Notorious Eliza
by
Barbara Monajem (Goodreads Author)
Eliza Dauntry was infamous. Most people assumed she was a wanton because she supported herself and her son by painting portraits of courtesans. Yet Eliza hadn't been tempted by a man since her husband's death...until she met Patrick Felham. An old friend of her husband and a one-time rake, Patrick awakened a yearning in Eliza that demanded to be satisfied at once....

Eliza Dauntry is a notorious widow shunned by 'polite' society because she uses her artistic talents to paint nude portraits of the ton's mistresses an courtesans - all to support herself and her young son after her husband died. Now she has been summoned to cover over naughty scenes at Lord Landsdowne's estate, where she encounters her husband's old friend Patrick Felham - who just so happens to be looking for a wife and mother to his daughter.

I'm not a huge fan of Regency romance but the premise to this novella by Barbara Monajem caught my eye. Once a respectable widow, Eliza Dauntry paints nude portraits of rake's mistresses in order to support her son. Commissioned to paint over some rather lewd murals at a lord's estate, she meets her husband's best friend. Patrick Felham is Lord Loundsdowne's steward and heir. A widower, he's looking for a wife to mother his daughter. This romp through Regency England was a refreshing breath of...more
Even though Eliza Dauntry dresses in unattractive clothes while she’s working, she still finds it difficult to convince her clients that she’s no light skirt. Perhaps because the widow supports her son by painting nudes for a living.
Patrick Felham is in the market for a wife. He wants someone upstanding who would be an excellent example for his daughter. So why is he attracted to the woman with the notorious reputation?

A wonderful Regency romance in a compact package. Love, passion, conflict, a terrible secret, and the hope of a happy ending about to be thwarted…all in 68 pages! There’a tremendous amount of narrative and characterization in such a short space, from Patrick and Eliza to the elderly, but still lecherous Lord Lansdowne who appears quite the Voice of Reason in this short piece. Each player in this little drama is acutely drawn, even minor ones.

I thought this a delightful read. I love the Regency period, and this one filled the bill. It was short, but it didn't need more length. The author told the story and finished when it was done. I liked both the characters and the plot was something new. Very satisfying read. I'll be reading more of this author's work.

Barbara Monajem wrote her first story in third grade about apple tree gnomes. After dabbling in neighborhood musicals and teen melodrama, she published a middle-grade fantasy when her children were young. Now her kids are adults, and she's writing historical and paranormal romance for grownups. She lives in Georgia with an ever-shifting population of relatives, friends, and feline strays.
