Man how I enjoyed this book, it was action packed and down right awesome sauce. I am in love with that blue haired devil called Gideon. The Mr sexy, keeper of lies, which means he has to speak lies instead of truth. So everything he says means the complete opposite. He just met the keeper of nightmares and she is saying that they were married and shared a son, but Gideon can’t remember a thing but he knows this woman, he yearns for this woman.

He just met the keeper of nightmares and she is saying that they were married and shared a son, but Gideon can’t remember a thing but he knows this woman, he yearns for this woman.

So the lords are still fighting their human enemies who believe them evil, but it turns out they are the evil biatches, so it becomes a fight between the gods, and all that Gideon and Scarlet hold dear is put to the test. Scarlet is the daughter of Rhea, and hated by Cronus. So let’s say all the sexy powerful people want her dead, but the keeper of nightmares is no push over. She can kick ass and take names like any of the lords, and she wants Gideon something fierce. It seems though that someone has played some mind tricks on Scarlet and things aren’t what they seem. Will Scarlet lose it all? On the other hand, will she gain everything through their deception?

I am gonna tell you how I feel about everything in this book through Gideon speak.
‘I completely effing hated it. No, I don’t want to have sex with Gideon, I think he is the ugliest lord and the piercings do not make me lose my pants. I never once thought about an Amun/Aeron sandwich, just the thought of it disgusts me. I was in no way attracted to Scarlet; she was a complete bitch, and totally undeserving of Gideon. One of the books I hated the most in the series, not as action packed as the others.’
Take everything I just said and switch it around.

SIDE STORIES- Legion has people killing themselves off again. William has strong feelings for jailbait. Amun goes bat shit crazy, and man is the silence and brooding sexy on him. Paris’s hunter chick is back and bat shit crazy. All the shite is about to hit the fan.

I really enjoyed this book and I can’t wait for Amun’s book, he’s so bat shit crazy right now.

One of my biggest complaints in a lot of books I've read lately is the 'fiesty heroine' who is really closer to 'insufferable bitch' heroine. Gena Showalter tends to veer in that direction in this book, and then jerks the rug out from under the reader with a truly shocking twist. Unfortunately, Scarlett continues to be an insufferable bitch and never recovers my sympathy.

Another complaint... in many PNR that I'm reading lately is the tendency to veer off into side stories. Gena Showalter tends to veer in that direction in this book, and then jerks the rug out from under the reader with a truly shocking twist. Unfortunately, Scarlett continues to be an insufferable bitch and never recovers my sympathy.

Another complaint... in many PNR that I'm reading lately is the tendency to veer off into side stories. The latest Nalini Singh (Bonds of Justice) does this, completely muddying the water. Darkest Lie has side stories featuring Strider, Amun, Sienna, and so forth. While it does distract from the overall plot, those little windows are fascinating. There are just too many of them. It weakens the overall book. I finish a chapter or scene dedicated to Strider and have to remind myself what was going on with Gideon and Scarlett.

I've still got a ways to go, its been pretty good so far. I like Gideon an awful lot, and this has been a pretty good book for him.

OK, finished the book. What I wrote above still stands. My major beef is that I never warmed up to Scarlett. Granted, she had an awful background, but all that hatred, all that bull-headed behavior never really indicated to me that she was a woman of great potential, and certainly not someone the very Gods should be afraid of. She had a lot of potential, but then when she was progressing as a character, suddenly lapsed backward.

Poor Gideon takes blow after blow from her (unjustified, of course) and keeps coming back to slavishly take more. I wanted him to get mad and walk away! And given the hints about upcoming books, the next heroines are going to be just as insufferable, if not worse. Sienna, Ex, and Legion are just icky characters. Olivia and Anya were such refreshing changes of pace from the others.

The story is good, though the goals of the characters tend to leap around...going to kill Zeus...no, not Zeus, Rhea...no...Cronos...no... Some plot lines are half baked and never fully develop before they're closed. Very ambitious. Gideon...well, I kept thinking in "Gideon Speak" when I finished! LOL! He's a dear and a wonderful hero. He's one of the few heroes in the series who puts love before honor and brotherhood, which was a really appealing trait. I just wish Scarlett had been more up to his level.

