A worthy sequel to The Bone Doll's Twin. I didn't find it QUITE as wrenching and creepy as the first book, possibly because much of the mystery surrounding Tobin's and Brother's origins has been cleared up (and Tobin knows who and what he is, now). But this is an excellent middle book, and I am going to go insane if Flewelling doesn't get writing!

The second in the Tamir trilogy, sequel to The Bone Doll's Twin. I really loved the first one, love loved... so why did I only give this one three stars? Hm. Maybe because all of the reasons I was happy with the last one are missing in this book. But it is the second in a trilogy, and as we all know the second is always the setup for the third, so what can you do?

Tobin finally knows that he is truly a woman, destined to rule S...more

I did not like this book as much as the first. Maybe it is because it is a middle book and it seemed that the plot was being stretched out unnecessarily, but it just read slowly (even though I read through it quickly). I also felt that there were a lot of anachronisms and not enough character development (everyone basically seemed to stay the same the whole time - except for Tobin a little).

However, I was still quick to get started on the next book in the series so I could see what would hap...more

In the second book of the Tamir Trilogy, the adventure begins because the child must leave home and join the rest of the world. There is more tension because the risk of discovery is greater. Plus, the "rivals" are now together and must learn together or risk spoiling the plan. In spite of themselves, the rivals like each other, even though they both know they are rivals in some way. There is a sense that the sacrifices and extremes taken will not be ignored and there will be no easy b...more

As enthralling as the first, though a bit slow going. The tangled intrigues of court begin to pop up as Tobin grows and struggles to fit in with his royal cousin and his Companions. All the while Tobin must keep hidden the secret of his true identity and destiny, as well as learn to accept it. The end left me worried for the fate of Tobin's endearing, though misguided, cousin; furious with the controlling, deceitful Niryn; and eager for The Oracle's Queen.

Fantasy novel, fast paced reading, but sadly missing any substantial depth both in character and in plot. Considering the gender change this book is centred around I would've expected more angst (off the battlefield). Or humour.

I expected more from the book, though I shouldn't have, I guess. As a thirteen year old I would've been satisfied. Now, I am not so excited.

Well done sequel. With so many characters it is nice when an author doesn't leave many dangling. Sure, the obvious protagonist and antagonist, but the majority of minor players resolve the "What ever happened to..." questions. I look forward to book three for the resolution of our dichogamous hero.

This is a teenage gender confusion/self discovery book with fantasy novel trappings.

It's fun. The first book in this trilogy, _The Bone Doll's Twin_ is better, but I think this edges out the finale _The Oracle's Queen_ even though I gave them both 3 stars.

So slow for most of the book, in the "years leading up to" bit. But the last 100 pages were worth reading. I think I can see a pattern here.

Mostly though, it reminds me of what I used to like in fantasy novels. I'd gone off them in recent years.

This was enjoyable, suspenseful, and fulfilling. This gender bending tale offers the reader so much in the way of character, plot and scenery. I was just as excited reading the 2nd book as a I was reading the first book. I can't wait to devour the 3rd.

What's worse than being a teenager? After reading this book, I'd have to say secretly being a girl with the physical form of a boy (witch magic and all that, you see) and in love with your (male and decidedly not gay) best friend.

I picked up this second book in the trilogy in a used book shop for next to nothing and it was a pretty slow read. An interesting concept, but could go so much farther with it.

An interesting continuation of the story starting with The Bone Doll's Twin. A continued focus on the concept of self-identity, this is still a surprise hit for me.
