The Other Daughter (Lisa Gardner).

A psychological suspense Thriller. Melanie Stokes has it all. A prominent wealthy Surgeon father, beautiful loving mother, and a Godfather who dotes on her. She knows she is lucky because she is adopted, and never gave thought to her real parents. She also lives with a family tragedy, one that is never spoken of. Her sister Meagan was murdered 20 years ago, by the child serial killer Russell Lee Holmes.

Melanie starts to ask about her sister, she has memory loss...more

Lisa Gardner is an author I tried for the first time, about this time, last year.

I became a fan quite quickly after reading out of sequence, some of her DD Warren books. I found that Lisa developed her characters extraordinarily well in what is usually only a plot-driven genre, namely crime fiction.

I like Lisa Gardner as much as I like Tess Gerritsen, which is saying something, I like Tell a hell of a lot, and I find the two authors very similar, they write the same genre in a very addictive and...more

I am reviewing the novel The Other Daughter by Lisa Gardner which is an excellent thriller which I bought from kindle. I really enjoyed reading this book & the tension in the story is almost unbearable. The plot is a serial killer is executed via electric chair in Texas. They have only just brought back executions and it's in the year 1977 so it's controversial. No one though can quibble with the fact the particular criminal is a despicable man. He has raped, tortured and murdered 6 young gi...more

I enjoyed reading this book and I rate it : above average. The good thing about it, is that it keeps you wondering about the true identity of the main character Mellanie till the very end and you get the surprise you expected. The pace of the events is not as fast as it should be. I didn't get to like any of he characters, not even Mellanie....I didn't hate them either,..so I suppose that's a negative. I didn't like that David suffered from a crippling arthritis, no good reason for that, but I j...more

This is not the first book that I read by Lisa Gardner and it's a good thing. If I had, I would not read anything else by her. Fortunately, the first book I read by her is part of the DD Warren series and I've become caught up in the lives of Ms. Warren and her former lover Bobby Dodge.

The Other Daughter has an interesting premise - On the day that a convicted serial killer is executed, a young girl is found abandoned in a hospital across the country. She's adopted by the Stokes, parents of Mea...more

I like Lisa Gardner’s suspense thrillers for their fast pace and many twists. The Other Daughter was no different – with just enough romance thrown in to offset the darker elements of the story, it contained enough false leads and 180 degree turn-arounds to keep me guessing until close to the end. However, I must admit that for me the plot was a little bit too far fetched, which took away a lot of the enjoyment and the suspense, despite its action-packed finale. I think that basing the whole plo...more

A young girl turns up in a hospital in Boston at the same time a serial killer is being executed by the state of Texas. Two events that don’t seem connected, except for the fact that the wealthy family who adopts the little girl lost their first daughter to the executed serial killer. The little girl, Melanie, grows up with the best of everything. There is little her parents or uncle won’t do for her.

But when a washed up reporter shows up to talk to Melanie about her past and claims she is the b...more

Melanie Stokes was found in an empty Boston hospital room at the age of 9 with no memory of her life before then, or knowledge of her name. She was adopted by Dr. Harper Stokes and his wife Patricia who were still reeling over the loss of their daughter Meagan 5 years earlier.

Flash forward to the present and Melanie is accosted by a report Larry Digger who claims she is the daughter of the serial killer who killed the Stokes's first daughter. DUN DUN DUN....

And then you need to relax our mind an...more

love Lisa Gardner's books. She is for sure on my top 5 favorite author's list. Her books always leave me guessing until the last few pages and she knows how to write a suspense novel and keep it entertaining and keep you engaged through the whole book.
My first book I ever read by her was The Third Victim. It was about a school shooting. That book is still my #1 all time favorite book and I have been thinking of going back to read it again just because it was so good. And I normally do not rerea...more

My favorite part in the book......

"Melanie, have you ever had a turning point in your life? I know your're only twenty-nine, but have you ever felt yourself at a crossroads, when suddenly all of life was murky, and even though you can't see the landscape and you're not sure where you're going, you know you must take a step. And that this will be an important step. This will be The Step.

Yes, I feel this way often as if i'm stepping into the darkness and trusting, God knows who, that this step wil...more

Melanie was found abandoned in a hospital emergency room. She was adopted by a wealthy doctor and his wife whose own child had been murdered several years before. Melanie grew up with not only every advantage but a loving mother, father, and an older brother who doted on her plus a godfather who thought that the sun rose and set on her.

Years later Melanie, who has no memory of her early life feels that someone wants her to remember it all. Melanie begins to search for clues leading to her ident...more

This is one of three stand alone books presently authored by Lisa Gardner.

In the beginning, a nine year old girl is found at a Boston hospital, she has been placed in an ER cubical and is suffering from convulsions. Once her condition has been stabalized, authorities learn that she has no recollection of her past, nothing that could help them locate the parent or parents who seemingly deserted her.

At nearly the same time, a serial killer will be executed by the state of Texas. The question is...more

I am a twisted individual. There are many people that would attest to that. So, it is no suprise that I occasionally enjoy a good psychological thriller. Lisa Gardner's The Other Daughter did not dissappoint.
Melanie Stokes, the adopted daughter of the weathy and definately twisted Patricia and Harper Stokes, becomes alerted to her sorted past after a visit from has been reporter Larry Digger who claimes to know she is the daughter of serial killer Russell Lee Holmes. The man who confessed to kil...more

Before tasting Lisa's books I used to think that Agatha Christie was the greatest but Lisa had it all. The Other Daughter made a turning point in my life. At first, I was dissatisfied by the story of Russell Lee Holme at the beginning of the book, though the adventure and the challenge started right after.