For me, the most powerful element in the book was Amun's story. Though he didn't dominate the book in wordcount, his personality is so compelling it really snapped through the pages. I was stunned that Aeron put his friend on the line on behalf of Legion, who is quite honestly a really unappetizing character. This just seemed out of character for Aeron. Given Wrath's background (at the beginning of the series) I was really turned off that he'd make the demands on Amun that he did.

I started off this series calling it "BDB Lite." There are a lot of elements of JR Ward's Black Dagger Brotherhood. In "Darkest Passion" I started calling it "Lite Done Right." That was such a strong book with a really original heroine. But this one, she's dipping into Ward's really bad points. The continual Deus ex Machina, the awful heroines, (though at least her heroines aren't simply non-dimensional sex dolls in need of rescue.) The veering away from the main romance.

I know I'm being pretty scathing for a series and author I really like, but come on! This was such a mosh of good and bad.

I'm eagerly awaiting Torin, Amun and Kane's stories, and I pray that Ms Showalter lays off the hateful heroines. I never want to see Legion again, and as far as Ex and Sienna? Their men are probably better off without them. (less)

Scarlet, keeper of Nightmares, has been on her own for years. Abandoned by her husband, hated by her kin, she avoids others at all costs, and does anything needed to survive. When she learns of the Lord's in Budapest and their plan to recruit, or kill, the other Demon infected immortals, she pays them a wee visit to warn them off - what she didn't plan on though was getting locked up in their basement! While there Scarlet once again comes face-to-face with the man that ruined her life, her husband - Gideon! Determined to hurt him in return she agrees to answer a few of his questions, but ends up learning a few truths of her own that change everything she thought she knew about her life. I love this woman!! Love her strength and determination. My heart bled for her so many times and I was happy to see her get what she deserves.

What can I say -I loved, loved, loved this book!! It was packed full of so much action, betrayal, heartache, and love. I cried so many goddamn times I lost count by the end of it all. Gideon and Scarlet's relationship is amazing! I loved watching it all unfold and destroy them one little piece at a time until they were both left raw from it. Then to see them rebuild the shambles of their so called love and make something good come from it all. It was great! *sigh* Gods there where so many amazing scenes in this book. Most of which made me cry! I hated reading about how shitty Scarlet's life had been. The poor woman was treated so badly by her own parents that another God had to intervene. Then to have the man she loved leave, be possessed by the Demon of Nightmares, among other things, was just too much. But she never let it stop her. She fought for what she wanted, and got it in the end. The woman rocks!!

Then the tears started when Scarlet told Gideon about Steel, making him feel like the biggest dick on the planet for leaving them. It was horrible because Gideon cried!! He openly cried like a baby and spoke the truth in order to get into the Heavens and kill Zeus - not that Cronus would allow it. Asshat!! I swear I melted for Gideon all over again here. Then there was the scene when Scarlett showed Gideon their wedding night. Every single detail, from him sneaking into her cell, to the special ceremony, and their loving - To Part Is To Die - Gideon cried again!! It made my chest ache! And then to find out what her mum and aunt had done!! It made me ache all the more for them. *sniff*

What I did love though was the way Gideon was always asking Scarlet who she was today. He was determined to have her use his name. It was kind of sweet, and made me smile. When you read their conversation at the motel about what names they use in the mortal world you'll understand. Scarlet Pattinson! I laughed so much at that, but Gideon was not amused. LOL. And of course as with all the other books I loved being able to see what was going on with the other Lords. We get to see Wrath once more and met his new host. *gasp* It's a shocker!! Has so many thoughts going through my head. As does the whole thing with Aeron, Amun and William going into Hell for Legion. WTH is going on with William? Who is he!? Gods, Gena is such a damn tease!! Hope we don't have to wait too long to find out.

Anywho, as I said before this is an amazing read! The whole goddamn story was heartbreaking, and I was never happier to see two people fall in love. They deserve each other! you really need to read this book and see for yourselves!

Before I get started on discussing anything about this book I just wanna make it known that our "heroine" Scarlet was a great big slice of fat from the annoyance meat. I typically don't really go all "oh, boy! She's the bomb" with Gena's leading ladies, I'm really interested in learning more about the pretty mens but Scarlet was just too much for me and the number one reason why I knocked a star off this book.

Yep, this one made me cry. It was just so....so....sobs...dysfunctional families aside I just really felt for Gideon and Scarlet. When everything was revealed the devastation practically leapt off the page.

