Piet, a young boy in World War 2 Netherlands, helps his neighbors skate to safety in Belgium.
Louise Borden includes just the right of information about skating and Dutch life during World War 2. The information was helpful and interesting without being too detailed. The illustrations complemented the text and the images of the children skating made it easier to understand the storyline.
Recommended as a middle grade picture book. This would also make a good title to u More...

Timely with the winter Olympics .... I learned a lot about ice skates and the role they played in Netherlands (who knew?) I enjoy picture books that teach me a thing or two! This is for older children and a gentle intro to World War II and the German occupation. The illustrations are beautiful and really made the book for me. I also enjoyed the new vocbulary and the underlying theme of courage.

A longer picture book (44 pages) that tells the story of a young Dutch boy who escorted two siblings across the Holland/Belgium border during World War II. This is a great story of bravery and using the gifts God has given you to help others. In this boy's case, he was a strong skater, quick thinker, and good leader.

I just love this book.
I love the boy learning about his hero and setting a goal of skating like him.
I like the dealing with the German occupation as a defining time.
I like the bravery of the young boy skating across the border with two children to a safer environment.
It's just a good story

Three kids travel from one city to another by skating on frozen rivers in the Netherlands. They are trying to get away from German soldiers. They pretend that they are just skating for fun. They are stopped by soldiers. I guess I like it because I have a soft spot for Germany.

Amazing book! It shows how young children who are surrounded by the horrors of WWII learn to face their fears and skate to safety. This book is a great book to read to children to get them interested in history. The pictures are amazing!

Excellent book, excellent story. I can't imagine asking a 10 year old to do what this kid did. Makes me believe there's a hero in all of us, if we are just willing to act courageously.

this is a long picture book--don't pick it up and think it'll be a 2 minute good night story. I do like that it's a true story from WWII in the Netherlands

About my beloved Holland. Smacks of Number the Stars. Intriguing. Based on a true story.

I'm not sure how much of this story is true.
This is a heroic story, regardless of how real it is, of how a boy skated his friends to safety from Holland during WWII. The danger is a bit understated, so this book is suitable for more sensitive children.

This was another great WWII story from Louise Borden that put life during wartime into perspective. My daughter and I enjoyed it very much.
