Amanda's Wedding
by
Jenny Colgan
Melanie and Fran are two charmingly wisecracking young Londoners who simply can't believe it when their old schoolfriend Amanda, Satan's own PR agent, manages to get herself hitched to a laird (Scottish for lord). Who cares that Fraser McConnel has worn the same ratty Converse sneakers for years and that his castle is really a pile of rubble -- all the social -climbing que...more

I bought this book at the dollar store, and I think I paid too much.[return][return]Terrible story, full of unoriginal stereotypes and unlikeable characters. The main character, Melanie, is shuffled through one pathetic situation after another with no redeeming qualities. At least Bridget Jones had charm. We are somehow supposed to like a woman who: treats her roommate like crap just because she's odd, skips work all the time for selfish reasons (and only gets transfered to another department in...more
It's no secret that I'm a massive Jenny Colgan fan, and her debut novel ' Amanda's Wedding', published back in 2000, is a real classic.
90s girl-about-town Mel is adjusting to life without posh-boy Alex, whose attempts to make it big in the music biz have propelled him to the land of the free and Bruce Springsteen. Having omitted to mention his grand tour to Mel however, he has left our heroine a tad disturbed--grounds indeed for taking comfort in the arms of smelly, over-sized accountants with j...more

I actually finished this book, which is more than I can say for the last few stories I've started. I read the whole thing in nearly one sitting- but that was more to do with my own boredom and free time. The characters were actually pretty well rounded, one could say realistic in their faults. Since when do characters in chick lit need to be likeable or "redeemed" in order to be entertaining? What interested me was the fact that the author spoon feeds stereotypical or classic archtypes to you bu...more
I couldn't finish this one. It got on my nerves, and it was too slow to begin with... so I just stopped reading it. The main character is moody and kind of self-loathing. And she had a potty mouth from what I can remember. I was thinking it would be good, if I could just skip to a later part. I just couldn't get through it.

Amanda’s Wedding took me by surprise. As I stated in my previous review of another work by Jenny Colgan (Meet Me at the Cupcake Café), I really enjoyed that book and looked forward to reading another one of her books.

I loved this book.
Melanie is trying to cope without her posh boyfriend Alex who's attempts to make it in the music biz have led him to leave the country.
Alex makes a return, just as Melanie and her best friend Fran's former high school friend and social climber Amanda is marrying a scottish laird with whom Melanie has long adored. It's not long before Amanda, Fran asnd Fraser's brother Angus get together to rescue fraser from the wannabe "IT" girl.
A funny read; with many twists and turns.

Planted firmly in Bridget Jones territory, Colgan's first novel takes off with the kind of manic energy and sharply vulgar humor that only a Brit-sitcom can, before settling down into the typical fare that comprises contemporary girl-fic. Londoners Mel and Fran, both 20-something, are horrified to learn that the third member of their childhood trio, Amanda--an uppity, shallow brat who's burned them one too many times--has landed Fraser McConald, a Scottish lord, as her fianc . Compounding their...more
British Chic Lit-This was a nice break from some of the stuff I have been reading lately. Amanda is actually a friend of the main character Melanie. Actually, I wouldn’t call Amanda a friend since she doesn’t treat Melanie or Fran (Melanie’s best friend) like anything but mere acquaintances. If even that. Amanda is marrying a longtime friend of Mels, Frasier. But every one thinks Amanda is marrying him for his family status and money. Mel lives with a flatmate, Linda who is very strange. Mel is...more
It was OK. I enjoyed actually while I was reading it, but somehow I think that it is too simple. It is very readable but still very easy to forget.
Title is ''Amanda's WEDDING''and there are maybe two or three pages about actual wedding.
The twist at the end is unpredictable but not the best solution really.
Terms like ''Buuu. Huraa!'' aren't truly sentences.
But in the end, it is a good book for summer when you are trying to find something to do during hot days.

i loved this book!it was one of the first chick lit type books i ever read and i really loved it, i thought it was hilarious and even though the plot is probably quite ridiculous it is supposed to be a funny book and it shouldnt be taken too seriously. i really liked all the characters, hated amanda and fran actually really annoyed me,but the end wasnt as predictable as i expected it to be so for that i liked it even more!
What a let down!! 200-some odd pages of how the characters want to take down Amanda's wedding and then when it gets to the wedding there's maybe 2 pages about it? Seriously? And the ending? I already can't remember what happened...that can't be good. The main character Melanie was so self absorbed she couldn't see what was going on around her. The jokes fell flat and even more disturbing was that sound effects that were written in...chaw chaw chaw? Ergh? Blaugh? What is that??? And PS - "?" and...more
Well, first of all it wasn't about the actual wedding or the planning of one. Rather it was about Mel and her friends trying to prevent one. The story was ok, but somehow it wasn't really funny.
I actually really enjoyed this book, I did not expect much after reading the reviews here and yes at times I thought they were a bit over the top with sabotaging the wedding the things that they did but overall it was an easy read which gave me a few laughs and I loved the way it ended. Defiently an enjoyable read!
At first I found this book hard to follow. The writer used a lot of English slang which was unfamiliar to this American reader. I also found that I was not fully into the characters who seemed shallow to me. Perhaps a younger person would have clicked with the characters more as they are all fairly young and focused on love and amrriage. However, by the end, I was finally beginning to care about the characters and was interested in finding that all that angst found a way to work itself into reso...more
I read the synopsis on goodreads and well...besties, bitches and a ploy to destroy a wedding? I couldn't resist! Thank goodness I didn't! I actually lol'd! witty, sarcastic and deeply intriguing in a who does she finally end up with way ....I read it in the ebook format and I might actually buy it!
Just one thing left me with a bit of a sad feeling.... I actually preferred Angus over Alex or Fraser or obviously Nicholas who now that I think about it is barely mentioned..... overall I really love...more
