Like many others, I remember the Roald Dahl books that I read, or had read to me, during my childhood fondly, including Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, James and the Giant Peach, and especially, Matilda. Perhaps because I expected to have the same childhood reading adventure as I had with those books, I liked, but did not love, The BFG. I think that Dahl's idea for the story is a creative one, but little things, such as the puns on the names of countries when the...more

in a sentence: sophie, a little girl on the top floor of an icky orphanage, is awake during the witching hour and knows something is up...and then she meets a big, friendly, giant! let the adventure begin!

I first found this book in about 2nd grade at my school Library. I borrowed it since I'd read most of Roald Dahl's other children's books and had my dad read it to me. Let me point out that my father is the best story-teller/reader. He does voices for everyone and he has this great English accent that is perfect for Roald Dahl books. I fell in love with the simple giant who has deep insights, the wonderful adventures, the dream collecting, the possibility of little girls doing great things, and...more

I loved this book when I re-read it about a month ago just as much as I loved it when my third-grade teacher read it aloud to my class seventeen years ago. The Big Friendly Giant himself is charming, and I have always loved the cameo appearance of a certain very famous Brit. (I would love to know this person's opinion of the story, too - I personally would be delighted in their shoes.)

I kept hearing my daughter bursting out laughing as we lay next to each other reading at bedtime, so after she was done with this book I grabbed it to read. It was hilarious. I read Roald Dahl books as a kid and had forgotten how whimsical and unique his books are. You can read it in a night or 2 if you need a break from your regular reading!

It was an absotlute great book! I thought it was a great story about giants. I read it almost every sec. of the day! I read it around the time I read Where the Red fern Grows. Most of the books I've read are amazing.

If you like to read aloud to your kids, I can't think of a better book, although several other Roald Dahl books may be close. The kids loved it, the parents loved it and it is easy to include fun character voices.

I have to suppress the urge to begin reading this aloud, even to myself! What a great read aloud book! Such incredibly funny, nonsensical words with an endearing giant for a main character.

"the BFG" was always my favorite roald dahl book (i figure most people my age have a special favorite, since we grew up with them in the 80's)-- so i couldn't resist when i saw it in a used bookstore a couple months ago for $1. i found it made delightful bedtime reading, just a couple pages every once in a while when i was feeling particularly stressed out or icky. this book is such a lovely fantasy. i remember very vividly my mental images of it from when i was a kid, so it was great ...more

This is a book about a giant and a little girl. The giant is not really mean like all the other giants. Well the other giants are really mean because they eat children!! Yea sounds pretty mean huh?? Well the nice friendly giant does not eat children at all. He has to eat these terrible snozzcumbers wich taste horrible. He has no choice to eat those horrible things because he doesn't want to hurt the children. The big friendly giant gives dreams at night. When nobody can see him. He sneeks throug...more

The BFG, the Big Friendly Giant, is wandering around the streets at night, to bring dreams to the kids. Doing that he meets Sophie, who one night cannot sleep and thus is standing at her window and watches the Giant. Because Sophie has seen way too much, the Giant has to take her with him. Of course Sophie is afraid of this huge creature, but befriends him quite quickly - after all, he is the BFG. Together they develop a plan how to fight the real bad giants.

I just finished reading this to the kids. It was was filled with too strange of words and concepts were a little too big for the 3 year old. However, she sat still and listened. The 5 year old followed the main themes and could report back to me what happened, too. So she "got it" even if she couldn't have had the same appreciation for whizzpoppers as an older child would have.
Not a bad book for kids. A little scary, perhaps with the 50 foot giants that eat little kids...more
