Rarely, when I read, do three books come together so very well for one review. But such is the case here with The DaVinci Code, The Authenticator, and Shutter Island.
Imagine, if you will, a kind of number line of style, with the very best writers at the rightmost extreme and the very worst at the left. On the right are those authors who pay great...more

Dennis Lehane NEVER ceases to amaze me with the gift he has. He evokes so much emotion from his readers...simply by the way he strings his words together to make sentences and paragraphs. For example, right off the bat in the prologue the reader is painted this incredible picture:
"If time for me really is a series of bookmarks, then I feel as if someone has shaken the book and those yellowed slips of paper, torn matchbook covers and flattened coffee stirrers have fallen to the floor, ...more

I read this book in one day, coming back from Hawaii with the worst flu I've ever had. I'm sure my delirium added to the amount that this book freaked me out, but I literally still get crawling skin when I think about this book. Just reading the names of the characters makes me skin crawl. I felt so sick and freaked out when I finished it that I felt totally out of myself for a few days.
I COULD NOT put this book down. I don't remember ever being this sucked in to a book.

Forget Mystic River. Shutter Island is the Dennis Lehane book to read. Set in the mid 1950's on a secluded island that serves as a mental institution for the criminally insane, Shutter Island combines elements of psycho-drama and horror with a good mystery and well-rounded characters. U.S. Marshals Daniels and Aule come to the island to investigate the mysterious escape of a violent patient from the hospital, only to be trapped on the island by the worst hurricane in thirty years. The two Marsha...more

This was my first book by Dennis Lehane. I'd been wanting to read him for a while and one of the reasons I read Shutter Island first was all the shining reviews about the big twist you'll never see coming.
I hate to be that person, that party pooper saying "I saw it coming from a mile away" but I was expecting a slap in the face and all I got was a wink. I'd been in on it.
I can't give a mystery novel five stars unless it blows me away and since I nearly had it figured out t...more

Anyone who likes a good mystery
Gloria recommended this book, so I'm going to give it a try. It's already quite intriguing--a mentally ill woman who had killed her children is missing from her room, which was locked from the outside and had only a small window with bars on it. The hospital for the criminally insane is located on a small island, so even escaping from the island would be tricky, Here's an update: if you like mysteries this is a good one. It is by the same author who wrote Mystic River, if that tells you any...more

I have absolutely no idea what happened in this book. Perhaps that makes it an effective story?
This is not a standard Lehane novel; yes, it's set in Boston, but not the mean streets of Dorchester or Southie. It's set on an island in the early 1950's, and psychological and psychopharmacological studies are taking place. Pretty interesting. I'm curious about the movie that's being filmed in MA.
One thing, though: I don't think audio is the best format for this one because of all the ...more

The night I finished this, my mind was left reeling from it for a couple of hours and the next day I was unable to get it out of my head.
Shutter Island is a departure from the Kenzie/Gennaro series and
it's one of those novels that will certainly leave you pondering the whole story once you're finished it.
The less you know about the story, the better. Suffice it to say, this is an excellent read and there are very few novels I have read that made my head buzz for hours after.

Too cute. This book would have made a good short story, maybe a novella, but there just isn't enough plot material to sustain a novel. The result is that most of the book is filler. It starts out with an irrelevant Prologue which doesn't tell the reader anything, then a long irrelevant first chapter with two guys flirting outrageously with each other that gives minimal information, then there are long irrelevant flashbacks about one character's relationship with his wife, then long irrelevant ha...more

I didn't "learn" anything, but I really enjoyed the ride. I can't discuss the aspect of the novel that blew me away, because it would spoil the experience for others, but this is the only novel which I re-read immediately after finishing it for the first time.

LeHane is one of my favorite authors. This was more than mystery—it’s full of twists and turns and utter surprises. I couldn’t put it down. Amazing story telling.

A terrific psychological thriller with lots of plot twists. Dennis Lehane can't write a bad book.

"In summer 1954, two U.S. marshals, protagonist Teddy Daniels and his new partner, Chuck Aule, arrive on Shutter Island, not far from Boston, to investigate the disappearance of patient Rachel Solando from the prison/hospital for the criminally insane that dominates the island. The marshals' digging gets them nowhere fast as they learn of Rachel's apparently miraculous escape past locked doors and myriad guards, and as they encounter roadblocks and lies strewn across their path-most notabl...more

Wow. For my money, Dennis Lehane is the best living American mystery writer. There are some truly gifted mystery authors out there, but Lehane is in a class by himself. And this book is a phenomenal kick in the pants. I'm an avid reader and was part of a reader's advisory committee in my library system which was lead by a librarian who's published a guide to the mystery genre and is an acknowledged expert on the genre in all its many facets. So I was exposed to some of the best authors around m...more

Ashecliffe Hospital is renowned for two things: radical experimental techniques performed on the severely mentall ill and very tight security since many of the patients are very dangerous both to themselves and others. Hence why it is located on an island off the coast of Massachusetts in much the same vein as Alcatraz. When one of the hospital's patients, Rachel Solando, escapes, U.S. Marshals Teddy Daniels and Chuck Aule are called in to investigate. However, Daniels has an additional agenda i...more

I usually read at night, before bed. I'll count the pages in a chapter to see if I can fit another in before I absolutely have to let myself sleep. The problem about reading Shutter Island that way is that I'd see a word or a name in the first page of the next chapter and then I just had to keep reading. And even if that didn't happen, the chapter would end in such a way that I couldn't wait until the next chance I had - probably the next night before bed - to keep reading.

Let me start out by saying mystery novels are not my thing.
I love the movie Mystic River. Once I saw it, and found out it was a book, read it and enjoyed it for what it was - a good story, but not exactly 'literature'. I saw Gone, Baby, Gone last fall in the theaters (yet to read the book) and loved the movie. I decided to read Shutter Island by the same author because I found out that Martin Scorcese is making the movie, to come out in Fall 2009- they filmed all around here all spring. Boo...more
