I thought this book was going to be like many of my grandmother's old books: a cheesy romance novel from the first half of the last century. They're always amusing books because the"romance" part is so mild compared to today's books, and the proper behavior of "ladies" is so hilarious by our standards (a lot of nastiness couched in polite language).
But while this book had the romance thing going on, it also was quite a history lesson! I spent all day finishing the 2nd half ...more

Are you serious? This is horrible, horrible, horrible! This book pretty much lost me when they helped their friend escape from the hotel in New Orleans. Let me suspend any intelligence I might have and just believe that their plan might have worked. And on the trail to what was it - Arizona?? No Indian attacks along the way? No problems dealing with, hmmmm, womanly issues on the trail? She doesn't get pregnant? It was UNrealistic every step of the incredibly long way. I gave up before G...more

This is the story of just out of finishing school Garnet, who meets and falls in love with Oliver Hale while he's visiting New York from California. Garnet has an adventurous spirit that Oliver indulges and they're off to California via the Jubilee Trail. Along the way they meet up with Florinda, the "bad" woman with a heart of gold and Garnet and Florinda become great friends, and support each other during the good and bad times as they cross the country and come to California before ...more

I'm into westerns right now. After finishing "These is My Words" I found this book mentioned on some of the reviews but I couldn't find it at the library so I decided to wait. Then my friend Susie had this book on her profile under her favorite books. I emailed her about it and she said it was a long lost book she remembered reading years ago and hasn't seen a copy since. Similar statements were made on Amazon, but the reviewers said they loved it even more after they rediscovered ...more

I read this book as a young child, age nine or so, borrowed from my Aunt Honey. I absolutely totally loved it, the history of the old southwest, Los Angeles, California, and a romance and a little racy for a nine year old....it was heaven. I think I've read it 4 or 5 times, and just picked it up again after many years. While I definitely wouldn't call if great literature, I do have to say, I think it had a great impact on my life, an adventure seeking young woman, traveling to other countries...more

It is a long time since I have reread this book but what I remember best about it is how heroine Garnet Cameron, a young woman from NY, is romantically swept off her feet by a man eager to make his fortune in 19th century California. Alas, both her young husband and the exhausting trail to California are not what Garnet expects but she is determined to carry on despite hardships along the way. In this effort, she is helped by an unexpected friend she makes on the trail, a showgirl named Florind...more

I read this in 1954 but it was too racy to give a book report on. Mom always allowed access to the family bookshelves.

I read this several years ago. It is about a young woman who left New York City and traveled west to California on a wagon train. She fell in love and got married and became a widow. She remarried and lived happily ever after.
It was written by Qwen Bristow and recommended to me by a Provo City librian. But Qwen writes with a formula and when you read on story. They all read alike. I know review was a little boring. But her stories are not boring. I enjoy them all.

I have a hard time with the starring system because there are so many ways I enjoy a book. Some books are beautifully written, some have compelling themes, others have lovable characters, etc. Some books find me at the just the right (or wrong) time.

I think I would've enjoyed this book more if it hadn't been compared so closely to These is My Words, which is one of my all-time favorite books. However, I enjoyed the story and the characters.

I enjoyed the history of this book and the story was ok. What I liked most about this book was that the girl was experiencing new places and going through the same emotions that I am because of living in a new and foreign place. It was a lot longer than I thought it needed to be and a cookie cutter story of Calico Palace just with a different history behind it.

I have fond memories of reading Gwen Bristow's books when I was in highschool. Most of them are out of print, but Jubilee Trail is now available in paperback. I hope they continue to reprint her others. Great historical fiction with well developed characters. My other favorites by her are Celia Garth and Plantation Trilogy.

Historical/romantic fiction about a woman who travels from New York to California, in the time just before California becomes a state. There is a lot of great historical information about what happened in California at the time, and about the kind of people who lived and worked there. Also, there is romance and drama and kissing.

I have finished Jubilee Trail but will not be posting a review until the other ladies in my book club have read it.
I will say this though- the library's physical copy of the book is disgusting. The cover was sticky and gross feeling. The pages were all covered in various stains. The ick factor was super high.

recommends it for: anyone
This is about a Victorian young woman in the east, bored with the direction of her life. She finally meets someone interesting, an educator trader, preparing his next load for unknown California. They marry. This is here adventure--pre Gold Rush.
We do what we have to do.
Nothing inappropriate

I've read this book twice. The second time I skipped a lot of the historical parts because they are long and unneccessary to the story. However, I like the main character and picturing life back then is intriguing to me. I still prefer These is My Words for that part of history.

I read my mother's copy of this when maybe 10 or 12. It was one of her favorites and became one of mine. We both re-read it every few years and discussed and quoted our favorite character ("Hell for Breakfast!"). I still love this book. It is a great Early California pioneer story.

Another by one of my favorite authors. About the Santa Fe trail and it's hardships. Ends just before Calico Palace begins. They are not part of a series. History of Los Angeles and California while in Mexico's posession.

I really loved These Is My Words (by Nancy Turner) and the other books in that series--and I loved this just as much. Although the writing and perspective are different, it has a similar feel and appeal.

A great book , long-which I happen to love, otherwise the story is over too quickly, I have a thing for frontier men I think! or Alaskan Bushmen, same thing!
