A fun book to read. It draws you in with just the first chapter. It is very entertaining and crazy. You never know what could happen. A nice escape from your life into one that is much more dysfunctional. I would recommend this book to anyone who remembers what it is like to be young, occasionally crazy and in love. The same author also wrote "Crazy Ladies" which is equally a fun book to read, however, I thought that "Mad Girls in Love" is better. In a way, Crazy Ladies is su...more

Hilarious! This book is fun and enjoyable, in part because of the crazy, yet very "human" and likeable nature of the characters.

When Bitsy breaks her husband’s nose and knocks him unconscious with a frozen rack of ribs, she flees with her daughter from her unhappy marriage and tries to keep her daughter away from her calculating, unfriendly in-laws. This story hilariously narrates decades of Bitsy’s and her family’s lives in the South, including Bitsy’s mother Dorothy who ...more

This book was a wonderful follow-up to Crazy Ladies. It allowed me to find out what happened to characters that I'd grown to love.

I'm really going to miss these characters. I like their authenticity in that none of the women "end up" in life the way you'd expect based on how they are when they're younger. I found that really true to life, because in my experience, I'm nothing like I or anyone else expected me to be in my life right now. My original plans to be a Peace Corps volunteer, forest ranger, world traveler turned into government lawyer, single mom. You just never know where your path is going to lead.

This is just a great girlie'girl book. I really liked it. I cried when it was over because I got to know the characters so well and I was sad that it ended.

recommends it for: Anyone who enjoys southern "quirky" characters & humor.
This was a very entertaining book. It is filled w/ quirky, funny, loving characters. The book is filled w/ emotion. One minute you will be laughing & the next you'll be wanting to cry. There was only one issue in the book that I did not completely agree w/. I wish that "issue" had turned out differently. All in all I thought this was a very good read w/ entertaining southern quirky characters that you come to care about.

This was a really nice, light-hearted read. I caught myself laughing out loud at times and could feel my heart pounding at others. I fell in love with the quirkiness of the characters and I found them all more endearing with every flaw.

And I just want more of her work - more and more. These are rich with characters and dialog. Each and every one of hers that I've read so far.

I wasn't thrilled with this book.
I picked it up at the library, the little library in town where I live, where they have a small collection of audio books on CD, as opposed to the city library which has tons.
This was one of the few audio books the town library had in stock, and so I took a chance. I'm still trying to decide if the book was worth the five or so hours it took to listen to.
Mainly, I felt depressed when I finished it. I don't want to ruin it for people who might actually ventu...more

I had to stop. I don't think I reached page forty. And I think it had the potential to be a good story, too. I wanted to get farther. But there was so much goopy Southern talk that I had to put it down. One of the best things about reading books set in the South, written by talented Southern writers, is the colorful and punchy vernacular. But it isn't realistic for every other sentence to drip with it, and it suffocates the rest of the book when Southernisms are used in place of author voice and...more

I'm a sucker for anything Southern...so I picked this up on a bargain table at B & N. I hadn't even recognized the author's name so I had no idea it was a sort of precursor to Mermaids in the Basement, a book I read earlier this year. It wasn't until around page 300 that I started recognizing characters...that was kind of strange! I should have been more observant I guess..

This book was written well before Mermaids but it includes many of the same characters, although the focus in on t...more

This book is WAAAY to long for chick lit! I picked it up at the library with no expectations - and I think if it had been 2 or 3 hundred pages I would have thought is was a fairly good book. I didn't think the content or characters merited over 500 pages.

The writing was fine - the quirky plot entertained for awhile - but I can't say that I grew to care about the characters - I kept coming back to "What the hell are they thinking" It kind of seemed like a mediocre soap opera to me...more

This book was bland. I had to force myself to finish it. But I did finish, so it wasn't all bad. It's about southern women and their relationships. Read the Ya-Ya sisterhood instead.

I loved this book. Some of the characters in this book were a spin off to Mermaids in the Basement. Great book..love the stories that take place in the south and span generations.

Ok, but I feel like the book could be 300 pages instead of 600. Sometimes I get bored with it. But, I have about 75 pages left as of right now so it could be going somewhere!

I gave four stars just because it got super good in the end. However, most of the book is a 3-star book. It does make you smile and has lots of sex in it... and the f word.
