autocompiacimento autorale è così forte, persino sfrontato nella ricerca del motto fulminante, della citazione colta, da cannibalizzare la trama. Eppure c'è qualcosa di deliziosamente grottesco e viscerale nella posa che esibiscono i protagonisti da suscitare simpatia e stimolare (almeno nella sottoscritta) un'ilarità sfrenata.

Đây là cuốn tiểu thuyết đầu tiên của Amélie Nothomb được xuất bản nhưng tôi không biết có phải là cuốn đầu tay của cô không mà chán không thể ngờ. Dẫu vậy, tôi vẫn đọc hết từ đầu đến cuối. A wonderful send up of the "enfant terrible" tradition in French literature. In content it reminded me (and might have been an influence) of a Danilo Kis story (translated in English as Literature and Balls or something); while, in tone, Croatian writer, Verdana Rudran's underappreciated novel "Night." Not sure how I came accross this one. Someone wrote on the back, "Nothomb finds everything fascinating, and she takes us along an electric current of perception." Keyword: Perception. Sums this up some. A dying writer claims fame based on nobody having read him. Journalists flock to his cancerous body near his death, only to be turned away by his grotesque and disgusting self. Nina is prepared. She did all her homework and can navigate through all his dirt. She is a super effective stander.

الفصل الأخير من الرواية حبسني إلى أن أنهيت الرواية .. هو أطول فصل و أكثر الفصول إثارة .. بين هذا العجوز المريض المهووس و بين صحفية شابة استطاعت أن تسبر أغواره أكثر من أي صحفي "ذكر" سبقها - العجب أنه يكره النساء و ينظر لهن نظرة ازدراء - بل أجبرته فى النهاية إلى ان يزحف لها لأنها هزمته فى هذا الحوار النفسي المنهك!

العجوز له افكار جاهلية عجيبة .. قتل محبوبته خنقا أو إن صح التعبير " وأدها " ..!! صاحبنا كان يعيش في وهم عجيب ، و كان قد أخذ العهد على محبوبته أن يظلا طفلين - نعم طفلين - و إن لاحت علامات البلوغ على أحدهما فعلى الآخر أن يقتله .. و هذا ما كان ، قتل محبوبته فى سن الشباب لأنها أخلت العهد - بالرغم أنه لا يد لها فى ذلك - !

و بعد بلوغه من العمر عتيا - 83 عاما - و هو على فراش الموت ، تأتي صحفية شابة كانت قد درست هذا الكاتب جيدا لتكشف خيوط هذه الجريمة التي ارتُكبت زورا باسم الحب !! بل و لتجعل هذا القاتل " النظيف " " الصوفي " يشعر بنفس الويلات التى شعرت بها محبوبته عندما خنقها بيديه !!

نهاية الرواية صادمة جدا و درماتيكية بشكل غير مسبوق .. فالصحفية مع كشفها لجنون هذا المريض تجد نفسها تلقائيا تسير على نفس دربه .. تخنقه - بعد إلحاحه و قيامه أيضا بدور الطبيب النفسي كالمعتاد - و يموت و هي تشعر بالراحة و النشوة بل تجزم بأنها لو لم تفعل لأصابها مس من الجنون !!

الرواية جولة سريعة بالزمان مع ثبوت المكان و بتغير مستمر للأفكار يجعلك تنتقل بين السطور مذهولا مدهوشا : ماذا سيحمل لي السطر القادم من مفاجأة ؟!

الرواية بالطبع متخيلة أو إن كانت حقيقية فهي منقولة من عالم المجانين و المرضى النفسيين الذين يبررون أفعالهم الإجرامية بأنها أمور روحانية و صوفية لا يفهمها البشر العاديون ! ... لكن نحن نعيش فى عصر مجنون ، و يعيش بيننا أمثال هؤلاء المرضى النفسيين - سواء تغيرت مهنتهم أو أسلوب إزهاقهم لأرواح الآخرين - بأسلوب يدعي أنه " نظيف " و " مريح للضحية " بل يدعي أن ضحيته كانت تبتسم و هو يسلخها ! ستري هذا المجنون فى حكام اليوم الذين يزهقون أرواح شعوبهم و فى النهاية و فى الخاتمة و هم على شفا الموت أو على شفا " الخلع " منهم من يقول : قد فهمتكم ! أو آخر يقول : لم أكن طالب سلطة بل تفانيت فى خدمتكم .... لا فرق بين كاتب فى رواية تخيلية و بين حكام و غيرهم فى رواية يعيشها الناس !

There’s not much in this world more delicious than good dialogue. Banter, a back and forth that takes on a life its own, never feeling forced, driving a story to places you’d never expect to be taken. It’s not often a novel comprised of almost exclusively dialogue-driven passages has such a life to it, a three-dimensional quality that excessive detail would only hamper. But that’s exactly the situation with Nothomb’s Hygiene and the Assassin. This is the first of Nothomb’s works, published in 19...more There’s not much in this world more delicious than good dialogue. Banter, a back and forth that takes on a life its own, never feeling forced, driving a story to places you’d never expect to be taken. It’s not often a novel comprised of almost exclusively dialogue-driven passages has such a life to it, a three-dimensional quality that excessive detail would only hamper. But that’s exactly the situation with Nothomb’s Hygiene and the Assassin. This is the first of Nothomb’s works, published in 1992 when she was 25 years old. In October of this year, Europa Editions released the English version of the text to North America, and it’s a hell of a translation.

Conversational dialogue in small amounts lives or dies by the quality of its translation. In the case of Hygiene and the Assassin, the book itself is predicated on a tight rhythmic structure that required a pitch-perfect translation—which is exactly what it got. There’s not a word that doesn’t fit exquisitely with the flavour of the piece, which, to be honest, is sometimes difficult to stomach yet impossible to turn away from.

