This old school historical romance was first published in 1977. It was recently reissued on Amazon's Kindle. Dark at times, it is about the struggle of a young heiress who had lost everything. Or did she?

Kate Warrender had some problems. Her father committed suicide after an evening of gambling, her brother is presumed dead, and her mother and her were left with her family's estate which was to be entailed. So what is a twenty-year-old woman suppose to do? Dress up like a man, of course.

A suspenseful romance based in England in 1804. Mrs. Warrender and her daughter make way for the despised American heir of their estate after son and brother Chris dies. They become housekeeper and governess for a neighbor's family.

Kate Warrender masquerades as her cousin Kit so that she can ride at night to relieve her distress over her new circumstances. Unfortunately the Luddites are planning insurrections in the area and Kit becomes caught up in the turmoil.

Exciting historical fiction set in Napoleon's time. Features smugglers and Luddite rebellions, and a light romance. Clever plotting with a good ending, albeit rather predictable.

Jane Aiken Hodge was born in the USA, brought up in the UK and read English at Oxford. She received a master's degree from Radcliffe College, Harvard University.

Before her books became her living she worked as a civil servant, journalist, publishers' reader and a reviewer.

She has written lives of Jane Austen and Georgette Heyer as well as a book about women in the Regency period, PASSION AND PRINC
