Best Ex-Fight Yet! Geez am I turning into one of those people that swears the latest book in a series is always THE BEST...or are these books just getting progressively better? I really am beginning to think that scott and ramona's relationships is one of the most honest and realistic depiction of early 20's love I've seen in a while...you know minus the samurais chopping moving buses in half and people exploding into piles of bunnies.

Message to Bryan Lee O'Malley: Fat jokes and gay jokes aren't funny. I don't even mean that in a huffy self-righteous way. I mean your book stops being clever whenever you go out of your way to joke about how fat chicks look bad and Scott's roommate is a fag and isn't it totally hot that Ramona had sex with a girl. It's like how the movie Airplane suddenly becomes boring whenever they show the gay guy. That type of writing is dumb, lazy, and - who knew? - offensive.

Even aside fro More...

I was a little skeptical about this at first but after Sarah's 3rd or 4th reference to it, my curiosity got the best of me and I'm glad it did because I loved it!

I don't know enough about the art of comics to speak intelligently about O'Malley's merits but I do know that occasionally a graphic novel/comic manages to get me to slow down enough to focus on the pictures as much as the words and O'Malley's graphics had this effect on me.

Additonaly, there were such literary gems More...

These books (the series will run to seven volumes, I believe) are pretty damn great so far. They look like mangas, read more or less like autobiographical comics, but pitch everything with just the right mix of humor and craziness that they achieve something special.

They work much like _Buffy the Vampire Slayer_ does, taking real life situations and genre-fying them, so that the ordinary perils of falling in love and learning about someone's past and learning from your own mistakes g More...

Scott Pilgrim, Vol. 4: Scott Pilgrim Gets It Together / 9781932664492

I got hooked into the Scott Pilgrim franchise after very much enjoying the movie. I'm surprised at how much the movie resembled the first few Scott Pilgrim volumes, but with Volume 4 we're definitely entering territory where most of this graphic novel wasn't included in the movie. It's not hard to see why most of the material here couldn't make it into the film adaptation -- as delightful as this volume is, there's More...

I never really liked Zelda.

I only ever played Link: Zelda 2 on my NES. I could never understand it. I mean, you send this little pixely guy around a grid and get attacked in really uncool ways by things you could never identify. Or maybe you could. If so, this review is not for you. Fuck off.

Whilst reading Scott Pilgrim #4, in which Scott does battle with Ramona’s Evil Ex-Girlfriend, I learned something about Zelda. See, throughout the Scott Pilgrim series, there are funn More...

WOAH! So much learned in this one!!

We learn how old Ramona is and what the star doors mean (if you saw the movie those things confused me. I totally understand them now)

This book wasn't realy in the movie. Sure the evil ex was (omg! A girl!!) but a lot of it wasn't in the movie. I guess they would have had to pay Juno Boy a bit more money and maybe it wasn't in the budget.

(One review for all six Scott Pilgrim books)

These six short graphic novels are the basis of the film Scott Pilgrim vs the World. Although I enjoyed the film, I found the main character incredibly annoying. He's annoying in the books as well, but much less so. I found myself enjoying them much more than the film. Like the film, the basic plot of the series is that the eponymous Scott Pilgrim must defeat the seven evil exes of his girlfriend Ramona Flowers in order to be with her.

Every time I start to write about one of the books in the Scott Pilgrim series, I thumb through the book to refresh my memory. Without fail, each page I land on brings a giant smile to my face. It’s probably my job as a “reviewer” (in quotes because I’m not sure I really review books so much as talk about them and being a book talker sounds dumb) to explain exactly what it is about these books that’s so appealing. Now I’m talking about Volume 4 of the six-volume series and I still haven’t captur More...

I wasn't at all surprised at the appearance of an evil ex-girlfriend in Scott's fighting queue. For one thing, Ramona admits in a previous issue that she's kissed a girl. She seems to only kiss evil people who she then dates, therefore, the appearance of Roxie was fairly expected. I also sort of hate that Scott is not at all upset that Ramona "makes out a little" with her. I mean, Ramona is going over the moon that Scott slept on Liz's couch even though he refused anything remotely More...

By far, this is my least favorite volume of Scott Pilgrim (2 ½ stars), lacks something, what Scott is getting together, it appears that O'Malley is losing, even feels like the drawing are doodles in comparison to the previous books.

In this volume, Scott and Ramona realize that not only are the evil exes who between them ... there is much more to what they will face if they this relationship to move on... the funny part in this comic is that it focuses more on Scott's daily routine an More...

Published on my book blog.

After the amazing third volume, I had high expectations for this one. In general, this one was ok, not as great as the previous one. Plot wise, there's a lot more emphasis on the characters' lives outside the whole "fighting evil exes" thing. I guess this is where the story lost me a bit. The reasons? The main characters.

The art's getting better, but the characters are still annoying. There are still a lot of weird homophobic undertones and constant gay jokes, only now, O'Malley has expanded to include lesbians (complete with constant, unironic lipstick lesbian fantasies by the male characters). A Chinese guy is insensitively referred to as a samurai and depicted with a katana (both Japanese), and more random characters are thrown in.