The story is simple: an obese, misogynistic, hate-filled Nobel Prize winning recluse of an author is dying of cancer at a very late stage in life, having completed his life’s work (leaving one novel unfinished, as any self-respecting author should, he claims). The author, Prétextat Tach, decides to allow a small group of journalists to interview him—the first interviews he has ever had. None are prepared for the level of perversity inherent in this one individual.

An example—Prétextat Tach on the persona of the Writer:

“The hand is for pleasure. This is devastatingly important. If a writer is not having pleasure, then he must stop immediately. To write without pleasure is immoral. Writing already contains all the seeds of immorality. The writer’s only excuse is his pleasure. A writer who does not have pleasure is as disgusting as some bastard raping a little girl without even getting his rocks off, just for the sake of raping, to commit a gratuitously evil act.”

One by one, the first few journalists are eviscerated by the reclusive author, and by the halfway point of the book’s sparse 167 pages, only one remains. Her name is Nina, and she knows more about the author than he would ever suspect. From this point on the book is a single, unbroken 90-page chapter as Nina and Prétextat tear each other apart in a beautifully choreographed verbal sparring.

To say anything more would be a disservice. It is a disturbing book, a sometimes difficult to stomach read, but also one of the most compelling and expertly written stories I think I’ve ever read. I admit—I am a sucker for a conversation, and to have one build its momentum for nearly 90 pages, continuously increasing the level of animosity that exists between the two while simultaneously fostering a perverted respect that can only build between two people who want nothing more than to see the other left weak and without recourse, it was something special. This is the very definition of a one-sitting read. Highly recommended.(less)

Great. Another entry into the fat=evil campaign.

Lessons for all aspiring writers: have a character that is evil or morally questionable? Make them fat, that will clearly demonstrate to your readers that they are infect evil and deserve to die by the books end. رواية ذكيّة وتعكس قدرات الكاتبة الذهنية \ اللغوية \ الثقافية ببراعة منقطعة النظير!
يرتكز العمل على الحوار فلا شيء غيره بين الدفتين لكن الحوار يتخذ أبعادًا مختلفة كل حين فتارة يكون ساخرًا وتارة يكون أدبيًا صرفًا ثم ينتقل إلى البعد النّفسي في تجريد شخصية الأديب القاتل ومنه لأبعاد أخرى لا تقل إبهارًا للقارئ!
رغم أن الرواية لا تعد أكثر من ثرثرة إلا أنّ هذه الثرثرة تكتسب جمالًا "نوثمبـ"يًا مع الكاتبة الـ سوبر ستار كما تسمّى!!

Amélie Nothomb est un auteur que j’apprécie tout particulièrement et dont j’ai lu plusieurs ouvrages qui m’ont à chaque fois enchantée. C’était donc confiante que j’ai attaqué l’écoute de ce livre.
Première impression au bout de quelques minutes : la voix de la lectrice est très agréable et son jeu de comédienne est parfait puisqu’elle prend une voix différente pour chacun des personnages.

3.5 stars. I liked this book less than her others, but I enjoy Nothomb's prose style enough that even a more outlandish work, like this one, is entertaining. The most patently fictional of her books that I've encountered, this is the story of an aged, Nobel prize-winning author who is interviewed by a series of journalists, torturing them with fiendish spite, until he meets his match in a typical Nothomb heroine; a cool, witty woman.

He is the author of twenty-two novels, is extremely reclusive, and has never granted an interview over his long career. Now that he is dying (from Elzenveirverplatz Syndrome -- a long name for a rare cartilage cancer), Tach's assistant has granted a select few journalists the rarest of opportunities for an interview. One by one they come in, tape recorders ready to capture every word, and one by one Tach makes proverbial mincemeat out of them and tosses them out. But the meat of this book begins with the entrance of Nina, an intriguing young woman who isn't about to join her predecessors. After only a short while, and after Tach makes a remark about enjoying watching people crawl at his feet, Nina offers an intriguing wager:

"You said something about crawling. I suggest identical stakes for both of us. If I crack, I'm the one who'll crawl at your feet, but if you crack, you'll crawl at my feet. I like to see people crawling at my feet too."

Tach takes the bet, noting that he loves "squashing people," and that "humiliating pretentious airhead females" is something that brings him "extreme pleasure." And thus begins the verbal fencing match between the two, which lasts for the book's remaining 74 pages. There is absolutely no redeeming quality in the character of Tach; he is one of the most odious characters ever imagined. He's self-obsessed, feels he has risen above the rest of the world, cares nothing for the rest of humanity (especially for women). But what makes this book work and work well is the often brutal repartee between Tach and Nina, as she manipulates the conversation which eventually leads back into his past -- but to say more would be to ruin it.

This book is not for everyone; it is odd and very quirky with a main character that is, quite frankly, a disgusting pig. If that doesn't bother you, it is one of those novels that will entice you with its beginning and keep you reading until the last page. And although the core of this story consists only of dialogue, it is extremely well done -- it is not clumsy or out of step, and stays solidly grounded within the inherent qualities of both characters. IMHO, this is the mark of a good translation, which as a reader, I definitely appreciate.

تقسّمت أمامي إلى : مضحكة ثم ممتعة ثم مزعجة ثم تثير الإشمئزاز وانتهت بلا تُطاق

Me ha tomado mi tiempo poder reflexionarlo, me confunde bastante lo que quiere decirme Nothomb, pero veo una crítica a la crítica literaria llena de personajes que usualmente se ven inmiscuidos dentro de tal acción.