I wondered how Lies would be written especially since he can't ever utter truth without feeling debilitating pain. So he's with a woman he loves but can never say that....tricky....but it was cleverly done. This is our first demon/demon pairing too which 100% makes sense now.

Loved Gideon, but don't know if I ever really warmed up to Scarlet. I thought the twist was really interesting and it never ceases to amaze me how Gena Showalter places her characters in these messes. I was so frustrated with Strider, but I am really excited with his book. I can't believe what Aaron did to Amun, as that seemed like it was extremely out of character for him.

Wow, this book was really hard to get through. I enjoyed the story, that wasn't the problem. It was written about the Demon Lies and Lies can't tell the truth without experiencing pain. Well that makes reading a story very difficult when everything out of the Hero's mouth is a lie. (No fun trying to decipher everything you read) It makes it impossible to lose yourself in the story. The 3 star is generous because all of the other mini plots taking place that are very interesting.

Gideon was the first Lord I’ve seen who actually got along (somewhat) with his demon. It added an air of originality. And the voice for Gideon was also quite different from the other Lords. It was almost as if the YA novels Ms. Showalter’s been writing filtered into this one. Because he so like totally used the lingo, if you know what I mean? Okay. I’ve dated myself to the 80s and haven’t a clue how kids talk today. Let’s move on. Later in the novel, I didn’t notice the kid talk so much. So maybe Ms. Showalter needed to make the transition into the adult world.

So opposite day with Gideon Lord. How did it go? Well, as I suspected, it got on my last nerve. And really, I didn’t think it had to be so bad. I swear 100 words could have been shaved off the book if Ms. Showalter had let me think for myself. But no, she insisted on interpreting EVERYTHING Gideon said. “I hate you.” Which in Gideon talk really meant I love you. “You, devil.” Devil as in Angel. Yes, the entire book was like that, I kid you not (I wish I could add a smiley face with the mouth drawn across in a straight line, but I don’t know how.)

And I hate to say it, but when Gideon told the truth it got on my nerves even more, cause it was pointless. Remember how he lost his hands in the first place? Come on… let’s not be stupid.

Scarlet was okay. Actually, she started out great. She’s the first female Lord who’s had a major role. Tough? Yep. Spunky? Double check. An unlike the other Lords, she really knew how to use her demon to be most effective. I love that she didn’t shy away from going all kickass. Unfortunately, she lost some of her backbone as the story possessed. I swear she turned into a totally different person. Not until the end did she become the Scarlet I grew to know and love from the beginning. Odd, I always thought the characters were suppose to experience growth, not decline then end up where they started. Go figure.

So I liked the beginning. Then we hit chapter 6. I don’t know what the deal is with chapter 6 and the switch to a secondary character POV, but it happened in the Darkest Passion also. Only this time, there were more switches to secondary characters than before. All I could think about was, “Please don’t do to the Lords of the Underworld what J.R. Ward did to the Black Dagger Brotherhood.” Oh my word did I hate the billion and seven story arcs in Lover Mine.

The other thing about the POV switches for the Darkest Lie was they were awkward. It’d go from a sensual scene to a blood and gore scene, then back to sensual again. My mind was like, WTF? After visualizing folks getting beaten to death with their own arms, I’m so not down with a tender caress. Not only that, but a lot of the secondary character scenes trumped the Gideon/Scarlet scenes. I found myself caring more about Strider and Amun than any of the horizontal tangos the hero/heroine had planned. Which is a shame, cause the couple really deserved their own book rather than share the glory with folks soon to have their own titles.

I guess my bottom line is that the book didn’t have to be 444 pages long. Cut the translations and the side character arcs, and I think the book would have been okay. Not the greatest, but certainly a lot better than it was.

By the way, and I don’t think this is a spoiler, but Paris didn’t appear even once in this novel. Anyone remember what happened to him? I totally forgot what happened to him in the last novel.(less)

Ah…such a complicated book and such a twist and good use of the word lie. Gideon is a Lord of the Underworld, his demon Lies, so he cannot speak the truth if he does he experiences pain and 99 % of the time he can tell when people are lying, sadly he can’t tell if Scarlet, the recently captured Titan God who houses the demon nightmare, is lying. She told him she is his wife and then shut down plus they both have the same tattoo. He needs answers so he decides to take her out of the fortress and seduce them out of her. It takes some doing and then in a fit of anger she tells him they had a son named Steel.

