Day by Day Armageddon is a zombie survival story written from the point of view of one character, through the writing in his journal. Each section is dated just like a diary would be and then a description of the days events. Through his journal the story of the world coming to an end is related while the writer tries to survive.

This book presents itself as a zombie story presented in journal entry form. The problem, however, was that the journal entries didn't always feel like journal entries, but rather the author just pushing the plot forward. And while the book was definately interesting it never pushed very hard to be anything more than interesting. I know I shouldn't really be asking too much of a zombie novel, but plot progession seemed rather convient and predictable.

Ok. Zombie come and zombies go. But as raw as it is...I LOVED this book! It's a diary format tale of a military guy stuck in the burbs of the living dead. What a guilty pleasure. Or maybe it's the voyeuristic me dancing behind the overturned car with a high-powered rifle and only enough SPAM to last me another two days!

Please forgive me ahead of time for this long winded review. I am no scholar and please keep in mind that these are just opinions. Take what I have to say with a grain of saccharin.
I found this book by chance in an online forum and headed to Google Books to check out the preview there. The first 50 pages were great! Where Kim Paffenroth's recent release Dying to Live was to be considered the philosopher's guide to existence after a zombie invasion, J. L. Bourne's novel Day by Day Armageddon is everyday man's field guide to survival. With the gritty, no-nonsense voice of a young Naval officer, Bourne details the evolution of an outbreak of a virus that spreads rapidly from China to America, turning everyone in its path into hordes of mindless, hungry undead. Trapped in his home in San Antonio, Texas the m...more

An entertaining, quick read.
The author presents a solid zombie story that moves along quickly. The pace is sometimes slower, sometimes outright frenetic--which is to be expected in a zombie tale.
That being said, it has some serious faults. The author lacks significant writing ability. This is not to say that he cannot craft a sentence, or that it was a tough read, simply that the overall story mapping just wasn't there. The last significant events in the book seem to come out of nowh...more

This was a pretty good zombie/apocalyptic read and somewhat innovative in that it was written in the style of a journal (hence 'day by day')however, it really did come across as an amateur read in places.
For instance, the writer goes into vast detail on certain guns and ammo types unnecessarily, which to me betrays the fact that he is probably a gun enthusiast that wants to show off his knowledge. Again, it comes off as kind of pointless and amateur to talk to the reader about different cal...more

I have read this book not only when it first was released through Lulu, (a self publishing company and not an actual publisher), but also when it could be found online beyond just the first chapter. The story in and of itself is not bad. Its fast paced and contains all of the elements of George Romero's classic zombies. The military details are interesting, and to be expected being that John Bourne has a naval background.

My husband is a zombie fan, so he got me started on this, first by sending me the URL http://www.tacticalunderground... - which has about the first quarter of the book posted as a blog. He ordered & read the book, and then I gave it a whirl.

This was an awesome quick read. I think you need to either like zombies, end of the world survival stories, and probably be a little anal to really love this one, since much of it is planning and executing those plans for a survivor from a zombie outbreak. It's written as journal entries and is very engaging, and such a fast read that I'd even recommend it to the non-zombie crowd. =)

A Zombie novel in the form of the diary of a lone survivor. The narrative is well-paced and the entries are short enough that you'll want to keep going ("Just one more!"). I gave it 3 stars however, because it felt like a fairly amateurish effort, which it actually is (author's first book). The main character is good, but not particularly memorable. There were 1 or 2 decent secondary characters, and the action is well written. Basically, if you're a zombie fan...read it, you'll en...more

Of all the zombie novels out there, this may be one of my favorites. It's odd, yeah, because there's not a whole lot of gore and normally I think I'm more fond of the gore than none-gore... but there you have it! There are grammatical mistakes galore, especially as the book goes on, but it actually kind of lends a very real feel to it, a regular guy lost in the morass of post-zombie world. I'm quite fond of the regular guy surviving stories. Well, actually, I'd be really fond if it...more

I have to say, i love a good novel about zombies, vampires and other creatures. this one in particular talks about a world dominated by zombies. though many movies and novels i have seem about zombies, they focus so much on the gore and deaths they forget to realize character development and other aspects of a great story. this novel keeps that in tact as it shows great character development by the naval officer. the fact that it was a diary, it zoomed in on the issues of living in a world domin...more

I didn't really like the layout of the book. Journal entries for this story doesn't go over well. I won't give away the ending, but it sucked.
I felt like I was reading a book written by a high schooler- nah, some high schoolers can write better novels than this. This isn't because of his grammatical or spelling errors, it was just a simple read. I think I was expecting too much out of this book.
It started out ok, but started going downhill toward the beginning of the book (when he got ...more

The only problem I has with this book is there were too many coincidences. Not that I'm an expert on the end of the world--but the main character seems to be a built-in armageddon commando--a Navy pilot already running solar power with all his weapons ready at his disposal that suddenly wants to take up journal writing?
And it's way too short. Which is to say, I'm glad there's a sequel coming.

When I initially looked up this book there were a lot of bad reviews on Amazon concerning the grammar and spelling. To those people: IT'S A FUCKING DIARY!
This is written as though a young man is writing a daily journal as the horrific events unfold. This is a great book and a must-read for zombie/apocalypse fans. AND it ends with a sequel in mind!

I accidentally read this in a single day. This was my first foray into the Zombie Horror book genre, I thoroughly enjoyed it. I cannot wait for the sequel.
There were a number of typographical errors. I cannot decide whether they were overlooked or intentional to remind us that we were essentially reading a survivor's diary.

This is a terse, tense journal of a military man surviving through the first several months after the "reanimation". I found myself absorbed in the details of the equipment, weapons, and tactical maneuvers used by the characters trying to survive in a world of zombies! Glad to see there's a sequel, since this one felt kind of short.

I started this Sunday night (late) and finished it at 4:30AM. I had to call out of work on Monday to get some sleep. I loved this, it snuck up on me and then it was like I was in it and it was happening to me as well. The diary format was perfect, I look forward to more from the author!
