This is one of those books that I couldn't really get into until about half way through. It seems like he puts all the good stories at the end. Like everyone else has written, this isn't the Roald Dahl of children's books. Lots of revenge stories, lots of built up resentment, meek men, overpowering women, and a good deal of misogyny and irony to tie it all together.
I think it's worth reading for those who like the era of short stories of JD Salinger, Hemmingway, etc., but it's nothing I woul...more

Anyone who appreciates short stories but does not require postmodern pyrotechnics.
Such a refreshing book of short stories. There is nothing fancy to these stories--the author sets up a premise, gives some spare yet telling detail, and usually adds some sort of plot twist that surprises and pleases. Some of these I had read before, in high school or college, where they were rightly held up as great examples of the short story genre. The ones here that I had not read were just as good.

Terribly disturbing... especially when you read it at the age of 9 (My question is, what was this book doing in the library of an elementary school??).
But the stories are oh so deliciously twisted. You think Roald Dahl only wrote cutesy children's books? No, my friend. This is Roald Dahl like you've never known him.

great short stories
Roald Dahl stories are such an institution people that have never read him even know his stories. You know the one about the wife who beats her husband to death with the leg of lamb and then destroys the evidence by ____. Yeah, you can probably finish that one, I know you can. Roald Dahl rules!

Very CREEPY! One thing learned very well from this book:
You NEVER hide an evidence. You COOK it and let the police eat it.
Mr. Dahl never failed to amaze me. An amazing adult Roald Dahl's book. Well, to me, his works are always amazing anyway!

A treat to go back in time and read these stories again. I went looking for the 'Ratcatcher' trilogy at the end and couldn't resist revisiting the others.

This book made me appreciate reading short stories again. Roald Dahl's dark, bizarre and sometimes grotesque stories are brilliantly written.

People who like creepy short stories
This is the third time I've read all the stories in this book, and I am still amazed at how unsettling they all are. Props to Roald Dahl.

Dahl has a really macabre sense that reminds me of Alfred Hitchcock stories of my younger days!
