Proprio come te.

Before starting to read this book, I read some (very few) comments on it. Most of them talked about a love story and about humor... Maybe it's me, but I didn't find anything funny in this book. And I would hardly call it a "love story". I would rather say it's a book about death and violence. A sad book about death and violence. It only gets 3 stars from me because I found the beginning tiresome and naive, full of clichés and superficial. I found the end quite exquisite, though boring

Like much of Amos Oz's work, Black Box is not about the story. Indeed, the book is built around the premise that unresolved childhood trauma brings disaster to all the people around when the child grows up, but in truth the book is all about people: dysfunctional people who hit, scream, beg, and blackmail, get divorced or separated, and still try to reunite with each other. As sides, the epistolary style of the book engages the reader in mind games (will I turn the pages and see who wrote this?

A heartcrushing family drama unfolds through letters. This book makes me want to buy a set of waterman stationery, and start a correspondence with friends, enemies and ex-lovers.

Possibly the most sensationalized and publicized divorce in recent history brought to light the horribleness of friends and family and the general public choosing sides. Who was right? Who was wrong? Who failed in the marriage?
Divorce is an interesting thing. Two people once so committed to each other deciding that it no longer is worth it. Worth the work. Worth the communication. Far too often, the games begin- he said, she said - power and control ..... It bec More...

Well, I didn't really know how many stars to give to this book, I didn't like it, but I am thinking maybe this was the author's intention. It might be strange, but it is an idea...because actually it tells you smth: We will never know the guy next to us, doesn't matter how long we will be there, we will never know our deepest nature and we will surprise ourselves, things we thought to be eternal will crumble down and vice versa.... One of the reasons I didn't like it was because there is no obje

The theme of this book, as far as I can decipher it, seems to be “the art of living” meaning the difficulty and perhaps the impossibility of mastering it. I cannot say that the writing technique has fascinated me or the story for that matter. After concluding it I proceeded to read upon the author. It was with no surprise that I learned that he has studied philosophy, as most of his characters are defined it seems by their own ideas, ideals and impressions of themselves rather than their actions

This book had been sitting on a shelf for several years, bought at a library sale, finally read it during a snowstorm. And it was so good.... had to re-read parts to get the plot right. Still don't understand everything that happened, but I keep thinking it over. I guess that means it's literature and not just a novel?

At first I thought this was a weaker novel than Oz's "My Michael". The form of the story told mainly through written letters the characters sent to one another felt clunky and inappropriate for the type of story Amos Oz it seemed was trying to tell.
To an extent these initial failings still persist in the rating for the book. But, oddly enough, "Black Box" succeeds in areas where "My Michael" did not. The characters here feel more human, in that they not only fa More...

Goed boek.

"With all due respect to Tolstoy I'm telling you the opposite is true: Unhappy people are mainly plunged in conventional suffering, living out in sterile routine one of five or six threadbare cliches of misery.
Whereas happiness is a rare, fine vessel, a sort of Chinese vase, and the few people who have reached it have shaped and formed it line by line over the course of years, each in his own image and likeness, each in his own character, so that no two happinesses are alike." More...

Absolutely loved it, it wa unbelievable! I am definetely a new fan of this author, he has a unique way of expressing the culture and the beliefs of different people when they are both alone and in a grop. I think it's a really good book, and the characters are really complicated. At least for me.

I had to read this for my book group, but I certainly didn't enjoy it. The main problem was that I didn't like any of the characters, and a couple of them I couldn'tstand. Not conducive to good reading!!

Kept my interest until the very end, but I'm not sure I actually understood the ending. *shrug*
Still I liked the characters - they were both maddening and engaging. It also gave me a renewed appreciation for letter writing and a fond (artificial) longing for the telegram. (Not that I've ever sent or received one.)

I read this a long time ago, but I remember being really engaged with the story as it unfolds in letters from various people. The characters are extremely different, one from another, which makes them memorable and their interactions interesting. Characters' qualities and relationships work on another level, of course: the divisions within a family and the refusal of individuals to compromise are parallels for Israeli life ... or vice versa.

The story of a divorce and a failing family told entirely through written correspondences between the two characters. Well, not entirely. It's an interesting concept and I was disappointed how Oz lost it and at numerous points had his characters writing overly-descriptive, novel-esque letters to each other. I got a few good laughs out of the lawyer, but overall this was a big letdown from a good author.

A dramatic love story, written in an excellent manner, in which the characters torture themselves in the name of love. At a certain point, you can't be sure if love and hate are different notions. Although they are divorced, Alex and Ilana can't go on with their new lives..the past keeps them captives and the strength of their feelings bursts in every letter they send one another..

I barely remember this book, which might be a bad sign. It was... about a college professor at a thinly-veiled Northwestern? And Israel? And a divorce?
I know I read it the summer after my first year of college, which would make it the same summer I first read Love in the Time of Cholera and Master and Margarita, so perhaps it was just overshadowed?

I thought that this kind of novels are not written any more. But Amos Oz revives the genre with a splendid book. I really liked it mostly due to the style of the writing.
My copy of this book is translated into romanian.

Beautiful book by Amos Oz - documents the demise of a marriage through letters, the "black box." I was struck by how Oz interweaved vivid characters and stark prose. Really enjoyable and emotionally powerful.

Letters betwen a woman, ex-husband, their son, current husband, and lawyer. I wasn't crazy about the voices, but they are meant to play and lie, so they accomplished irritating me...A well-told story.
