Not Without Hope
A former college football star shares the harrowing story of the headline-making boating accident that left three of his friends dead, including two NFL players, a tragedy that he was only able to survive by clinging to the boat's propeller as he bobbed in the chilly waters of the Atlantic.

Wow. I started this book on a whim and I could not put it down. I spent the majority of my Sunday reading this book and in complete disbelief that Nick Schuyler survived the elements, heartbreak and physical fatigue to tell his story. I found myself tearing up as he described his last moments with his friends, wincing as he described his pain from staying in the same position for hours on end, wishing his story had a different ending. But his story doesn't have a different ending- four friends,...more
I saw Nick interview with Oprah a year ago? I meant to get the book but with 2 small chidlren time to read is rare. However, I finally bought a copy on my kindle and read it. Honestly it did not take
long to read as I found myself flipping past page after page as I became SICK and TIRED of listening to this man talk about himself, his body, how good of shape he was in, his work outs..etc..etc.
To be honest, the actual accounts of what happened haunt me. I think the majority of the book is a lie a...more

When individuals fall into the ocean--particularly a stormy ocean-- they are at risk of swallowing large amounts of seawater. The saltwater can lead to a poisonous imbalance in the blood, leaching of water from cells, and eventually to delirium, seizures, heart attack, and ultimately, to death from dehydration.
A second grave danger is hypothermia, which comes about when body temperature drops below 95 degrees. In this condition, blood vessels to the extremities constrict, rerouting blood to the...more

This book tells the story of 4 men who go on a guy's fishing trip. One of the men was getting ready to leave for NFL training camp (2 were on NFL teams and all had at least played in college) and this was going to be their last time together for the foreseeable future. What should have been a great day of relaxation turns into 2 days of terror after a series of bad luck and bad decision making ends in their boat being overturned 70 miles off the coast of Florida in the Gulf of Mexico. Four men l...more
Wow! A simple error can cost you your life. I thought a lot about this book after I read it. It explained a lot of things I didn't understand (Like how DID they flip?) and cleared up a lot of rumors (Like Marquis Cooper and Corey Smith took off their life vests and swam away.) about what happened to each of them.
It is amazing what happens to the mind and body when exposed to those kinds of elements.
I am sorry for the families of Marquis Cooper, Corey Smith and Will Bleakley, but I am glad that a...more

You may recall the news story last year. Two NFL football players went on a boating trip with friends and didn't come back when expected. Ultimately, of the four friends on that trip, only one returned alive. This is his true story of what happened on that trip.
This is a story that, very understandably, still affects the author very deeply. At times, he writes with the almost clinical detachment of someone still in shock. Elsewhere, he seems almost desperate for the reader to really understand w...more

This was a GoodReads Giveaway for me...and in a way I am sort of glad I didn't pay bookstore/kindle prices for it.
You can't help but feel horrible & proud at the same time for Nick for the ordeal he and his friends went thru. Yet at the same time the book is just an overwhelming emotional cleansing for the author. There isn't enough information to really write a book with so the story tends to be extremely repeaticious.

Prompt # 3:
I think this book has contributed to my personal enlightenment. I am only 80 some pages into this book but it has made me think about my own life. As the main character, Nick, Schuyler, floats aimlessly, each second bringing him closer to his death, he talks about his life. He muses about the events that he would’ve changed, regretted, and things he would like to have done. He also talks about the bond between his family and the support he received for each of them. This made me star...more

I read this account of the survivor's harrowing and hellish journey on a fishing trip that had gone horribly wrong. It is very well written and at times, I felt I was there suffering along with him. It may be irritating since I read this on the way to vacation, and it was far from suffering the body break down from hythermia and starvation.

This book was amazing. Where was I last year when this was going on? Why don't I remember this? I should watch more CNN and less A&E. That's for sure.

Its tragic. Tragic that the author had to tell his story for others. Tragic that people make up lies, or spread rumors about things they know nothing about. Tragic that just because these men were in the public eye people have to accuse drinking and fighting and even murder as part of what was honestly a tragedy. Its tragic that such a simple false move had to take the lives of 3 friends and forever scar and haunt their one surviving buddy.

I finished reading this book a while ago and I haven't had much time to review and tell how I felt about this story. I can say that it really touched my heart. As I was reading I felt my eyes tear up many times. It is a true story of determination and the will to not give up. Everytime I...more

You probably saw on the news a few years back about how 4 friends went out one morning for a day long fishing trip on one of the friends boat. all 4 friends were athletes through high school and college, some even in the NFL. This book is the story of one friend, Nick's story of how he was the only one to come out of the tremendous disaster but none of his friends, was it his courage and strength? Or the thought of how his family would react? I thought it was an over all good book about the cour...more

"Not Without Hope" is the personal account of Nick Schuyler, a personal trainer who lives in Florida, and the haunting experience of losing friends while floating adrift in the Gulf of Mexico.
I remember hearing about this story on ESPN because two of the people involved in the incident were professional football players. The story was broadcast all over the news, and many believed that the four people aboard had been lost at sea. Miraculously, one man survived. "Not W...more

I gave my book 5 stars because it is about trying to survive and it's about a real life story. I really liked this book because it is about real football players out in sea trying to survive with crashing waves and extreme currents. I cant really relate to them because i have never been in that kind of situation and because i dont play football or ever been to college. My favorite person in the story is Nick. When him and his friends were all stuck out in sea he would always try and keep them ca...more
I think this book was great. It's interesting to know the media side of the story and then hear what actually happened while we were watching it unfold on CNN. I know Nick Schuyler has come under criticism from some family members of the the other guys but this book is part of his healing process. He felt the need to clear up misconceptions that the media has purported and tell the world how courageous all four of them were.

