Not up to Peck's usual standards. It's a fantasy, but not strongly so. I think it would be horror, but it isn't frightening or terribly suspenseful. Until the last quarter of the book, it's not clear what the major conflict in this book is; I kept wondering if something was going to happen or whether the point of the story was just to illustrate the pointlessness of wanting nothing other than to be accepted by wealthy, popular, academically successful, good-looking and exclusive high school frie

It's hard to really review this book because saying too much will give away the spoilers-and it's a fairly short book, you don't want any spoilers or it ruins the whole thing.
I was a bit disappointed in this book. I didn't think the characters were that well fleshed out. We don't really know why the popular girls pick Kerry, we can guess it's because she's easily manipulated, though I don't think that will be clear to younger readers. We also don't really see More...

Kerry's a sophomore at Pondfield High School. She sits at lunch pretending to talk on her cell, because her best friend transferred schools and she has no one to hang out with. One day she's swept in THE circle of girls: Tanya-a Senior, beautiful, in charge, organised and so knowledgeable about everyone and everything. Natalie -a Senior, the prettiest one. Makenzie - a Junior, 'ginger' hair, tiny and full of life.
Right from the beginning Tanya repeatedly says to Kerry "Try to keep More...

This is just too weird. So this outsider teenager gets to be friends with three cool girls, that don't treat her very nicely and seem to be using her. They die in a car crash and she's all broken up about it and then she get's a text message from them...and it get's weirder still!!!
Too weird and somehow I understand when authors leave too much to your own interpretation and you have to write parts of the story in yourself; and to a certain degree that's OK even necessary but too much is ju More...

For one who writes so convincingly in the voice of a teenage girl, using trendy pop lingo and acquiescing completely to the modern world in which the girl lives, author Richard Peck still most definitely has one foot firmly planted in the camp of the old-fashioned writers of bygone days. As one of few prominent authors today who still produce their books exclusively by way of typewriter, Richard Peck has nevertheless written many stories that embrace the most modern of technologies. He frequen

3/1/11 ** I heard Peck speak about this book back in October. Though I was intrigued with the premise, I feared that it would be too scary for my taste, with the potential for nightmares. When Peck was so gracious as to read Michael's novel AND offer a review, I knew that I'd have to go ahead and read this.
Peck got the idea for the book when he read a newspaper article about a teen who was killed in a car accident while talking on the phone. He wondered about the impact on the peopl More...

Richard Peck knows how to write a good story--and fans of Blossom Culp won't be disappointed by this fast read. This is a modern cautionary tale about the dangers of being too concerned with being one of the "in-crowd."
Kerry can't believe that the three most popular girls at her high school, Tanya, Natalie and Makenzie have chosen her to join their circle. She basks in their reflected glow, until they are killed in a car crash when, at the time Tanya, who was driving, was More...

I was utterly unthrilled with this book. Richard Peck used to be one of my favorite authors when I was a kid - maybe I should revisit those books.
The main character was annoying. The side characters were annoying. The writing felt choppy. Just - bleah.
Product Description
Kerry is chosen by the coolest clique in school and so she thinks life has finally begun. But then it seems all over when her three friends are killed in a shocking car accident. Or are they? More...

I really tried to get into this book but for some reason it fell flat for me. Maybe it was that I didn't really like the narrator, Kerry. Or that the themes in the story were not unique and, in the end, predictable. But to me, this book was just okay. Let me explain:
The first half of the book really dragged for me. In this first half you meet Kerry and how she wants to be popular and will do anything to get noticed by the three most popular girls (Tanya, Natalie and Makenzie) in h More...

I was so angry when I first received these books, over having to pay the duty on a review copy, that I just wanted to read them and get them out of my sight. The first part of the book didn't help any. It was slow-paced, and not much really forming as in way of a story, it was just four girls in school. Whoopie!
Then the second half, picked up almost out of nowhere.
It did make up for any feelings I previously had, as I swept through the pages like a madwoman. I had to know what was go More...

Usually Richard Peck + Paranormal = A Good Book, but I was a little disappointed in this one. On the plus side, it was easy to get into and kept me turning the pages wondering what was going to happen. The plot is wafer-thin, but for someone who just wants a creepy little ghost story it delivers the goods. My biggest problem was with the characterization; all of the characters felt very shallow and one-dimensional and under-developed, even the narrator. I suppose it's a compliment, in a backhand

I really like Richard Peck, but I'm not quite sure how I feel about this one. It certainly has reader appeal for the intended audience, and the themes are age appropriate. But I was vaguely unsatisfied, unsettled when it was over. The bad part is that I can't put my finger on what it is that bothers me. The literary elements are well done... setting, theme, character, tone, et al. At first I thought I wanted more background on the Spence/Alyssa/Tanya triangle, but that's not it. The plot is well

Kerry is a follower. She lived her life on the fringe of the cool table at lunch, until she was invited to join up with the it girls at her school, beautiful Natalie, clever Makenzie and the master manipulator Tanya. The girls draw her into their world, using her, but she is crushed when her only "friends" die in a tragic car accident. Kerry wallows in the aftermath of their death, but soon receives a mysterious text message from Tanya. The trio of mean girls is back, and they need Ker

