Wow, this is gorgeous!

Maybe because I've been spending so much time in baby storytime the last few years, but I find myself really drawn lately to books for the younger listeners. This one has a classic repetitive pattern to the text, yet has a satisfying ending, too. I think it's pretty hard to set up such a strong rhythm like that and still find a way out of the pattern in order to bring the text to an organic close. And of course it's a perfect book to share and talk about. "Where is Catkin?"...more

Catkin jumps off Amy's lap, heading out for his daily hunt. He hears the creatures hidden in the yard cricket, frog, mouse, snake but can't find them. (Can you?) After a surprising twist when the hunter becomes the hunted, the story ends with Catkin safely back in Amy's lap. (Goodreads Summary)

Where Is Catkin? by Janet Lord, illustrated by Julie Paschkis, is stunningly appealing cat story that is fun to read and view. Catkin (a very stylized cat) is a frustrated hunter whose antics are sure to e...more

Catkin heads out to hunt in the garden. He sees and hears different animals in the garden but he can’t catch them. There is a cricket, a frog, a mouse, a snake, and a bird. After Catkin pounces them they disappear from view. But sharp-eyed readers will be able to spy them hiding. Finally, Catkin climbs a tree to catch a bird, but goes too high. Now it is Amy’s job to find Catkin in the garden and rescue him!

The first thing you will notice about this book is its amazing illustrations. Done in an...more

Julie Paschkis makes cats look fun to draw. There. Done. Shortest review I ever wrote. Where's my hot toddy?

Aw, heck. Look at me. Old softie that I am I can't just stop with that. Because truth be told, where Julie Paschkis is involved words of great length and descriptive qualities must be utilized. In this particular case, we're dealing with a book of siblings. Janet Lord, sister to Ms. Paschkis, lays down a simple text of a cat searching for little edible animals and insects, and Ms. Paschkis...more

Catkin jumps off the lap of his owner, Amy, and begins a hunting adventure. Follow him through rocks, trees, and ponds as he hunts for mice, snakes, birds, crickets and frogs while they hide from him. Children will enjoy searching for the animals pictured in the colorful eye-catching illustrations. Amy herself searches for Catkin and finally rescues him from a tall tree. This is an appealing and beautifully illustrated story!

Well now you'd probably have to have a heart of stone not to fall for this little number. Sisters Janet Lord and Julie Paschkis follow the meandering adventures of housecat Catkin. Eternally hungry, Catkin attempts to eat everything from frog to bird in this sumptuous readaloud. Kids will enjoy finding all the hidden details lurking in the edges of the pages. Adults will appreciate the visual feast it provides. Just lovely. - B

Picked this one up a couple months ago and J really likes it. Catkin is a cat who goes sneaking around a garden surprising the other animals and insects living there.

The book sort of has an "I Spy" element, though very simple. As Catkin meets a new animal or insect, they are worked into the design of the decorative border on the following page, which makes it fun.
Treasure
Bold illustrations following the adventures of Catkin, a cat with less-than-stellar hunting skills. As each animal escapes, the reader is asked to find where the animal is hiding-- Where's Waldo for the early set. Catkin himself goes into hiding and his owner must retrace his steps to find him. Simple, but fun, little kids will enjoy finding the animals in the pictures.
Donalyn
Catkin, the curious kitten, stalks animals in the garden. Onomatopoetic animal sounds and the refrain,"Where is...?" as Catkin meets each creature will invite young readers to chime in, while whimsical endpapers and borders on each page visually repeat Catkin's adventures.

Catkin goes off in search of other animals and comes across many different ones. This book encourages kids to spot the animals within the pages. I love the illustrations in this book.

This is a “Where’s Waldo?” type book where children search for animals hidden in the pages. Great book for children with some developmental delays—lots of participation.

This is a wonderful book, with simple narrative, lots of fun onomatopoeia, and gorgeous illustrations with lots of details and fun things to find. We really enjoyed this book!

I am totally confused as to how this made it onto any Mock Caldecott lists. It's lovely, yes, with plenty of bold colors, but it's not particularly remarkable.
Heather
The text is unexceptional, but the pictures are very attractive. Little ones will enjoy searching for each successive animal hiding in the designs.

Catkin is on the hunt to find different animals, and needs YOU to help him spot them! Cute book, great for preschoolers.
Janet
A beautifully illustrated tale of Catkin, the cat of course. Catkin leaps over the stonewall to go on a hunt during which he encounters various woodland creatures. Wonderful illustrations fill the entire page with an almost medieval look and feel. Only the "text boxes" are white. Each page has a border and as each new creature is encountered, it becomes part of the cumulative border. Even the end papers are illustrated with lovely Catkin. A satisfying story for the preschooler and a visual delig...more

Nice illustrations; has a kind of PA Dutch feel.

For young children. Sort of hide and seek.
Jane
This is visually sumptuous!

Catkin ventures away from Amy and out of the yard to hunt. Young children will enjoy this simple tale describing all the different animals that Catkin encounters. What makes this story particularly interesting are the illustrations, which cleverly hide more than just the animal that catches Catkin's attention in each spread. In addition, every animal that Catkin finds is added to the borders along the tops and bottoms of the pages. Children can have fun trying to find all the critters. I know I...more

Bright, stylized illustrations are the highlight of this cute book. The simple, repetitive text is a nice complement to the detailed and fun illustrations.
