I've read this book twice, once in 2002 and again 10 years later. I discovered that while back in 2002, I knew something about the Spanish Civil War, the Second Republic, and the rise of Francisco Franco, I didn't know enough to appreciate the beauty and the overwhelming tragedy of "Requiem". Now, having expanded my knowledge, and taught courses dealing with the Civil War and having studied in further detail the conflicts of the 1930s, "Requiem" simply sings to me. The portrait that the book pai...more

At first I thought it was a little stilted, the language being as plain as it is, and the story as bare as it is. But I've come to realize that (and this most definitely is probably not how Sender meant it to be) this novella is a gift. Of course it is a wonderful work on its own about the Spanish Civil War, it sums up just about everything that happened quite efficiently. Its gift to me however, and possibly to others who enjoy writing, is its lack of background information on pretty much any o...more

After being told I had to read this for school, I wasn't looking forward to it. It seemed quite nervewracking for my first ever book to read in Spanish. However, it was a great read, set in the time preceeding the Spanish Civil War, which I find a wonderfully interesting time historically. The character of Paco represents the Spanish peasant of that time so well, and Mosén Millán is a brilliant characteristic of the Spanish Catholic Church. In all, a good read for a Spanish A-level student, or a...more

I first read this book when I was studying A Level Spanish, and I loved it then as much as I love it now. Short, succinct and emotive, this is the story of Mosen Millan, a priest who is ravaged by the guilt of betraying his former acolyte, Paco, to the Nationalists during the Spanish Civil War. As the priest waits, alone, to conduct a memorial service for Paco, he remembers his part in the boy's life.

Full of imagery and symbolism, this is a book that has stayed with me for a long time.

Of the three books I read while I was in Spain, this is probably my least favorite, but it was still really interesting, especially in the nonlinear arc of the story as well as the way that it balances a personal, domestic story with the horror of the Spanish Civil War.

Short but poignant story about the years surrounding the Spanish Civil War. Set in the countryside, it tells the life of Paco through the eyes of the town priest. He baptised Paco, celebrated his wedding, and now he is preparing to do the last rite, the requiem for his soul. In order to avoid thinking about Paco's death -which is revealed at the end of the book- the priest goes trough all his memories of him. Through his recollections we learn about the life in those days, were the poor ha...more

Sender makes a strong commentary on the involvement (or lack thereof) of the Catholic church throughout the tumultuous Spanish Civil War. I would suggest learning the history before reading the book. The distortion of context and time makes the narrative initally hard to follow, but it is a quick read and the last half is captivating. A perfect example of the post-war literary era in Spain, even though Sender was exiled and forced to publish in Mexico.

This was an interesting reflection on the Guerra Civil de España. It was such a sad story though! It was alright to read for class, but I don't think I'd read it on my own time.
Bruce Snyder
I read this in Spanish about 40 years ago. Sender titled it Mosen Millan then, which was the name of the village priest.

A quick read that is well worth your time even if it is not in your first language. It is a good way to get to know this writer.

Read it in one day, really atmospheric, beautifully written. A good short story.

I read this book in Spanish for an undergraduate Spanish Lit class, and always wanted to come back and read it in English. The book takes place near a city where I lived for 6 months, so it really hit home for me. Very short but very rich. I'm glad I was finally able to find an English translation.

Novela corta, buena e interesante.
Becki
It is a short book written about the Spanish Civil War and also had a very sad ending. I liked the format but it also had a sad ending and kind of gruesome I thought.

The story is really nice. It's WWWAAAAAYYY too descriptive but that's how it's supposed to be.Still, great story.
