Lawyer Jace Scholte returns to the small town he grew up in to do some work for his mentor, Carson MacGregor, and runs into his college sweetheart and almost-fiancee, Dorothea (Dodie) Westervelt. Dodie dropped out of everyone’s life six years ago without explanation. Her personality has changed: she’s no longer outgoing or friendly but sullen and sad. When Dodie describes herself as feeling “violated” and “unclean” it’s not hard to connect the dots and see why she’s changed; she was raped.

This is a very strong story, and one that is really touchy when it comes
to Dodie who left town 6 years ago. She was happy and bubbly. She left town
and returned a different person, one of the total opposite in her behavior.
She has a secret that explains it. Keeps everyone of her family and others
in suspense as to why she changed for the worse. Really an inspiration to read, and
may help others that are going through her situation.
Dodie and Jace were in love, which makes Dodie's disappearing act all the more baffling. Fast-forward six years, they're back in town together and forced to work together on a fundraiser for a new crisis center. Jace knows he's never gotten over Dodie and he wants to understand what happened, but Dodie's still not talking. She's afraid if Jace knows the real reason she fled, he won't be able to handle it or, worse, he won't believe her. The more time they spend together, the more she wishes she ...more

This book deals with a pretty tough issue. I don't want to give anything away, but I really felt sorry for the main character Dodie. I didn't agree with the way she handled things in the story, but the character development in this book is excellent. I really enjoyed the other main character Jace. He never gives up on Dodie and it makes for a sweet story :)
