David Beck lost the love of his life 8 years ago in a kidnapping and murder. He can not move on from that horrifying night. Two murdered men are found near the lake where his wife was abducted. Then Beck gets an e-mail to watch a webcam. He sees his wife. What is going on?
The FBI are trying to pin her murder on David. The facts of her case just don't add up. There are so many twists and turns. Just when you feel you have it figured out another turn in the story occurs. The bodies start More...

Tell No One: Novel into Film
I found a copy of this in the informal circulating library--leave a book, take a book--in the basement of our building, and temporarily put aside Baudolino to read it over the holidays because the French thriller adapted from it was one of the two best movies I saw last year and I'm always curious about the process of adaptation to the screen. What was retained from the original novel? What was changed? How does the impact o More...

I have never read a bad Harlan Coban book! He is an amazing author, I can never put his books down. I am SO excited they are planning to do a television show with his Myron character. I can't wait!

I had never read anything by Harlan Coben and had heard he was a good mystery/suspense writer. I disagree. This book was horrible. I almost gave it NO stars, BUT, to my own discredit, I WAS sucked in to the plot and kind of wanted to keep reading it. However, all along, I noticed the bad writing, the improbable plot twists which never seemed to end, and the completely contrived situations to help set up those plot twists. For example, having Dr. Beck take care of and befriend a black thug d

After eight years after the death of his wife, David Beck receives a note from someone...someone who knows him to well.
His wife is alive. And he's been warned to tell no one.
Of all the authors of page-turning suspense novels; no one makes me turn pages faster than Harlan Corban. He consistently gives his readers a rollicking ride and `Tell No One' is no exception - it's full of hairpin turns and twists of plot.
Unfortunately, in this case, a few too many twists.

Fantastic. Read this in about three hours, wasn't bored for even a second. Anyone who knows me well knows two things about me: I hate mysteries and I really hate being scared. Thankfully, this book was not scary or overly graphic. Creepy in some parts, yes...but I'll still sleep tonight. And the mystery aspect was handled in a way that I never got frustrated and flipped to the back of the book to see what the heck was going on. The story moved along at a brisk jog--and holy plot twists, Batman!-

Wow. Harlan Coben leaves his series for this book and breaks new ground which I sure hope he plans on continuing. Dr. David Beck's childhood sweetheart and wife is murdered 8 years ago and while his life has gone on, the hole her death created has only widened. And then the past connects to the present and the story is full of tightly connected twists and turns with a plot so complicated that I'll be thinking about this story for weeks. It's one of the very best things I've read in a long, long

Before I read this book I'd heard that the ending was a bit odd and I've read advice to stop reading a few pages before the end which seemed like very very odd advice for a mystery. It's also impossible advice to follow. As I neared the end of this book I found myself thinking "Well that's not as bad an ending as I'd expected" and I just had one unresolved question that I wanted to read on and answer. But it's the answer to that unresolved question that's the weird thing at the end

This is an absolutely first for me--I read this book in one sitting. Literally. I started it after dinner and DID NOT put the book down. 4 1/2 hours and 339 pages later, I finished the book. Talk about a page turner! All that being said, why only 3 stars? The truth is, I'm not entirely sure how I feel about this book. It's a thriller--loads of suspense and plot twists--bucket loads of plot twists. Normally I love that, but this had so much, by the end it was almost getting to be too much

Looking for a novel that’s a real page-turner? After a rather lackadaisical beginning, this one really takes off, although the ending, shades of Christie’s Murder of Roger Ackroyd — I hope that doesn’t give too much away — was somewhat puzzling given the characters’ actions prior to the revelation of the guilty party. David Beck, a pediatrician, has just gotten his life back together, following the murder of Elizabeth, his wife, eight years before, when he receives a cryptic, encode

This was a 'roller-coaster-ride' of a book. Just when I thought that I knew what was going on...it suprised me...right up to the end!
Things I liked:
1- well developed characters. None of the main characters seemed shallow, or frivolous to the plot.
2- one surprise after another.
3- Coben only gives enough information to keep you wanting to read. I hate when authors give out too much at once.
4- I was happy with the conclusion of the story. Nothing left undone. More...

I tried this because it was on the Ultimate Reading List for Suspense, and that's the only reason I gave it over fifty pages, because the writing here, oh, it is painful in a way that I can't believe this is just a weak book for this author, but the work of a hack. No sappy cliche is left unwritten. There are popular thriller writers who can boast strong prose--Dean Koontz and Dennis Lehane spring to mind. Coben is evidently not one of them. The way he bounces between first and third person and

This is a propulsive novel. Mr Coben grabs you and simply drags you, willingly, through a complex, exciting, plausible mystery story. In addition, he gives us characters, not cutouts.
Dr. David Beck's wife, Elizabet, was murdered eight years ago. A serial killer was caught and convicted of the crime. "Beck," as his friends call him, hasn't gotten over it. They'd been childhood sweethearts, and never really separated until her death.