The book is good. It is about four guys that go on a fishing trip. Two NFL players, a fitness instructor, and a college basketball player. It is a true story with real players and people. They have an accident while fishing and are stranded in the coldest water ever waiting to be rescued. Only one comes out alive. It's an upsetting story but it's true. I like the book is written. I would recommend this especially to people that like and are interested in them. He speaks a lot about them in the b...more

I did not know what to expect when I was given this book but remembered the headlines last year when this tragedy occurred and was curious. It is related though the words of the lone survivor. It is his recollection of what actually happened as four young men fought for survival after their fishing boat capsized miles off shore in rough and untenable weather conditions. Being football players all were heavily into health and strength issues, working out and excelling in their physical prowess. W...more
While I definitely feel for the families involved in this tragedy - I did not like this book at all. The book was poorly written and the author (Nick Schuyler) came across as somewhat concieted and shallow. For example: he's just lost 3 friends and looks down at his ab muscles after he's been rescued and thinks to himself - "damn, pretty good" and goes on to say how "shredded" he looked! Ugh - he completely turned me off. I understand that he is young and fitness obsessed but there's a point whe...more
This book needed a good, compassionate editor. I don't recall the actual event as reported in the news when it happened but the story itself is a compelling read. The details of the struggle to survive this catastrophe are chilling but there is simply too much repetition. I was very frustrated by the fact that this accident could have been avoided if these guys had been a little better educated before they took the boat out. I also think it highlights something I've tried to warn my children abo...more
This was an interesting account of what sheer detemination can achieve in the face of very short odds. Nick Schuyler spent 43 hours clinging to the hull of his friend's uptuned boat off the coast of Florida in very high seas. His three friends NFL players, Marquis Cooper and Corey Smith along with Nick's best friend Will Bleakley, slowly sucummbed to hypothermia after a stupid accident on a fishing trip caused Marquis's boat to capsize. It was sheer determination to save his mother the anguish o...more
Normally I do not read non-fiction, preferring fiction with a historical basis. But, as a huge sports fan, this book caught my interest.
While the writing is not anything special, the story and the emotions put into it are very special. Nick Schuyler is the one survivor from the tragic boating accident that claimed the lives of two NFL players and his best friend. His insight into how he survived in the Gulf for so long is frightening and intriguing at the same time.

I would recommend this book to everyone because it is very inspiring because it teaches us that we need to take precausions for everything we do, like fishing. This book is a very sad and tragic book. This book waas written by Nick Schuyler who went on a fishing trip with of his friends but they made a mistake and they ended up tipping the boat they had no way to call for help. Two days after they tipped the boat the Florida Coast Gaurd came but they only returned with Nick. This book is very in...more
I gave this book 3 stars, not because it wasn't a good & tragic story, but because I didn't feel like it was very well written. Such a horrible tragedy over such a small misjudgment! I can't imagine going through what Nick Schuyler went through, having his friends literally dying in his arms. I would imagine that it was at times hard to want to go on, himself. Thank the Lord for his not wanting his mom to have to attend his funeral & the strength that gave him. My heart goes out to the f...more
This book is a case where the enormity of the story overshadowed the less-than-stellar writing. Schuyler certainly is not a writer by trade; that is obvious from his use of subpar vocabulary (I lost count of how many times he uses the word "ass" and the inclusion of the word "chode" took me back to, say, 8th grade). Schuyler comes off as a meathead bodybuilder (like, after his three friends have died, two of whom died in his arms, he looks at his emaciated body and calls it "shredded"), but the...more
Audiobook Version:
Aside from the fact that whoever the narrator is, he seems to be on speed, the tone of this book lacks emotion. That being said, this was a sometimes fairly intense account of the deaths of three of four stupid men.
This is the story of 4 football players obviously in mint physical condition, who go out on a fishing boat unprepared in the Gulf waters and meet up with disaster. Once the boat capsizes because of their lack of knowledge about how to operate a boat, the story is no...more

This book was a great book, I cried. I would recommend this book to people who like unpredictable books. IT goes like this" On February 28, 2009 four friends... excited as little kids, headed out on a fishing trip in Clearwater, Florida. The fact that all four young men were exceptionally physically fit makes the tragedy at sea that occurred hours later even more shocking to their loved ones, and the world at large. The four men were Nick Schuyler a physical trainer, Will Bleakley a former colle...more
Finished it, feeling horrible for Nick after all he had gone through, for one, and then for the backlash, resentment, accusations, and questions family, friends and strangers all had for him. Bad enough he went through it, then those sore feelings of guilt and sorrow set in. I'm sure it will take a whole other lifetime to get over his fear. This reminded me of Eric LeMarque's story of survival. All four of them were tested, and God always wins. Some small things don't really matter once you've...more

I picked this up because the summer reading committee at the local high school is considering this title for the final list. And, to be honest, my favorite nonfiction stories are about survival at sea. And because I vaguely remember hearing about this story as the events unfolded back in 2009, but never anything after that.
The story itself was pretty interesting. Four friends head out for a day of fishing and because of a series of mi...more
