There was once a time in which I was going through a particularly embarrassing vampire phase. I would read anything and everything to do with vampires, whether the content was good (Bram Stoker's Dracula), boring (L.J. Smith's Vampire Diaries), or so bad that its awfulness has now become the general consensus (Twilight).
...I also went through a particularly embarrassing manga phase around then.
I don't quite remember how I got my paws on Hellsing, but I do know that once I did, I was hooked. The...more

Hellsing is yet another tale about vampires and vampire hunters. And I know what you're thinking. Old news, right? Wrong. Hirano takes a whole new spin on the genre, creating an interesting story, woven with religion and the original Dracula stories. The Hellsing organization hunts down vampires and dispatches them with their ultimate weapon, another vampire under Sir Integra's control named Alucard. While on one mission to free a village of a vampire masquerading as a priest, a young police wom...more
Five stars for an incredible, tangible dark atmosphere full of ghouls, vampires, and gun-wielding Protestants and Catholics. Five stars for the artwork depicting it.
Honestly, though, I couldn't give a final rating for Hellsing above three stars because... well...

The plague of my high school grades. I read the first volume and then watched the original anime. After the character designs of the tv show, the art in the first volume made me nervous, but not nearly as much as I was dissatisfied by the ending of the tv anime. So when I realized that the manga followed a completely different storyline after the first book, I was devouring the chapters online. The art style is so unique for manga, so gritty and mecha while still being so sensual and raw. And no...more
I sort of wanted to give this more of a three and half star rating but, damn you goodreads, I don't have that option. I've seen the first two OVAs (aka "Hellsing Ultimate") and have been intrigued if not totally impressed. This first volume, which corresponds with the first OVA, does its job well enough and is pretty much the script of the OVA, which makes sense. There are few extra things going on but stuff that I can see being cut for an hour long anime.

I read the first eight volumes of this some time back—between one and four years ago—and the other day I noticed that volumes nine and ten were available, picked them up, and concluded the series.
I suppose I have a love-hate relationship with Hellsing, and for two very obvious reasons.
On the side of love are Sir Integra Wingate Hellsing, the titular heroine of the series, a no-nonsense, hard-as-nails woman whom singlehandedly runs an organization devoted to keeping England free of freaks and mo...more

I was introduced to "Hellsing" through the anime, of which I never managed to see more than four or five episodes. This first volume in the series seems to cover most of those episodes, but it's obvious that the writers of the anime took a few liberties with the script.
The concept that only virgins can become vampires was definitely not in the anime (and makes you wonder a bit about Alucard), or the bit about vampires only being able to turn those of the opposite gender. Can't say that I care fo...more

In the world of Hellsing lies a secret organization in the midst of England. Its purpose? To defend the country from things that go bump in the night. And at its core is a deadly weapon: Aluchard, an ancient vampire, who's very badass. And has quite good aim with a gun.
Hellsing doesn't really have a whole lotta originality going for it. Secret organization killing monsters? Vampire turned hunter? Lots of other sub-plots tucked in? I've seen it before. What Hellsing does have, however, is a bit...more

I've been wanting to read this manga for a while, since I first saw it on the shelf. I thought the connection of Hellsing (a family corporation that hunts vampires) to Van Helsing (the legendary vampire hunter) was a great idea. At first I wasn't sure about the gender of one of the characters (Integra - it's a girl), but overall I liked the character design. It's a weird concept, that a Japanese manga would be set in London and Europe. The Scottish (?) accent of one of the priests was a bit diff...more
Having enjoyed the anime for Hellsing, for the most part, I picked up the manga with a bit of excitement. I was ready to see how the manga was compared to the anime and, I hoped, that it would be better by a wide margin. I felt cheated when I finished.
It's not that the anime for Hellsing is any better, it's that I had many problems with the dialogue through the manga. The dialogue for Alexander Anderson was impossible to understand. I sat there for about fifteen minutes trying to decipher what h...more

I absolutely love Hellsing, a little less by the end than in the beginning, but still five stars worth. It is dark, gritty, gothic and just this side of insane. The baddies are bad, but the hero is even worse. Alucard is a psychotic, blood thirsty, vampire with a rye sense of morbid humor. He truly revels in the carnage he creates. Sir Integra Wingate, who by the way is female, is my favorite type of woman-strong, flinch-less, and in complete mastery of an overpowering mythical force, not to men...more
All right it's a classic of the Gothic Manga genre, and yes, over the series it has some lovely touches of humour and some of the most iconic characters in Manga history, but there's no real substance to Hellsing. You can't care about the characters because they're not characters, they're vehicles for some excellent plot design. Their character traits are limits almost entirely too their fighting style and Alucard himself (and come on, the names really not funny any more) is immortal and pretty...more
I loved the anime(s), so wanted to see what it is "really" about with the manga. I loved everything about this action/horror/supernatural manga, other than Alexander Anderson's Scottish brogue as rendered by the translator, which was confusing and annoying: "Tha' on its laine widna' be enough tae kill yer kaind thoo." Seriously? This really slowed down the fast pace of the fight scenes as I paused and was like "WTF did he just say?" Rendering dialect in misspelled English words is a bad idea. An...more
I don't like anime but this one is fairly ok. I really only tolerate the art because I enjoy the story. This is the first manga I've ever read. I've watched the entire movie series of Hellsing and my boyfriend had the manga lying around so I decided to read it. Took a little getting used to because it is obviously set up in the Japanese book style. When it comes to the style of Hellsing, I find it a little better then others I've seen, but I still don't find it that good. Pretty much the only re...more
So I finally bit the bullet and decided to give manga a shot. I'd never been interested before, though I knew people who were, and the cost is a bit much for me. However, finding them at the library is quite a nice way to give things a shot.
Hellsing drew me in and I liked quite a bit about it. The dynamic between Allucard and 'Police Girl', as he calls her, is interesting and I enjoy the basic idea behind it. The priest's accent was a bit jarring and hard to get at times. Reading aloud helped a...more