The story comes out of her slowly, Scarlet was the result of an affair her mother Rhea(wife of Cronus) had with a mortal and grew up in Tartarus, tortured by the other Gods, spending her first few years being a slave to her mother, doing everything for her, even seducing others but her mother and Cronus kept on trying to kill her until a God put up a curse on them, the more they attacked her the older they grew but that didn’t stop them much. He was the guard there and they fell in love and secretly married and he promised to do anything for her (Pandora’s box mission) and then he didn’t return and she was housed with a demon in her, lost for years, her son taken away because of who she was. Once she gained control she again thought of Gideon and his absence made her think he was dead and she grieved for him. She found her son, who had been abused all his life and then saw him being slaughtered by Zeus.
When she got free she saw him hale an hearty with other females and her heart broke even further and she tried to be with others but couldn’t.

When Gideon learns all of this he is enraged at everything including himself. Scarlet has led a life devoid of any love and he added to it and he hates it that someone messed with his memories and then later comes a twist I was not expecting. Scarlet was the one who had been lied to, there had been no son, no marriage, nothing instead her aunt(memory Goddess) and mother had messed with her, hoping that the life of pain and grief would make her end her life. When she learns all of this she is distraught wanting to leave Gideon but he doesn’t care that she is not his wife or that they were never together, he has come to see her as his. He does want revenge on her aunt and mom though.

On other note, Amun and William accompany Aeron on his mission to rescue Legion from hell and Amun is left in a bad condition, his demonic side fully taking over. Strider meanwhile decides to travel to the temple of Unspoken One’s and sees Hunters on the way and captures Haidee, the bait who killed Baden(distrust) and is no longer human, when she escapes he gives the Unspoken One’s the invisibility cloak in return for her. Sienna hates Cronus for putting Wrath into her and is plotting revenge.

As usual the book was complicated as hell. There are revelations, Gideon’s demon is female and in love with Nightmare, plus both their demons can leave. I liked the romance, there was plenty of angst and Scarlet tried to put distance between them but Gideon was not having it.

I have to say one thing Rhea is despicable, trying to seduce her daughter’s lover and then the memory thing, she deserves to die and I hope to see that.

Gemeinsam kämpfen sie gegen die Jäger, Menschen, die dem Glauben folgen, die Herren seien für das gesamte Böse auf der Welt verantwortlich. Angeführt werden diese von Galen, der den Dämon der Hoffnung in sich trägt. Zusammen mit den Jägern ist es sein Ziel, die Herren auszulöschen und die Büchse der Pandorra zu finden, deren Öffnung einst dafür gesorgt hatte, dass die Dämonen von den Kriegern Besitz ergriffen haben. Dabei will Galen und seine Schar so viele besessene Krieger wie möglich in die eigenen Reihen aufnehmen, um die Büchse zu finden.
Doch auch die Herren sind auf der Suche nach Unterstützung und haben auf der Suche Scarlet, die Herrin der Albträume gefangen genommen. Nachdem Gideon ihr in den Kerkern der Burg begegnet ist, behauptet sie stets, er sei ihr Mann und dass sie in der Vergangenheit verheiratet gewesen waren. Obwohl Gideon normalerweise die Wahrheit von der Lüge unterscheiden kann, weiß er nicht, ob Scarlet die Wahrheit spricht oder nicht. Außerdem kann er sich nicht an eine gemeinsame Zeit mit ihr erinnern. Doch er will alles über ihre mögliche Vergangenheit herausfinden und er wird von einem Verlangen nach ihr übermannt, wie er es noch nie zuvor erlebt hat.

