The last book I needed to finish the Further Tales Adventure series, The Thief and the Beanstalk takes the story that we all know and love, Jack and the Beanstalk, and makes a new, fresh action-adventure book revovling around that story. The story starts off with a theif named Nick. He ends up joining another group of thieves who are going to steal from a rich old man. That old man is Jack, from the original tale. Jack ends up showing Nick the beans used to grow the beanstalk. Nick takes them, g...more

This book is cool. I love how Nick becomes a hero. Finch is a greedy man and his gang is no better. Nick is just an orphan. When Nick joins Finch's gang he broke into Jack's mansion to steal Jack's fortune. I love the ending it is so awesome. A too read for all adventure/fantasy lovers. I recommend it to young readers around 10 years old. A little violent but totally appropriate for kids. I loved it.

This "Jack and the Beanstalk" sequel-ish book was entertaining, but certainly intended for a "young readers" audience (back of the book says 9-12). The story was straight forward, the characters pretty basic, and some of the plot devices felt a little stiff...But if you put the book-critic mentality behind you for a while, the book is enjoyable.

(I will be honest and say that the reason I picked this book up in a thrift store is because it was obviously about two of my favorite book things: reto...more

The Thief and the Beanstalk is about a boy Nick, who joins a ruthless gang to invade Jack's castle. Nick is lonely and an orphan and has no choice but to join the gang. The setting is outside Jacks castle and on the top of the beanstalk. Nicks external conflict is having to deal with the ruthless gang who forces him to do terrible stuff. The internal problem is choosing to invade the castle and steal from the castle or to run away from the ruthless gang which is unlikely.

During the book, I made...more

Beginning with action, P. W. Catanese draws the reader into a distant sequel to the classic tale "Jack and the Beanstalk." In it, the orphaned thief Nick joins up with a group of thus who would like to make Old Man Jack's fortune their own. But what Nick gains from Jack's mansion is not gold but truth and beans.

What follows is a story as rich as the long-dead giant, as magnificent as Gnasher's machines, and as powerful as the beanstalk rushing towards its sky. Hopes and crushed and renewed as Ni...more

this is an amazing book! it is so descriptive and very exciciting although i would not want to be in nicks place he is like jack from jack in the beanstalk. jacks story is being once more repeated. accept nick is an orphan he dose not have a mother nor a father. nick goes everywhere to find a place to sleep he has a prettty harsh live.until he joins a gang his live completly changes.that gang wants to steel from jack but jack caught nick and he knows how it is to be poor so he gives him the magi...more

An entertaining story with tantalizing hints of so much more beyond the edges...

As usual, this author draws from a fairy tale but continues it with original material, so there's no telling how the adventure will end!

This book includes some food for thought along with the action, and might make for good discussion material with your teen or child.

More of the creative monsters I'm coming to associate with P.W. Catanese populate this book. Some of them are a little scary and are used in situations...more

A long, long, time ago, a boy climbed up a beanstalk and climbed back down a thief. Many years later, a thief climbs up a beanstalk. Who knows who he will become when he climbs back down?

In this tale, Jack is a rich old man, haunted by depression and remorse for what he did in the land of the giants. Then along comes another small boy with nothing to lose. There just happens to be some magic beans left from the original plant. Perhaps the old wrongs can be righted after all.

A richly imagined,...more

I think everyone have heard of the fictional story "jack and the beanstalk," but does everyone know the tale The thief and the beanstalk? They are similar with beanstalks and giants and riches. The main character Nick joins a gang who is planning to rob a old man named Jack. Legend says that this so called Jack climbed up this magical beanstalk and he came back down full of riches. Nobody nows how he got the wealth...more

I picked up this book a couple of years ago because it was recommended to me by one of my teachers when i was struggling to find a book to read. I had heard about the book before but had never tried to read it and now that i have read it i wish i hadn't. At first it kinda seemed like a good book but as i read more i started noticing that the author was just making stuff up to fill pages. by the end of the book, i was very disappointed and regretted wasting my time.

Close to five stars but was a little fuzzy in a few areas, otherwise, a great read I'm anxious to share with my students. Would be a great read aloud, unless someone in the class is squeamish about spiders. This was a strong page-turner for me with a very satisfying ending. Who was the man who helped Nick when he arrived on the cloud? Why was Nick given the Strange tingly power? Believable description of how the beanstalk sucked dry all the moisture to feed its massive size - well done!

Jack climbed his beanstalk years ago -- now he is old, left with treasure, a story that few believe, regrets, and some magic beans. When a little thief comes to his fortress-like home to steal his treasure, Jack gives him the beans, sending him on his own adventure.

This was a fairly decent re-imagining of Jack and the Beanstalk -- more of a what happened next than a retelling.

the thief and the beanstalk is about a kid named Nick who was stealing form an old man.the old man came with a pitch fork and he stab hem with it. the kid past out and then he woke up with pain in is chest. he called for help and he toke the pitch fork out his chest.you have to find the rest by your self I hope you like the book when you finish reading them by.:)

Wow! When I put this book down, I wanted to immediately climb back up the beanstalk and get lost in this world again. I loved the turn this story took and I loved revisiting my old friend Jack and looking inside his story while a new one was being weaved around me. This author has truly breathed life back into an old favorite tale!

A fun tale of what happened once Jack from the original beanstalk had become an old man. I would have given it 4 stars but the spiders with human heads were a little much for me. The story line was entertaining other than that. A nice read, probably for age 9-12 as suggested.

I really enjoyed this tale of a young orphan who returns up the beanstalk. There are some gross and scary parts, but after all, what do you expect from a story with man-eating giants in it? I'd like to add this to my collection of fairy-tale alternatives.

This was action packed and very fun to read. I have read 3 books by this author and I have loved them. I can't wait to read them with my son! They are good "boy" books. Male main character(12 yo.), not a lot of mushy stuff, lots of action... enjoy!
Theo
i liked it. it was very well written, and i like how the author took the jack and the beanstalk plot and extended it. I liked the characters in it and how the each fit in well. over all it was a really well written book with a great plot.

My main issue with this is that it was blah. You're reading and it's okay, little boring, loose on character development, etc but then, then you get a tiny bit of Jack's actual story and that's when you start realizing that, while it's not the most compelling retelling on Jack's part, you really would have preferred a full on retelling from his POV while his story was taking place. Not Nick, years later when history sorta repeats itself. And, yes, I'm also aware that the "Further Tales Adventure...more

This is sort of like a sequel to the child hood story "Jack and the Beanstalk". A poor boy named nick starts out as a greedy kid and embarks on an adventure that turns him into a kind and heroic boy.

What a fabulous look on the story of Jack and the Beanstalk afterwards! This is a great chapter book read aloud if you have a 10-11 year old who loves adventure. A big hit in our house!!

I could not get into this story. It's my favorite genre, but I couldn't care less about the main character Nick, for some reason. I got about halfway and gave up.

Another fairy tale retold, some of my favorite stories :) Ever wondered what happned after Jack came down the beanstalk? Years later?

A great little fairy tale! Well-written, and with good characters. A little too much gross stuff for my taste, but boys would love it.

Ever since I read the first Sisters Grimm I have been looking for books based on fairy tales. This one was recommended by our school librarian. I love the description in this book! Definitely worth reading.
