This is a Department Z adventure --- spies, WW, murder …. This is the first Adventure Z story by Creasey that I’ve read and found it really well written with lots of surprises and unexpected happening in London during the Blitz. He really writes a good mystery in under 200 pages - I have read all of his Toff books and enjoyed each and every one of them!

Perhaps this book seemed better during World War 2, when it was written, but it seems slow now and has too many scenes that feel like filler. Hard to understand at this remove how the public supported the Department Z books for so long.
