recommends it for: those want to read everything Capote wrote
I don't know what I was expecting when I picked Answered Prayers up at the library. It's a cross between something you'd read in Playboy and Vanity Fair magazines. Not a classy story. If it hadn't been written by Capote, I probably wouldn't have even bothered picking it up.

Capote drunk himself dead and on the way he wrote this collection of stories.

Whatever possessed Capote to turn on his lifelong friends, like Jackie O. and her sister, Lee Raziwill, William and Babe Paley, and the rest of the New York social set is beyond me. The fact that this novel was contracted for in 1966 and remained unpublished until after his death, says much about his ambivalence towards the project. At the same time, Capote spent many years being the lapdog to moneyed New Yorkers, wined and dined at the finest restaurants before going back to his room at the Y...more

It's a shame there isn't a complete behemoth version of this on the market. My secret wish is that he did finish it and it's hidden away somewhere, only to be found one day. It's delightfully sleazy and scandalous, and very well written.

After doing the hard crime angle, the world of celebrity gossip was a new career in a new town. He managed to get accepted and the vault of stories opened up. Too bad he printed some of the more spicy parts in advance, or he might've been able to get all the...more

Having never read anything by Capote before, I didn't know what to expect but I definitely didn't expect this. That's not a bad thing-- I was just taken by surprise by just about everything except the wit (I at least knew that about Capote). I can see why Answered Prayers angered a lot of the socialites that Capote knew and used as templates, but I really enjoyed the scandalous and provocative air of it.

I really wish Capote had finished, because the third installment does just leave the...more

I fully believe that I would not love this book so much if it were finished. Intended to be Capote's long-awaited, great novel, he died before finishing it, and the snippets were recently compiled into book form.

The amusing vignettes presented coupled with Capote's lyrical prose create a book that must be read with a pen, so one can underline all of the great lines, though it may lead to a book full of notations!

It's a quick and easily read book that never fails to amuse. Highly recomme...more

The thinly veiled catty take on his friends was never finished, so Truman never got his revenge on those who ostracized him. You can see the beginnings of what would have been a socially devastating book for many in the La Cote Basque section (sadly, this restaurant is now closed). The beginning two stories, while vivid, are somewhat unrealised.

Of course I wish he had finished it. Where it ends is okay, but leaves to many questions that really need to be answered for character development.

That said, a beautiful story (slutty and scandalous as it may be). Easton-esque, but set in a time that is not the eighties, but sadly just like the eighties.

I read this book because Douglas Coupland recommended it in some good books to read list of his I saw. The book is basically three chapters from a novel Capote never finished - or several short stories- depending on how you look at it. A must read for Capote fans.

Talk about a foul (albeit unfinished) novel. Answered Prayers is interesting if you know the story behind Capote's writing it and how it alienated him from all his former friends, but this book really does show what a dirty mind he had!

i don't wish truman finished this book - i think its perfect as is. he's a brilliant writer who understands the less is more philosophy and demostrates it beautifully. i like his sharp tongue and wit. it's refreshing.

Love Capote's writing, although his disillusion is so very apparent in this unfinished piece. Yet I still finished it wanting to know more, especially about Kate McCloud...it's a shame he never completed it.

This book lacked the final polish and rewrite an author would give to his work. For this reason, I felt it shed light on Capote's writing methods. Not jis greatest but very good considering he never finished it.

it's unfinished, so it's just not very good, although there are some very funny moments and it's generally entertaining. Plus it has whoring it in. I'm sorry, that biases me