It's starting to resemble a harem anime, where all women fight ove More...

Having now read four books of this series, I have a better handle on it, but I'm still a bit confused. However, I'm starting to really appreciate the uncertainty. My more generous read of the situation is that O'Malley is doing some pretty ballsy work -- giving us four volumes and counting centered around an unlikeable protagonist. The other possibility is that O'Malley doesn't really find Scott Pilgrim particularly unlikeable. In this volume our eponymous wastrel finally is tasked with "ge More...

Scott Pilgrim is finally moving on, if dating a High School student could be considered moving on for a 23 year old. Though nothing is really happening with Knives asside from riding the bus, and that's just fine by Scott. Scott goes through life wallowing in his past and not wanting to think of the future. He mooches off his gay roommate Wallace, known as the one with the money between the two of them, with all his spare time being devoted to his band, Sex Bob-omb. Then one night he dreams of a More...

"Scott, if your life had a face I would punch it. I would punch your life in the face."

Without giving too much away, Scott's life goes through several drastic changes in this episode. He gets a job, moves out of his place with Wallace, takes an important step in his relationship, and gets approval as a decent human being from a very unlikely source.

I'm starting to wonder if Ramona isn't a little bit shady. What was going on when he was inside her head?

Interesting — even though the details of the film's fight between Ramona and Roxie were lifted from the book's fight between Ramona and Envy, Roxie is still a character in the book. In fact, it's in this fight that Scott gains "the power of love", earning him a sword.

More important, it's only in this fourth volume that I'm realizing how much more the romance and relationships between all the characters is the true story. The film portrayed Scott Pilgrim as more of an acti More...

It’s summer in Toronto and Scott Pilgrim is finally going to get it together. He’s going to start by finally getting a job and stop freeloading off his roommate, Wallace Wells. And he may even step things up with Ramona by finally breaking out the ‘L word.’ Things are still complicated for Scott: he’s had a bit of a break from fighting Ramona’s seven evil exes, but he still has four to defeat. And who is the strange older man who has been trying to kill Scott with a samurai sword? Scott and Ramo More...

I’m an old man and sometimes I take myself a little too seriously and do things like watch documentaries about kidnappings in Brazil or proclaim, "indubitably!" while stroking what few chin hairs I can sprout out. I will also see books like this and ignorantly dismiss them as literary snack packs for kiddies in Tenchi t-shirts. I caved in and picked up a few volumes from the library after seeing some production videos for the Scott Pilgrim movie that’s in the works starring Michael Ce More...

I liked this volume better than the one before it. It wasn't as confusing. It made more sense. And while there's still a lot of characters around, I guess maybe I stopped worrying about most of them. Or maybe there were fewer in this one.

The first few pages were in color, which was cool.

Well, here we are at volume 4 of Scott Pilgrim, entitled "Scott Pilgrim Gets it Together", and it's pretty much more of the same... WHICH IS AWESOME!!!

Writer/artist Bryan Lee O'Malley gives us a book that has coolness, youth, melancholy, and action. He perfectly fuses all these elements together. What may seem like an adolescent romp upon first glance really has some depth if you delve into it and give it the time to get into you.

I liked this one sooooooooooo much more than the third book. Maybe it was the little chart at the beginning that defined each character and definitively explained that Julie Powers is a super bitch, and you're not really supposed to like her. The relationships between the characters seemed more clear in this volume, or maybe this world is just finally starting to gel with me and it took 4 books. I read the first three of these about four years ago, then promptly forgot about them entirely. Now the movie is upon us and Mary Laura had to go lend me her library copies of 4 and 5 and get me started on them again. (For which, thanks!)

O’Malley does a fantastic job of keeping the stakes up as the series progresses. Where volume 5 wrapped up, the score was Scott: 6, Evil Ex-Boyfriends: 0, with one more ex-boyfriend to go (Ramona dated a set of identical twins, separately).

One is lead to believe that Scott is off the hook with this challenge, but then Gideon, Ramona’s most recent (and the most evil) ex-boyfriend, served Scott with marching orders. The final battle will be epic.

According to my arbitrary Goodreads rating, I think this comic is 2 ½ times better than Romeo and Juliet. After giving this some thought, I’ve decided that this is a little bit off – Scott Pilgrim Gets It Together is way better than that!

It’s not hard to deconstruct the appeal of this book, since its mix of pop culture signifiers is all right there on the surface. Still, Bryan Lee O’Malley knows what he’s doing, and this blast of Nintendo powered romantic comedy is the best in the More...

Here I go again with another Scott Pilgrim adventure, but now I'm reading the graphic novels after having seen the movie. So now, I'll be reading the rest of the series with that whole saw-the-movie-first attitude, which can be a bit of a dampener. Did it dampen my reading experience with this book, though?

Firstly, the book starts with a few color pages, which I don't recall seeing in the first three graphic novels I read. I'm so used to the homey monochromatic feel of the books, it wa More...
