A friend suggested I read this book when I developed an interest in learning more about the RAF during WWII. I had first become interested through watching the british tv series, Foyle's War which is set during WWII and involves an RAF pilot as the son of the title character.
I really adored this book, not because I learned a great deal about the RAF, but because it is Roald Dahl at his most honest, funny, endearing and dark all at once.
I was shocked to learn from this book how little ...more

this is 2 books combined- BOY is roald dahl's memoir of his childhood and GOING SOLO is a memoir of his military experience. GOING SOLO is much better but both are good. written in his typical style, its more of a story than an autobiography. i love all of roald dahl's stories but GOING SOLO is by far my favorite.

My favorite author! So very funny!
Have you ever heard the term 'ancient sister'? That's how young Dahl in this autobiography novel called his step sister who was years older than he.
Just prepare yourself to have a good laugh from the beginning to end. Super!

I'm not much of a fan of war history, but I do love Roald Dahl. The only reason I gave this book 4 stars is because it got rather slow in some parts, but there was really no other way to write it, given the fear and death he saw and experienced as a part of the war.
