Rating: 6/10
PROS:
- Descriptions that incorporate Calvin’s artistic way of seeing the world: people, settings, and even intangible events are described as manifestations of color, outlines, light and shadow, etc.
- Interesting 1) character in Matthew and 2) plot element as it relates to Matthew.
CONS:
- The oddity in Matthew’s personality is never explained terribly well. It’s not something he was born with, yet the reason he...more

Vivien Dean and Pepper Espinoza published a series of three books titled Calling of Souls. The common thread for this series? Priests. I read No Fear in Love by Jamie Craig (Vivien and Pepper's co-authoring pen name) and If All The Sand Were Pearl by Pepper Espinoza upon their release. I enjoyed both of those books tremendously. That's why I find it hard to explain why the third book in the series languished in my TBR pile. All I can say is that the blurb just wasn't driving me to pick...more

I appreciated in the past Vivien Dean's originality, when she gave a twist on an unusual vampire romance. Now she creates another terrific (or horrific...) novel about an former priest who sees demons...

This short (part of "A Calling All Souls" anthology) is a story about Calvin, who meets a mysterious sniper, Matthew, when the other guy shot somebody at Calvin's father's funeral. But Matt's not like what he seems. And the guy shot is also not like what he looks like.
I think, one of the things I love about Vivien Dean's stories, is how she depicts loneliness so frickin' well, I can actually feel it in my chest. It's emotional and tender and I feel for Calvin and Matt so much *hugs them*

For its subgenre and length, Dean's story-telling is beautifully crafted. The prose creates vivid imagery throughout; the characters are exquisitely dimensional; and I can't say enough how much I enjoyed seeing the world through the POV of an artist, who sees colors in tastes and tactile sensations. It was a nice touch, to say the least. Pun intended, of course :)