Fazit:
„Schwarze Lügen“ ist der sechste Band der „Herren der Unterwelt“-Reihe von Gena Showalter. Es geht wie gewohnt sehr rasant in der Story weiter und schildert den „roten Faden“, der im Hintergrund weiter läuft, aus den Perspektiven verschiedener Charaktere, während die Geschichte rund um das aktuelle Paar im Vordergrund steht.
Diesmal geht es um Gideon, dem Hüter des Dämons der Lügen und um Scarlet, die Albträume in sich trägt. Obwohl Gideon die Wahrheit stets von der Lüge unterscheiden kann, weiß er nicht, ob Scarlets Behauptung, die beiden seien verheiratet, der Wahrheit entspricht oder ob es eine Falle ist. Um dies herauszufinden entführt er Scarlet aus den Kerkern der Burg, um ihr Vertrauen zu gewinnen und mehr Informationen von ihr zu erhalten. Aus diesem Bedürfnis wird jedoch schon sehr bald Verlangen und die beiden können die Finger kaum noch voneinander lassen. Während Scarlet sich immer wieder schwört, ihre selbst auferlegten Grenzen nicht zu überschreiten und ihr eingefrorenes Herz nicht auftauen zu lassen, ist es Gideons größter Wunsch, sie ganz zu besitzen. Doch was genau steckt hinter der vermeintlichen Hochzeit und den anderen Details, die die beiden im Laufe der Geschichte erfahren? Was ist wahr und was ist gelogen?
Gideon lernt man in diesem Band als fürsorglichen und besorgten Liebhaber kennen, der für seine Frau sein Leben hergeben würde, während Scarlet sich immer wieder gegen ihre Prinzipien stellt und ihren Ängsten und Sorgen freien Lauf lässt. Sie wirkt ab und zu ein wenig anstrengend und man kann Gideon nur bewundern, wie er in so mancher Situation die Nerven behalten konnte.

Ich muss zugeben, ich hatte zu Beginn des Buches meine Bedenken. Gideon taucht schon in den vorherigen Bänden des Öfteren auf und kann auf Grund seines Dämons nur Lügen, da er sonst unsägliche Schmerzen erleiden muss. Mir graute ein wenig davor, dass seine Sprache sehr anstrengend werden würde, doch ganz im Gegenteil – man gewöhnt sich sehr schnell daran und ich zolle der Autorin, Gena Showalter, meinen größten Respekt, da es wahrscheinlich viel Arbeit und nicht immer einfach war, stets das Gegenteil zu beschreiben.
Dieser Band war meiner Meinung nach der bisher bettlastigste der Reihe. Allerdings gab es wieder allerhand Story und Entwicklungen, die sogar schon den nächsten Band vorbereiten und man sich denken kann, um wen es gehen wird.
Dramatische Wendungen, spannende Action und, wie bereits von Gena Showalter gewohnt, sehr heiße Szenen. Außerdem ein Ende, das wie immer Lust auf mehr macht.

Gena Showalter’s „Herren der Unterwelt“-Reihe ist ein absolutes Must Have für Fans der griechischen Mythologie und Fantasy Romance. Ein Buch besser als das andere mit einer super spannenden Story und sehr… netten Herren. Unbedingt empfehlenswert.(less)

I've been meaning to review this series of books ever since I listened to book 1. But after just finishing this book, I have to start with this one.
I'm a big fan of paranormal romances but this series has surpassed what I've read before. Doch das ist noch lange nicht alles ...

Geschrieben ist dieser Roman wieder aus mehreren verschienden Sichtweisen und so sind es nicht nur Gideons und Scarlets gedanken, denen der Leser folgt, sondern auch Strider, der Hüter des Dämons der Niederlage, und Amun, der Hüter des Dämons der Geheimnisse, werden dem Leser durch ihre Sichtweisen nähergebracht. Und genau hier wird deutlich wie unterschiedlich sich doch die Herren mit ihren Dämonen und Gedanken sind, denn keiner gleicht dem anderen. Nur eines haben sie meineinsam: Sie sind durch und durch Krieger.
Was ich besonders interessant fand waren kleine Einspielungen von Sienna, der ehemaligen Jägern, die in Paris Armen starb und dessen Geschichte noch auf uns wartet. Es waren diese kleinen Szenen die mir absolut Lust auf mehr informationen über Paris gemacht haben, die mir (und allen anderen Lesern) in diesem Buch aber verwehrt werden.

Die beiden Protagonisten haben es nicht einfach, so kann Gideon niemals sagen was er wirklich meint und Scarlet lässt ihn in ihrer Launenhaftigkeit oftmals einfach auflaufen - natürlich zur Belustigung des Lesers. So ist es nicht nur eine herausforderung für die Autorin gewesen in der Gideon-Sprache zu schreiben, sondern auch der Leser kommt ganz auf seine Kosten. Geschmunzelt habe ich oftmals bei Gideons Flüchen, die als Lüge dann aus so etwas "strahlender Sonnenschein" oder ähnlichem bestimmt. Oder wie sagt man einer Frau, dass man sie liebt, wenn man doch nur lügen darf. Doch, dem Himmel sei dank, versteht Scarlet Gideon wie er es sagt und was er tatsächlich meint ... und niemals war "Ich hasse Dich, Teufel." eine schönere Liebeserklärung.

