What a great addition to the urban fantasy genre. Mercy is a likeable and engaging protagonist. She doesn't come off as invincible and inhuman in her buttkicking abilities, yet at the same time, she is comfortable in her own skin and can hold her own.
The universe is interesting, much like the world we live in, save the addition of preternatural creatues such as werewolves, vampires, fae, and coyote shifters like Mercy, which seem quite rare.

The cover is shit
PNR are all the same
Moon Called is still good.
What could be better than a Haiku review?
Well, other than a proper review, I guess...
The thing is, I did REALLY enjoy this book - it has a lot to recommend itself to readers with. Mercy is a nice character. She's not a complete badass but she's not a push over either.
There's a mystery - though the mystery was interesting it all came up kind of lame in the end.

After all the reviews I had read about this book, I though this series would be a good one. Everyone was giving 5 stars to this book,so I had high expectations for it. Maybe that was the problem.
It wasn't a bad book. The problem was that it was really slow. The first half of the book was really boring, it only talked about her. Around the page 100, comes this hot-sexy alpha wolf who lets you think that the book is going to turn out more interesting; but then things get messed up when...more

Moon Called is a run of the mill Urban Fantasy pick. It was entertaining enough to keep my attention, but didn’t elicit any strong feelings of extreme like or dislike. Initially I thought I would totally dig it. The heroine, Mercy, is a tatted up car mechanic. Talk about an interesting angle. But despite Mercy’s uniqueness in this urban fantasy genre, where more often than not, the females are all articulate journalists or cops and yet complete bombshells, Mercy, with all her otherness, still ...more
Review for the book March 2009:
I love the character Mercy Thompson. She is fiesty, sarcastic, knows how to pick her battles, and smart.
I really liked how much detail went into all the politics and relationships in all the different types of paranormal creatures. It was super detailed with out page long info-dump paragraphs, and relly helped deepen the plot.

It pains me to say this (and I may lose my "guy" cred), but I'm a big fan of the urban-fantasy sub-genre. While I tend to lean more towards male protagonists (i.e. Butcher's Dresdan Files and Green's Nightside series), I still love me a good, tough female protagonist. That being said, I was hesitant to pick this one up because of the abysmal Harlequin like cover. In my opinion, many of the current crop of urban-fantasy covers look like they belong in the romance section. Why do I e...more
I find this book really hard to rate.
I like Briggs' writing style. Some people have described it as 'simple but effective' and I find that a fitting description.
Mercy Thompson is a very likable protagonist. She is sympathetic and not-pretentious. She is smart and courageous without trying to be the tough heroine.

After attempting to read "Moon Called" at least 5 times I am finally giving up. There is absolutely no chance I will ever read the sequels, so why bother?
I am a fan of urban fantasy and this novel is very highly rated by readers, so it is surprising that I disliked it so much. My expectations for urban fantasy are not huge: well developed lore, engaging paranormal mystery and one or two sexy supernatural hunks to swoon over. Lately I have been reading just pretty much young adult books but I thought I give adult urban fantasy a go and I’m so glad I did. Moon Called was action packed, witty, suspenseful and addictive. When I finished it I wanted to run straight down to the bookstore and get the next one but unfortunately I had spent my weekly book budget.

I absolutely recommend this one! Full of Werewolves, Vampires, and Shapeshifters, OH MY, AND a totally brilliant butt-kicking heroine who just happens to have a coyote alter ego- I did not want to put it down once I got into it!
The heroine, Mercy Thompson, is a walker- a shapeshifter of Native American descent- who wears her coyote skin as comfortably as her human form. It's difficult to review this one without spoiling it for those who haven't read it yet, but I'll attempt it.

Re-read this and thought it was awesome. Maybe this is why people re-read books! Gets better each time :)
I love Mercy - she's tough, sarcastic, smart, but not infallible. There's a lot of wit and humor in the book. I didn't find any of the characters annoying. Great story, well explained world-building. Second time around, 5 stars!

