George's Marvelous Medicine
George's Grandma is a grizzly, grumpy, selfish old woman with pale brown teeth and a small puckered up mouth like a dog's bottom. Four times a day she takes a large spoonful of medicine, but it doesn't seem to do her any good. She's always just as poisonous after she's taken it as she was before. When George is left to look after her one morning, it's just the chance he ne...more

The funniest thing about this book is the dedication page. "This book is for doctors everywhere." Ha! Roald Dahl was such a cheeky devil.
George is stuck at home alone with his mean, scary, and very demanding grandma. He's supposed to give her medicine at eleven o'clock. Instead of giving her the usual medicine, he concocts a replacement batch, hoping it will improve Grandma's disposition. Considering the fact that I'm a big sucker for children's books, I can't deny that Roald Dahl holds a special place in my heart (naks) and I have read almost all of his books.
I dunno, maybe I wasn't in a good mood when I read this or maybe I was just bored at the time but... (I hate to say this) for me this is the most uninteresting book I have read written by him.

As a child I did not read this book do not know why, but as an adult I really enjoyed it. I liked the story, the characters - Gran was my favourite. The liquids and things put into the toxic medicine were so funny. The reaction from the characters from it was brilliant, you did not know what was coming next it keep the reader engaged and wanting to continue reading to find out what was going to happen next.

We all know those people who complain, or who are just miserable. For George, it’s his grandmother, a mean 'grunion', who is never satisfied or pleased. This story is a great read for anyone from the age of 6+.
George, eight was in charge of his grandmother’s care, while his mother shopped, his father worked the farm. No matter how hard he tried, she found fault in all he did. Just the sight of him set her off, complaining that he was growing too quickly. Numerous times that morning she reminded...more

I'm a huge fan of Roald Dahl and as a fan I can say this is simply not one of his best. A relatively short book even for the intended target audience, which is 9-12ish, what started out as a fun story about a boy and his very grumpy grandmother just never quite lived up to my expectations. More silly than clever, and disappointing, especially since the beginning was strong.

Georges Marvelous Medicine is an interesting book. The book is about a child named George who is tired of living with his grandma due to her attitude. George lives on a small farm with his mom, dad, and grandma. His dad has several different medicines in his barn for his animals. One day George gets the idea to make a medicine that would help cure his grandma of her attitude or get rid of her. He goes around the housing finding some of the most dangerous chemicals he can and brews up a medicine...more
George is a small boy of eight, and when he's left all alone one day with his grouchy old grandmother, he determines to make her a new medicine to replace the medicine that she takes, which doesn't seem to do her any good. He mixes all sorts of fantastical things into the brew, from shampoo, to lipstick, to all sorts of animal medicines, to brown paint, to anti-freeze, and much more. In the real world, such a mixture would almost certainly kill you. But with Roald Dahl, anything is possible. And...more

Typically Dahl with a tale of a child overcoming abuse and adversity with his wits and everyday household products. Nonsense mixed with Dahl's odd childlike morality. It works, but it also feels just a bit lacking. What plot there is is both underdeveloped and abrupt - getting around to making the medicine is rather elongated, but the rest of the story is jumpy, sporadic and rapid. And then there is the capitalist sub-plot, cruelty...more

George lives on a farm with his mum, dad, and his grandma, however George does not like his grandma much at all. He views her as ‘moany’ and horrid. One day he was left with the job of giving her medicine, and had the ‘genius’ idea of giving grandma his own personal medicine in an attempt to make her nicer...or merely get his own back for all the nasty things she had said and done to him.

My memories of reading this book as a child are of sparking a fascination with potions! The idea that George is making a magical medicine with things around the house makes it seem real and like something anybody could do. Reflecting on it now as an adult, there are good and bad consequences of this. It is nice that as a child, George's Marvellous Medicine gave me an interest to go and make my own potions made from different kinds of shampoo, which I thoroughly enjoyed. However, worryingly it is...more

I really enjoyed this children's book as it kept my attention from beginning to end through its humour and sense of imagination. It is about an eight year old boy named George who is left to take care of his Grandmother while his parents are out. She is demanding, rude and quite simply frustrates George to the point where he decides to replace her usual medicine with his own home remedy in order to give her a shock. He boils up items from a range of locations to create his concoction. On giving...more

George is left at home alone with his grandmother. He had been left a task from his mother to give his grandmother's medication. George dislikes his grandma, and there are many colourful adjectives within the text that Dahl uses to describe her. Therefore George begins to create his own medicine to give to his grandmother, he cooks it up using all measures of ingredients around his farm and his house and then ...read the book to find out what happens.

This is a very entertaining and enjoyable book about an eight year old boy, George, who lives with his mother, father and grandmother. George is fed up with Grandma’s rudeness, selfishness and cruel the way she treats him, so he decides to brew up a marvellous medicine to cure her. George puts everything peculiar he can find in the house into the medicine and boils it up in a large saucepan. The result of Grandma taking the medicine leads to some very entertaining circumstances.

I greatly enjoyed re-reading this Roald Dahl classic. It tells the story of our protagonist George who is fed up of his grandmother’s nagging and rudeness. So instead her usual medicine he decides to make his own to give her. He takes his ingredients from all around the house, including shampoo, floor polish and anti-freeze proving a good reason for each inclusion. For example the shampoo is to ‘wash her tummy’.
