This is listed a little strangley, but The Clan of the Cave Bear, The Valley of Horses and The Mammoth Hunters are actually three seperate books in Jean M. Auel's Earth's Children series. I have read these first three which were wonderful and am currently on book 4 in the series, The Plains of Passage.

The series follows Ayla, a cro-magnon child who is orphaned by an earthquake and then rescued and taken in by The Clan (neaderthals)circa 10,000 B.C. The books are meticulously researched a...more

This is a wonderful historical fiction story is about a young girl, Ayla who, as a result of a earthquake is lost to her parents and left to be raised by this clan of the cave bear. The series follows her life as she grows from young child to adulthood. I read this series years after they were originally published, which allowed me to read all five books without a lapse. I loved the first three books of the series but by the fourth (The Plains of Passage) and fifth (The Shelters of Stone), I ...more

Okay, I admit that I have not read it in the combined format, but I have read the three individual books.

Warning-this is not my usual genre.

The Earth's Children series is historical fiction-way historical..think cavemen. And there are more...I recommend reading the whole series. Of course, after the first you will want to. You have to find out what happens to Ayla.

These books are based around an early human girl/woman named Ayla through discovery, maturity, love, and mere survival...more

Read these! Do start with the first one and do them in order. It's fascinating. You really can't put it down

These are some of my favorite books. It is amazing to wonder about life of early man.

Mom sure didn't know what this book contained back when she saw it on the Costco table and suggested it to me, resulting in an early unintentional softcore exposure. These books were favorites of mine for the terrific, pages long enumerations of gathering food, describing food, preparing food, serving food, and eating food. What does mammoth taste like? After reading these books you'll feel like you know. Also, you will be versed in mammoth anatomy, migration, and mating behavior. Deeply re...more

I read thise books right when they came out in the 80's. They were the big, heavily promoted thing back then. They are defenetly the kind of books I would have been totally mortified 10 yrs ago to have addmitted of reading let alone liking. I still blush about all the sex in these books. I was alos very surprised to have found out one of my brother in law reading these and wanting to discuss them with me or anybody else. But like I said they were the big, popular books back in the day. Bryn woul...more

I love this series, including the last one, Shelters of Stone. On the whole a pretty amazing feat of authorship marrying in-depth archaeological research with a quite engrossing storyline. I could do without some of the interminable love-making descriptions as well as the umteenth description of the fauna in various geographic locations, but I do re-visit every now and again.

Ha! I loved these stories. Too bad Hollywood made a stinky movie about the Clan of the Cave Bear - there is just no way anyone could capture on film the intense dialog of grunts, thought, and body language, what were they thinking! The characters in this book I feel were well developed and much more complex due to the fact that they did not speak normal dialog.

The Clan of the Cave Bear was irresitable to me when it first came out, I just could not get enough of it. Of course the second and third were great also but not as good as the first. I did struggle with the immensely detailed descriptions of the flora and fauna. The sex was good though!!!!!!!

Auel is a wonderful writer. Her imagination seems endless. She is so descriptive that you can just imagine the landscape during the ice age and before. Ayla's story is so gripping that I only wish that Auel could write the last book as soon as possible.

Though I read these at least 20 years ago, they were very believable accounts of prehistoric times and neanderthals. The characters are well developed with story lines that keep the reader involved and coming back.

I read this in high school and did a book report on each book. I found it engrossing. It was a good book, but some of the content is adult/mature and this should be considered before reading this series.

I think I only got through the first four books in the series. The first three blew me away. I felt so much empathy for Ayla. If I remember correctly, there were some very steamy scenes, too!

Wonderful stories in my opinion, and there is a fourth one. Leaves little to the imagination when it comes to the sex scenes, but it's set in 'cave man' times so what do you expect?

I think Clan of the Cave Bear was the best of these, but I did like the entire series (what I read of it ... I believe there's a 4th book I did not read).