This is the first novel in Briggs' urban fantasy series about the coyote shapeshifter, Mercy Thompson. I had never read Briggs before, but did like her story in the new Were anthology ("On the Prowl"), so I thought I would give this series a try. The writing is excellent, and I can see why everyone adores Mercy Thompson and suggests this series to me. Mercy is a spunky character, very intelligent, and intuitive enough to know when to remain silent, which is rather unusual for the he...more
This was a real disappontment :( after reading how everyone thought it was fantastic and was giving it five stars I got my hopes up. The story line itself had huge potential and there was also a slight love triangle going on with Sam and Adam but that is were the story was lacking.
Other than the slight hint that there was interest in Mercy from Adam and Sam there was no romantic input what so ever. I love all books to have a romantic sub plot and call me stereo typical but I think th...more

I like you Mercy Thompson.
I like you because you’re tough, but not invincible.
I like you because you’re brave, but not stupid.
I like you because you are caring, but nobody’s fool.
I like you because you make mistakes, but you don’t place the blame elsewhere.
I like you because you’re smart, but not a show-off.
I like you because you stand on your own among much more powerful creatures than you, but you know your limits.

I really enjoyed this book! I thought though that some parts were a bit dragged out; but I still enjoyed it very much. Don't judge this book by its cover! The cover is horrible, like some 80's metal band chick...it doesn't even "look" like her, in my mind. She's not that sleezy looking! LOL
I love Mercy (Mercedes). The supernatural world seems so normal in this series. Mercy is fun - with just enough spunk...and everyone keeps their hormones in check....sort of. LOL

I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this book. I really liked Mercy and enjoyed learning about Brigg's version of a werewolf pack. Maybe I do actually like urban fantasy....
I didn’t expect to like this book. It looked a little too similar to the Sookie Stackhouse series for my comfort. Plus how was I supposed to identify with a tattooed, tough-as-nails mechanic as a female lead? (Frankly her image on the cover is off-putting. She could beat me up!) But, once again, the prospect of meeting the author at an event next month made me read it.

This book is a fantastic start to an Urban Fantasy series by Patricia Briggs. The focus is on Mercedes Thompson, a walker/were-coyote. Although she is one of a kind, she finds herself surrounded by other members of the hidden supernatural world. Mercy was raised by werewolves, but left their community when she was only 16 years old. No matter what she does, Mercy seemed to keep getting pulled into the business of the werewolves, vampires and the fae.

Mercy Thompson is a car mechanic who runs her own garage almost single-handedly. Her life follows a fairly simple pattern: teaching the world's only friendly vampire, Stefan, how to fix his old bus; chatting to undercover cop Tony; and quietly baiting the meticulous Alpha of the local werewolf pack, Adam, by putting a battered old spare-parts VW beetle in the field between their homes where he can see it from his bedroom window and wince.

With Werewolves, shape-shifters, vamps, and more, I was thoroughly entertained! With the extensive variety of supernatural good and evil, the reader is never quite sure who Mercedes Thompson should trust! Vicious foes and dangerously beautiful friendships will keep you wanting for more! Mercy's story continues with "Blood Bound" and when I finished the last page of Moon Called, I instantly picked up, and started on the first page of book #2!
Mercy is a mechanic who happens to be a coyote shapeshifter. She lives beside the house of Alpha werewolf Adam and his daughter.Life is normal until she witnesses a brutal attack on a kid she is employing at the garage. Then Adam is badly injured in a wolf attack at his house and his daughter is missing.Mercy has to save Adam and help the pack find the missing girl.

This book was a nice change of pace from many of the overly romantic and sexed up books I have read lately--but don't get me wrong, I like those too.
Of all the characters in the book, I can't say that I disliked any of them. They were all well developed and interesting. Mercy seemed so real. I don’t really think it necessary for me to review Moon Called since all of you were the ones to convince me to read it in the first place to get me out of my Paranormal Pfunk.
First I will say I’m ashamed to admit I never read this series because I thought it sounded cheesy. A tough talking coyote mechanic?? Puhleeze. And the cover? I know this is a selling point to most but again I am soooo done with the badass girl with the tattoo book cover.
I’m sorry. I was wrong.

Moon Called is the first in the Mercy Thompson series. Mercy Thompson is a mechanic and shape shifter, she was raised by a pack of wolves and now lives next door to the handsome local Alpha wolf. She's friends with a fae and a vampire and tries to just live her life. Someone said it best when they said that Mercy Thompson is pretty much a normal person with normal friends except they all happen to be supernatural.

Mercy Thompson is a shapeshifter, a skinwalker. She can transform herself into a coyote at will. Mercy was raised by werewolves, though her kind of shifter magic is different.
She has connections with several factions of the supernatural community. She works as a mechanic at a shop that used to belong to the gremlin Zee. She lives next door to alpha werewolf Adam. And she has friendly relationships with a human cop and a vampire.

I enjoyed this book, the character is a tomboy and although the world isn't my total fave, I gobbled it up.
I liked this world that the author created. It's a world on the verge of discovering werewolves and vampires exist although it knows about the fae.