The manga follows the secret Hellsing Organization, also known as the Royal Order of Protestant Knights, as they combat ghouls, vampires, and other supernatural forces. Their main weapon? Alucard, a vampire sworn to protect Sir Intergal Hellsing since she took over as head of the family.
The plotline of this volume follows fairly close to the anime (though I hear it goes differently later on). There isn't a whole lot in the way of dialogue, and some of what is there has an awkward feel to it, th...more

I do not know why it took me TWO DAYS! to finish this manga. The concept, plot and characters are great. Hellsing is an british organization who hunts vampires, ghouls, etc. Their best agent is Alucard, who is also a vampire, but not in the traditional way. The Chief is a woman, Integra, who was the one who practically saved Alucard in the past... or at least, brought him to life again.
While Alucard was hunting some vampires, he met a virgin, Victoria, and to saave her, he had to turn her into a...more

The opening chapter in this manga series introduces us to the mysterious vampire Alucard, his eventual protege Seras Victoria, and his leader Integra Hellsing. While starting strong and clean, the series begins to get bogged down in the darks and shadows of the black-and-white work. The opening books and introduction of nemesis Alexander Anderson bear intrigue, but get mired in a WWII revenge scheme orchestrated by the Major. A unique exploration of creatures of the night.

Hellsing was an interesting manga for me as I always enjoy the whole vampire hunter angle. I also thought it was interesting that Hellsing isn’t the actual person doing the hunting, but the name of the agency run by Protestants. Then throw in the religious differences and the fact that the Catholic Vatican has their own agency as well it made for a real interesting story.

Basically, it's 'Hellboy' done as manga and replacing Hellboy with a really bad ass vampire.
Very dark, violent and creepy, but at the same time very clever, and funny.
The relationship between Alucard and his protege is interesting, and I love the over top feuding between the two secret religious groups.
Great visual style to this manga that has quickly become one of my favorites.

Funny, dark, serious action. Everything you could want from a manga about fighting the undead with the ultimate weapon Alucard.
As a note I only picked up reading this because I had seen the anime version some years back. Still prefer the anime version, but I do enjoy how Alucard is a bit more "silly" in the manga (not over the top LOL though)

The artwork in Hellsing is excellent and the pacing is also very well done. In spite of my strong religious beliefs I didn't find the satirical nature of its plot offensive, on the contrary I thought it rather humorous. I remember watching the anime and enjoying it, however, if I recall correctly, there was a decent amount of fan-service (of which I am not a fan). Hopefully the following volumes can deliver much of the same which I enjoyed in this initial collection, including the absence of pro...more
I scooped up the start of the Hellsing series at the exuberant recommendation of a teen patron. And it's pretty darn good. I think the only reason I haven't scored it higher is because I'm not a huge fan of the way this mangaka draws some of the characters (e.g., the women all look like men). But Alucard - the vampire - is damn cool :)
I thought Hellsing was a lot of fun. It was very violent and gory, but in a totally over-the-top "comic book" sort of way - many heads sliced in half and then licked by vampires, for example. The bickering between the Protestant organization (Hellsing) and their Catholic counterpart is pretty funny too. Definitely a fun read.
He's got some really bitchin' shoulder pads! Bizarre, fun manga starring Celes Victoria, a virgin girl who is turned into a vampire by Alucard (Dracula in reverse). Great art and storyline as the mastah and his fledgling chase after bloodsuckers in the name of Integral, Alucard's master. STAND YOUR GROUND, POLICEWOMAN!!
THis was defferent series than what I usually read. I like the rather retro feel to it. I will admit it can be a bit unnerving at points but I've seen worse. I think the translation is kinda' werid and that there are parts that just don't fit but over all the originality of the story is really great.

Kohta Hirano (平野 耕太 Hirano Kōta) is a Japanese mangaka most famous for his manga Hellsing. Starting his career first as a mangaka's assistant (self-described as "horrible" and "lazy" in said assistant position), and later an H manga artist, he went on to enjoy somewhat limited success with other relatively unknown manga titles such as Angel Dust, Coyote, Gun Mania and Hi-Tension.