Doch es ist nicht immer eitler Sonnenscheint und gerade Scarlet erlebt am eigenen Leib was es heißt zwischen Wahrheit und Lüge nicht unterscheiden zu können und ihren eigenen Erinnerungen schlussendlich keinem Glauben mehr schenken zu dürfen. Es ist nicht einfach sage ich euch und ihr dürft euch auf einige Einmischung der Götter gefasst machen!

Die Liebesgeschichte von Gideoon und Scarlet empfand ich persönlich zwar als angenehm, aber mir fehlte irgendwie dieser Augenblick des verliebens. Natürlich wird an einer Stelle erwähnt, dass Gid sich klar wird verliebt zu sein, allerdings konnte ich nicht ganz nachvollziehen warum auf einmal. Denn alle Erkenntnisse die ihn zu dem Schluss führen verliebt zu sein hat er die ganze Zeit vor Augen. Es kam also einfach nicht bei mir an. Wobei ich dazu sagen möchte, dass Gideons und Scarlets Geschichte mich von Anfang an nicht sehr gereizt hat.
Dass bei den beiden eine starke erotische Anziehung besteht ist von Anfang an nicht zu übersehen, denn es fliegen die erotischen Lust-Funken was das Zeug hält, genau wie der Leser es bereits von der Autorin, Gena Showalter, kennt.

Wie oben bereits erwähnt erhält der Leser auch Einblicke in die Gedankenwelt von Strider und Amun, was wirklich mal eine nette Abwechslung war und gerade Amun hat meine Sympathie für sich geweckt, aber ebenfalls sehr spannend ist, dass der Leser endlich ein klein wenig mehr über William erfährt. Bisher war er nur der Verführer, der wegen Anja bei den Herren wohnt. Nun bekommt sein Charakter ein bisschen mehr Farbe, der Leser erhält häppchenweise Informationen darüber wer er eigentlich ist. Und was da an's Licht kommt ist wirklich pikant, liebe Leser!

Alles in allem ist dieser Band vor allem eine Lese-Herausforderung, was Gideon angeht. Lese die Lüge und erkenne die Wahrheit! Genau das bringt den Leser gerne einmal zum schmunzeln. Dennoch bin ich von der Liebesgeschichte nicht allzu überzeugt, wobei dies auf persönlicher vorliebe basiert. Alles in allem eine nette Fortsetzung bei der mir vor allem die Geschichts-Schnipsel der anderen Herren und Nicht-Herren gefallen haben.

Ich gebe diesem Buch dennoch 4/5 Sternen.(less)

This is one of the book that i least like from LOTU series.
I think the most important cause is while reading the book i become very annoyed with "Gideon language".

Gideon is paired with Scarlett. A keeper of nightmare who claimed that she is his wife but whom he has no recollection what so ever.

Sadly, not one of my favorites. Lies, is truly hard to read about because Gideon, as Lies, is forced to say, "I hate you," rather than I love you. He says, "Why aren't you here?" meaning, "Why are you here?" This makes for a hard time reading and while I know Lies has to be part of Pandora's box, why not make it so the woman he loves own ability makes it so Gideon can tell the truth, which is part was done but almost as an afterthought.

Gideon is one of the warriors who used to guard the God Zeus, but was also part of the group who had decided to open "Pandora's Box". "The Darkest Lie," my favorite in the "Lords of the Underworld" series, because Gideon, if he was real, would be the man of my dreams or more like the demon of my dreams. His conversation with Olivia in "The Darkest Passion" was extremely entertaining. If you haven't figured it out by now, Gideon is possessed by the demon of lies. He can never speak the truth. Well, he can, but he has to endure excruciating pain.

While reading Gideon talk, I wondered how Showalter writes his dialogue. Does she write the truth first then covert it into lies? Does she get confused in the process of writing Gideon talk? Well, I think its fun to read and wish there was another Gideon book, because I could read and read about him for forever.