Okay, this book was something I didn't expect. It was a sort of ghost story and I guess I was expecting something more like the many werewolf, pixie and vampire books I've been reviewing lately. This was definitely NOT like that. It wasn't scary, which is good, because I hate scary. It was a bit gorey at times though. It was a pretty clean read, no language, no sex. 2.5 stars from me on this one. While I can't say I loved it, I didn't dislike it either. I think it's just personal prefere

This book has several different themes. First is, what would you do to be part of the in-crowd? Then there is the question, what is friendship? Also the biggest is, what would you do to stay or what would you try to take with you when you leave this world? This book was a little slow at first and then it was a little confusing because you werent sure what the girls were or what they were doing there. I will say that I am glad I checked this book out of the library instead of buying it because,

I listened to the audio book version of this novel. I liked the narration, it was fun to listen to. I really would say this book is a 2.5, but I gave it a 3 for the audio. I LOVE Richard Peck's books, but this one left me wanting more. I picked up on the themes of this book, and saw where the author was going with the story. The execution, however, didn't quite make it for me. I wanted more from the characters, especially Kerry. I felt she was just too shallow and naive to be completely bel

This book is great if you are into the highscool cliques and the social groups . He captured what it was to be a highscool student. Other than that the book was very predictable, and he glossed over major events in the book that left me saying what happened here. The book was around 200 pages, if he took the time to explain things a little better it would have added volume and substance. He did give vivid detail on the characters in his book, however. Its a real shame this book with a little more

I didn't like this book. I realized halfway through that I was skimming and I couldn't bring myself to stop. It didn't interest me much. The plot was expected but not really anything special. I didn't connect to the story and so much of it made me wonder what's the point and how relevant some of the writing really was. What happened also wasn't exactly clear and was probably meant to be thrilling but I didn't really feel that way. I wish I liked this book more but it wa More...

Ummmm...it was interesting and very different from Peck's other novels. In fact, I never would have guessed it was written by him if his name hadn't been on the title page. This story is about three teens that die in a car accident, but continue to communicate and manipulate a friend they left behind. The message of being your own person and not allowing others to control you is good for teens, but the story itself left me feeling disappointed. Peck does much better in his humourous small to

Love Richard Peck's historical (and sometimes hysterical) fiction. This is a foray into the alphagrrrl table in high school. Tanya rules the school with cohorts Natalie (beautiful) and Mackenzie (British). Enter lonely unimaginative Kerry who is mysteriously brought into the fold and blindly follows along Trying To Keep Up.
I won't spoil the twists and turns except to say that ultimately Peck pulls it all together in a way that gives us hope for Kerry. I actually wondered at one point if More...

I remember reading Richard Peck twenty-some years ago, and was pretty impressed that he still manages to pull off YA books, complete with believable technology. Plus, believable girl characters --- where did he learn about underwire bras and designer clothes, you have to wonder? He seems to know a lot more than I do....
That said, I wasn't in love with the characters or story line. It felt a bit like his agent asked him if he could write a vampire book and he said, "No, but I'll More...

Richard Peck is one of my favorite authors of all times. He has been publishing books in the early 1970s and I grew up reading his stories. He is an amazing story teller and Three Quarters Dead is a shinning example of everything I love about his writing.
There is something fundamentally creepy about this book. I didn't actually like many of the characters but my dislikes worked for the story. The setting was somewhat ordinary but the plot was so well developed that it didn't matter. Th More...

A creepy tale wrapped in a tried and tired tale of the avergae girls wanting desperately to be popular. When the coolest clique takes her in, she's (predicatabily) too naive and mmek not only to wonder why, but to follow along blindly, playing in to crule pranks. The supernatural aspects are great- just edgy enough, but the main character need s a spine, and the stereotypes of the H.S. wolrd have been done a million times. For teens who want the gossip-girl types to go goth.

Truth is sometimes stranger than fiction. Peck read a newspaper article about a car crash that killed five teenagers while the driver was texting and was inspired to write this supernatural novel. After her three best friends – the popular girls – die in a car crash, Kerry keeps getting texts from the dead. They need her life to regain theirs and what follows is a spooky look at the power of popularity. The master has done is again! For grades 7 and up -Cathy

This book didn't really make any sense. The writing was odd and jolted, and before I even understood what was going on, we suddenly jumped forward six months after a car accident. I kept going because it was weirdly readable, and because it was so short. I had grabbed this off the library shelf based on nothing but the title and cover and I certainly didn't HATE it - just didn't really like it. There were a lot of unanswered questions at the end, too.

I'm not sure I have ever rated a book 1 star before. I listened to the audio book while at work today (have 30 min left to listen to, but wanted to go ahead and write my review). Since the beginning of the book I have not been able to get into it....and I'm one who loves most any book, especially young adult. While listening to it, when the reader used her "Kerry" voice it made me think of Shellsea from Fish Hooks. I felt that a lot was left out of the story.