Wow! I loved this book! A page turner for sure.
David Beck and his wife Elizabeth have known each other since they were eight years old. They've been together ever since. As they head to Lake Charmaine, they sit in the car both desperately wanting to come clean with secrets. Neither can make the first step towards lifting the weight of their own secret before tragedy strikes.
Elizabeth is grabbed, tortured, and later found of the side of the road dead. David survives that night More...

This was my second Harlan Coben book. I read The Woods about two years ago and liked it. Coben is a master of unforeseen plots. I decided to read another and a friend recommended Tell No One, stating this was the best Coben book.

Harlan Coben is the author of an excellent mystery series featuring a likable sports agent, Myron Bolitar. But in recent years, he’s written a number of stand-alone novels, and Tell No One is one of them.
The protagonist, Dave Beck, is a pediatrician who works in a clinic for low-income people. Eight years ago, his wife was murdered; Beck was at the scene but was knocked out before he could help Elizabeth. Beck has never forgotten and never gotten over Elizabeth; they had been childh More...

In many ways this is a good old-fashioned story book. It has flashes of excitement and plot devices to advance the narrative, but this is a story about people.
Specifically this is the story of David and Elizabeth Beck, and the tragedy that befell them 8 years previous to the timeline of the book. The story starts in a secluded cabin next to Lake Charmaine, deep in the forest where no one can invade their privacy. Following a dip in the lake, David and Elizabeth are attacked by More...

Excellent book. I read this in under 6 hours and I enjoyed every minute of it. After 10 pages I looked to my husband and said "A book should not take 50 or a 100 pages to get interesting, it should catch your attention within the first 5 pages." I then held up my hands and said "Thank you book angels for sending me an interesting book....FINALLY!

One star as I managed to finish this.
Coben's books seem popular, so I thought I'd give it a try, in the never ending search for nice thrillers and detectives....
Dr David Beck tries to figure out what happened 8 years ago, when his wife and love from his childhood was killed. Or was she..?
I read it to the end, but at some point there came a strong feeling of BS. Now let me try to get a few hiccups why:

This book was suggested to me by someone while playing a recommendation game. As soon as I checked it out I immediately thought it would be an interesting story so I added it to my ever growing TBR (to be read) list, or as I saw someone call it once, Mount TBR. I had never heard of Harlan Coben prior to this so I looked around for reviews of his books and they all had good things to say about them.

Once again, I was trying to broaden my horizons and decided to try this 'suspense/thriller' book someone recommended.
Okay, I'll admit, it was a page turner. My curiosity got me. That's not enough for me to consider a book 'good', though.
I really was turned off by the gory torture scenes. After the first one, I could tell when one was coming and simply skipped over that chapter/those pages. It made for a very quick read. Really dumb.

I only pick up mystery novels a few times a year but when I do it will likely be a Harlen Coben title you'll find in my hands. I feel that he has a way of making his characters come alive so much better than other mystery writers. He gives them personality. He also adds a bit more substance to his books than the average mystery by briefly mixing in a few political issues (in this case the medicaid system and social class). Coben can provide a suspenseful story line with plenty of twists, while g

Tell No One by Harlan Coben is a thriller which is based on the lives of Dr. David Beck and Elizabeth Parker Beck. In a flashbahback, the reader learns that David and Elizabeth's love for one another started in Miss Sobel's second grade class. Thirteen years later they marry.
The story opens when they go back to the tree at Lake Charmaine where they shared their first kiss. They are celebrating seven months of married life. They kiss again, swim, and make love. That's when the real More...

Eight years ago David Beck and his wife Elizabeth took their annual trip to the remote place where they had shared their first kiss. That night Beck was beaten and his wife kidnapped. She was found dead several days later, apparently the victim of a serial killer. Beck has since put some semblance of a life back together but it quickly unravels when he starts to receive messages that appear to be from his supposedly dead wife at the same time as two bodies are found in the spot where Elizabeth w

Roman efficace.

This is another crime-fiction book I read back in the earlier part of 2010. Harlan Coben had been one of those authors who I knew by name and genre having seen a prolific number of his books in the crime section of most bookstores. However, it took until I'd heard and read several good reviews of the French film version of his novel Tell No One for me to take the plunge and read one of his books. Funny how my reading practices appear to be increasingly shaped by my parallell passion for film.