Well, The Darkest Lie was a bit different from the other books. I say this, because the girl was different. Scarlet may just have beat out Anya as my favorite female in the Lords series. I like her, because she's possessed with the demon nightmares, so the girl is frightening. What a weapon for the Lords against the hunters! Plus, Scarlet had such a tortured childhood, it made my heart bleed for her. Rhea is one bitch of a mother. I'll be happy to see her downfall.

I'll try to not give too many spoilers in this review. But Scarlet's childhood was horrible. Her auntie and mother are pure evil. The fight between Mnemosyne (yeah I know that's a mouthful and I had as much trouble as Gideon saying it in my head) and Scarlet was hilarious. Cronus and his popcorn. And yuck, hot sauce on popcorn, no Gideon that would not be tasty, but he is a bit weird.

I really liked how the truth unfolds and have to agree it is the darkest lie or more like lies. How can I describe it without giving away the story? Showalter was creative in telling us Gideon's story by not basing the book on why he was partnered with lies, but about the lies that brought Scarlet and him together. Did I give anything away? Hope not!

Gideon has the same tattoo that Scarlet has on her lower back. He has a couple more tats that connect him to Scar. Gideon described this body art and how he wanted to lick the identical tattoo on Scarlet, yeah, I wanted to lick it, too. Showalter's erotic and vivid descriptions seduces the reader and puts us in the same lustful mindset as the charachers. What is this tattoo? You guessed it, read "The Darkest Lie" and the vivid description of it was explained a few times throughout the book.

And even when they both spoke in opposites. How cute! Sometimes Scarlett did annoy me. Sometimes tough girls in books annoy me. But then again I do annoy easily.

Two scenes that I really liked was Gideon's one interaction with Torin. Torin always comes off as funny and nice. I can't wait to read his book and see how his story will turn out. I also liked the scene where he fights Galen. His first hit was hilarious.

One thing that was weird was that the story was just a little too fluffy – especially for a Lord of the Underworld. There is absolutely no reason why I should ever use the term, “How cute!” in a review of these books. Girly tattoo aside I was surprised that Gideon didn't start writing her poems. He also spent a significant part of the book recovering. Newsflash, we all know you speak the opposite of what you want to say, no need to punish yourself trying to get your point across!

Writers listen up! if it's in your agenda to write a novel featuring a 30+ hero and a heroine that turned 18 yesterday, just... don't, ok? It's not cool. Could totally swing if she was drinking age but man... 18 is like high school! crazy eyes If this going to become a trend because if so, I'm out. (but only after I finish Kiss of Snow because let's face it, I've got problems.) The whole direction of the William storyline is giving me the creeps. And you know something is wrong because nothing about William should give you the creeps.

What was up with all the pop references and the Team BLANK stuff, ugh!

In the last book, Gideon found out that he was (and still is) married to Scarlet--keeper of Nightmares. Only he has no memory of her. Not just that, but the Lords currently have Scarlet in their dungeon.

I liked this book because I liked Gideon. I've liked him from the start. I even liked Scarlet. She was an unorthodox heroine (to say the least) but not unlikable. What I didn't like was all the mythology, Greek and otherwise. It was very confusing, especially on top of all the Gideon speak. It was kind of like reading one of Sherrilyn Kenyon's books, actually. I never thought of it that way until now.

Something interesting about Scarlet was that while she did affect people's dreams in a bad way, she could affect the dreams of bad people. So she could affect the dreams of, say, Galen. That kind of backfires on her when Galen decides that he'll go to Gideon instead of waiting for Gideon to come kill him.

Honestly, the most interesting part of the book was where Aeron, Amum, and William go to Hell to rescue Legion. It shows an interesting side to both Amum and William, something I'm really looking forward to reading more about. We also get to learn more about Strider, someone that I can't wait to read more about.

My final verdict on this book is that while I enjoyed Gideon and Scarlet getting their happy ending, I enjoyed the secondary stories far more. I loved the progression of the series but I didn't love the book.

I bought this book after I read The Darkest Whisper and The Darkest Passion. I really enjoyed them and I decided to go forward with the books in the series and later read the previous ones.
While waiting for my copy of this book to arrive from The Book Depository, I read some reviews and they were all mostly negative. These reviews spoiled my experience of the story.
