I'd say almost a 4. I defnitely wanted to keep reading to find out what crazy thing would happen next to this family. I can't imagine growing up this way and going on to be successful like most of the children did. It really gives credit to the human spirit. THe parents in this memoir are just unbelievable nuts. Hmmm, let's see - I have a teaching degree but I would rather starve my kids than work. Or I would rather be homeless than work.

This was an amazing story. How this poor little girl went through life growing up and watching her family struggling and as an adult actually cracked through the ceiling of the corporate world. I particularly was moved by the relationship she had with her father. Makes me miss my dad even more. A must read especially for someone who doesn't think they have a chance to get ahead in life.

this is a short and memorable book- if you come from a totally dysfunctional family and want to read about another one as a kindred... read this book. my family isn't really like hers, but there was something about how she writes where her extreme parents can at times look bold and revolutionary or just plain mad and irresponsible.

She may have lived in cars and shacks all her life, but her parents who were too consumed with themselves to provide the most basic necessities somehow managed to convey to their daughter that anything is possible. A true story of how believing in yourself can lead you away from what others may feel is your destiny.

I enjoyed The Glass Castle. I was nervous as I am cynical regarding memoirs esp after A Million Little Pieces. This story is captivating while still almost unbelievable. I wanted more...diagnoses, updates, how DCF wasn't involved! I recommend it...nothing too heavy...but an enjoyable read.

Just finished this (Sabrina was nice enough to lend it to me for a trip home to PA) and it was great. A amazing memoir about a girl growing up in a poor, crazy and adventurous family. So good that I spent multiple consecutive evenings staying up WAY past my bedtime to finish it.

This book had such vivid descriptions of the squallor the main character lived in. It was a page turner, wondering if things would ever get better for her. An interesting and frustrating read. You definitley get to know the characters well.

I only gave this book two stars because I cannot remember much about it. I read it a while ago. I don't have any bad thoughts about it, so I must have enjoyed it. But at the same time, I don't remember much about it at all....

This was a great book and a quick read - an engaging account of the author's experience growing up in a truly dysfunctional family. Not only did I enjoy reading it, but it sure made me feel normal in comparison.

I thought that this book presented an interesting perspective from someone whose life is vastly different than mine. The insights and comments about her life were both thoughtful and appreciated.

This was a book club choice. True story about a family where the parents don't feel they need to be in control or even provide for their children.
It makes me glad I had the family I had!!!!!

My favorite kinda memoir....gritty childhood, enduring all kinds of challenges, but humorous, sweet, and a demonstration of unbelievable resiliency. If this story is really true--it's amazing

Although it was extremely disturbing to really see how some children are so badly neglected, it was an amazing story. It also taught me more about the real power of addiction.

This is a wonderful account of a girl's life who was growing up poor and how she was able to succeed in life but stay connected to her family that was important to her.

I absolutely LOVED this book! I was amazed page after page at this girl's childhood. Made me very thankful for the parents I have, even with all their quirks.

Excellent fast read about a dysfunctional family. Could be considered fiction, although it is supposed to be a true story. Loved it!

Amazed by this life story and the triumph over circumstances that would leave most people desperate, helpless and depressed.

Such an interesting story on the life choices people make and how it determines their place. Love stories about people.