The connection between Melanie Stoke and Meagan Stoke through the whole story, how each character comes from the same denominator, how each character holds a key to the unsolved mystery are sur...more

In 1977 a man named Russell Lee Holmes was put to death for murdering six young children. It was believed that Russell was single and had no children. The day he was to die, he admits to a local reporter that he also killed 4-year old Meagan Stokes five years earlier.

On the same night he is put to death, a
9-year old child is found drugged and abandoned at a Boston hospital by none other than Dr. Harper Stokes, Meagan's father. The Stokes adopt the abandoned girl (Melanie) and for twenty years th...more

I am not one to recap a book play by play and I don't like to give spoilers so instead I will just summarize my feelings. Lisa Gardner is a new author to me. I have found I have read and re read all of my favorites that I needed to branch out and discover a new author. Iris Johansen had some good things to say about Gardner so I decided to check her out. The one word that comes to mind in describing this book is WOW. The plot summary moves along pretty well. I found that I had to pay attention a...more

Twenty years ago, Melanie Stokes was abandoned in a Boston hospital, then adopted by a wealthy couple. Gifted with a loving family, Melanie has always considered herself lucky. Until tonight.

Tonight, a has-been reporter turns up investigating her past. Tonight the first note arrives, saying, "You Get What You Deserve." And tonight, Melanie has her first, horrifying vision of the past.

Melanie has no memory of her life before the adoption. Now someone wants to give it back, even if it includes the...more

I was really, really hesitant to read this, after reading the Perfect Husband. I really had a hard time reading the Perfect Husband. Part of that was the fact that I couldn't connect or sympathize with the lead characters. Its much easier to do that in this book. What complicated story. It really had me fooled.

I much say though, even only have read two of Lisa Gardner's books, I think she seems to have a bit of a dark, unsettling aspect that I don't think I'm comfortable with. An abusive, seria...more

I made it halfway through this book before I realized that Lisa Gardner is unpardonably boring when there's nothing in the plot to shock or startle you. Say Goodbye was good partly because there was the lurking, facinatingly hideous threat of spiders to lure you into continuing, and because it was very sensationalist in it's writing style, but in The Other Daughter there is no element of sensation. The closest thing to it is the identity of the titular character's true parents, and even then, th...more

Riveting story involving the FBI, healthcare fraud, a serial killer,
murder and a wealthy, rather deviant family.
As the story opens, a serial killer is being put to death and
a 9 year old girl without a remembered past is found
in a hospital room.
The girl replaces the daughter of a wealthy cardiologist at
the hospital who the serial killer confessed to murdering.
Now 25 years later, Melanie Stokes is being encouraged
to remember her past. The FBI has been alerted to
unethical practices by her ado...more

This book was moderately enjoyable. I felt like the author was "telling" me the story in very convenient ways, rather than showing the story and allowing it to unfold. The dialogue was forced in some places, corney in others. I'd read other reviews about the twists and plot turns, but honestly I saw most of them coming a mile away...perhaps because I knew to expect them. I hadn't figured out the entire mystery until the end but I wasn't that impressed once the mystery was solved. I just didn't c...more

I just finished "The Other Daughter" by Lisa Gardner on the 30th or 31st. It was an amazing book, and only took me a few days to read. It revolves around a woman around my age named Melanie Stokes. She was adopted by a rich family who took really good care of her. And then a reporter shows up and tells her about everything he dug up on her past. The book gets really intense from there. The cast of characters is really well described. I felt like I knew each and every one of them. I was happy whe...more

I read a lot of trashy thrillers, so I have a high tolerance for suspension of disbelief, but the plot of book was more than I could manage. There's a girl who may or may not be the daughter of a serial killer, and may or may not have been adopted by the family of one of his victims, and the family may or may not have actually killed their biological daughter in a massive conspiracy. Meanwhile, of course the FBI agent falls desperately in love with the maybe-serial-killer-daughter protagonist. Y...more

this was one of the books the author so nicely sent me for free

this one was about a family, the dad was a doctor, the son was gay and the mom drank. the 4 yr old daughter was kidnapped.

the man who confessed to killing her was killed on death row

the dad adopted another daughter, who at the end of the book, turned out to be the same one that was 'kidnapped' which he did to get the insurance money. he was also installing pacemakers in people who didnt need them for the money

the girl fell in love wi...more

This one was good, but different. I liked it, and even though I figured out the ending before it was actually revealed, I still have a little trouble swallowing the 'twist'. I can't say why it bothers me because it'll give the story away...
That being said, it is a good book and even though the end raised some questions with the twist, I still reccommend it to mystery/romance readers. It would have been a 5 star rating had it not been for my own issues with the end...Give it a try, I think you'll...more

I love how Lisa Gardner gets right off to action in most of her books! And this one did not disappoint! You start off with an exacution and move right into the life of Melanie Sstokess adopted 9 year without a past. There are several key players that each have a significant part in Melanie's life past present and future. There is not a dull moment in this book. You have to pay close attention or you might miss the clues to " daddy's girl". Of course you got a little romance mixed into this actio...more
