Message to Bryan Lee O'Malley: Fat jokes and gay jokes aren't funny. I don't even mean that in a huffy self-righteous way. I mean your book stops being clever whenever you go out of your way to joke about how fat chicks look bad and Scott's roommate is a fag and isn't it totally hot that Ramona had sex with a girl. It's like how the movie Airplane suddenly becomes boring whenever they show the gay guy. That type of writing is dumb, lazy, and - who knew? - offensive.

For the most part I loved the book, it continued the trend that started in book 4 by really bringing the supporting characters into play, in a way that reminds me of The Simpsons in it's prime. Your not just caring about a character anymore your caring about a community, and there's something cool about that.
That said I didn't care for the Lisa subplot. I was intrigued by her character in Book 4, and it felt a little anticlimatic. Also Scott's reaction to her bordered on Dickishness. Also R...more

These books (the series will run to seven volumes, I believe) are pretty damn great so far. They look like mangas, read more or less like autobiographical comics, but pitch everything with just the right mix of humor and craziness that they achieve something special.
They work much like _Buffy the Vampire Slayer_ does, taking real life situations and genre-fying them, so that the ordinary perils of falling in love and learning about someone's past and learning from your own mistakes get trans...more

Love this series. Awesome fun! Fast-paced, cool characters, witty banter, and action, action, action! Nice blend of manga and Canadians. I appreciate that the central character, Scott Pilgrim, is kind of a dopey weiner in a Luke Skywalker sorta way. And of course I love girlfriend while enjoying the haunting past of his previous love. Oh! and the gay roommate/voice of reason is priceless! Here's part of the successful recipe: background Indie-rock references mixed with what it's like being in a ...more

Scott Pilgrim is dating this girl Ramona who has seven evil ex-boyfrinds. In order to officially date her, he has to beat each of the evil exes. Mayhem and silliness ensues.
I recommend this comic to everyone. Looking for murder mystery? Read Scott Pligrim. Need to whiten your teeth? Read Scott Pilgrim. Need a good self help book? Read Scott Pilgrim. I can't even type this review without bouncing around about how great this comic is.

Eep! Cute. Made me stay up too late one of the two nights it took me to get through it. One of the things I particularly like about this series is that there are some bits that are just jokes and nothing else. And then there are some bits that are jokes that are also indicative of characters and so on. But I'm a big fan of the throwaway gag, and vol. 4 certainly has plenty, plus it doesn't go all flashbacky like volume 3, which means way less confusion. And finally, getting it together is an awe...more

Yay! Dreamy sub-space-in-your-head trippiness is back! Considering it's how Scott met Ramona, it seems very appropriate in this book.
More girls fighting (and kissing!)
Scott DOES get it together, I mean, job, girl, priorities. We all grow up, don't we? And reading Scott Pilgrim as he finesses the subtle slip into grown-up-ness, lets one realize how quickly it all passes when we follow the decisions of our heart.
Lots of Experience Points to be had here.

The thrilling combination of slacker comedy, romance, and video games continues!
Best line in the book: "If your life had a face, I'd punch it in the balls."
Best videogame moment: when Scott gains the ability to love
Best villain: not Ramona's fourth ex!
It doesn't get five stars, however, because the cast is just getting too large. Who can really tell the difference between Kim, Julie, and all those other girls? Also, the music subplot was pretty weak.

the scott pilgrim series has been fun, laugh at yourself easy reading from volume 1 and this one is no different. they defenitly don't get stale though. each one progresses through the story while also making us ask for questions, wonder about more odd circumstances and laugh more and more. if i can re-read the first three volumes and totally consume this new, 4th volume in just a few hours and not even realize time has passed, you know it's good!

It's remarkable, it took exactly my bus ride to school to read this graphic novel. Like the other three Scott Pilgrim books, I read this in one fell swoop, and enjoyed it quite a lot. In fact, I laughed out loud at least 5 times. Although I sometimes get the characters mixed up, and I'm not rooting for the romance at the heart of the plot, the humor is excellent. Lines like "If your life had a face, I'd punch it" exemplify O'Malley's strengths.

Clever dialogue, moderately zany plots, a lovably lazy protagonist, a good Canadamanga (sure) art style, and plenty of 8-bit gaming references are a few of the things I love about Scott Pilgrim. Scott's roommate Wallace Wells is essentially who I want to be when I grow up. Except not necessarily gay. Also I'm not sure what he does for a living, but he doesn't seem to make a lot of money. He sure is hilarious though. Also gay.

This might just be the best one in the series so far, with plentiful Zelda and Sonic references as well as full-color (gasp!) pages in the first chapter, Scott Pilgrim blows it out of the park again with his tales of young adult mischief and romance (and a little bit of growing up thrown in for good measure). Anyway, if you haven't read any of these books do so now, and prepare to laugh your way into feeling a few years younger at heart.

Top 5 reasons why I love this book:
5. Ramona's 4th evil ex-boyfriend is a girl. A girl half-ninja!
4. Knives Chau's dad
3. Scott Pilgrim's Zelda-inspired dreams
2. "Oh my god! You were raised by teenage girls? No wonder you're such a sensitive boy!" Ramona to Scott
1. "If your life had a face, I would punch it." Kim Pine to Scott (best line EVER)
I can't believe I have to wait until February 2009 for the next one. . .

Oh Scott Pilgrim, I heart you forever!
If you aren't reading this series because comic books scare you, or something like that, you're totally missing out. SP #4 isn't the best in the series, but it's still pretty damn awesome. There's a particular moment involving Scott's brain, which will be beloved by me forever.
We're going to have to wait, like, a year for the next one though, aren't we? Le sigh. SO HARD.

This one is definitely my favorite of the first four Scott Pilgrims...maybe it was just capriciousness on my part, but I really loved this one, while only kinding learning others, and being a little frustrated by the third one in particular. The series as a whole is a solid four stars, but I'm glad to give this book five stars and the previous book three stars, if only to mix things up a bit.

I do so love the Scott Pilgrim series, for all the banter if nothing else, and this volume does not disappoint. This is the kind of title you can read without necessarily reading the others, but it's best if you do start at the beginning (so you can understand the whole evil exes thing, as well as the occasional trip into subspace.) The style, the humor, the heart -- it's all great.

So yeah. Scott Pilgrim, eh? This is what, volume four? Yeah, it's the one where Scott gets it together, like the title says. So far, this may be my favorite volume. But volume three is totally cool too. I like this one not because Scott has to fight an evil lesbian, but because he has to find a new place to live, get a job, and say the L-word. Not lesbian, the other L-word.

The series is staying consistently good. I'm fine with the books coming out late if that's what is keeping the quality up.
There were a few laugh-out-loud moments ('sexy phase'). Unfortunately, I was reading on an airplane, returning home from Thanksgiving.
Felt dumb I hadn't figured out the 'evil exes' thing sooner. Very sad we will probably be seeing less of Wallace now.

An arts blog I like (New York magazine's "Vulture") previewed this one a while back, and I finally got around to putting the whole series on hold at the library. I read all four this weekend and they made me very glad. I recommend them as a pleasing alternative or accompaniment to March Madness (the main form of "entertainment" in my house at the moment).

judi was kind enough to hand deliver this to me after i inadvertently had it delivered to my old office. after dinner, i raced home, threw on a pot of tea and reheated a brownie to tide me through it. i liked it, though not as much as the last one. isn't (spoiler alert) moving in together before he defeats the 7th ex sort of.. not.. making.. sense?
