Remember that time when I punched you in the nose? And then you punched me in the nose? And we all started crying and then everything was okay again?

I have fond memories of reading some of these stories in their original form (I think) in my 10th grade French class (sadly, these are the ONLY fond memories I have of studying French!). Goscinny's endearingly naughty little boys made a wonderfully refreshing change from the forced profundities of Le Petit Prince, to say nothing of the banal social lives of the dopey looking Parisian teens who populated a text-book called "Nos Amis". Sempe's cartoonishly simply but wickedly expressive illustrati...more

Max And Lili Visit My School

Today when I arrived at school everyone was very excited because there were two new kids called Max and Lili. My friend Alceste told me they had come from the year 2012 in a time machine, I asked Alceste what a time machine was but he was eating a sandwich, Alceste eats all the time and his mouth is always full so he pointed at Agnan and told me to ask him. Agnan is top of the class and the teacher's pet, he's no fun because he wears glasses so you can't hit him when...more

I read this book to review for the library I work at, and I seriously just pulled it off the shelf because I liked the way the cover looked. It's about a young French boy, Nicholas, and his school friends. It's written in first-person as Nicholas, and what I found particularly endearing was the way the sentences read as though they were really written by a seven year old. They run on, but are clear to understand. Each chapter is like a short story or an individual episode, and his reactions to t...more

I found myself laughing out loud several times while reading this book! I also found myself reading it out loud to anyone in my family who would listen. It gave me a glimpse into the mind of my boy and my overgrown boy (husband). So if you want to kind of see how your 7ish year old boy (and his friends) think, read this hilarious book! Sooo cute.

My favorite metro book in France. I sometimes had to be really refrain myself from laughing out loud (I got really good at disguising laughter with a cough).

Very cute. Actually kind of a strange reading experience: I picked up the book in the first place because the rest of the books in the series have fabulous textured covers that look like burlap, and I want to read them (book one doesn't have that cover, though, so I just needed it as a stepping stone). Then I started reading and while I thought it was funny, I just wasn't clicking with it, and thought Oh no, I'm not going to want to read the others after this. But I kept finishing a chapter and...more

Cependa...more

I started reading this with my French tutor last fall, but I finally got around to finish all of the episodes. There are laugh-out-loud moments in this book, but I was especially stunned by all of the violence in it. I didn't catch that so much the last time I read a Petit Nicolas book. I guess little kids are like that, but it was strange.

Great, though, especially if you're looking for a enjoyable book that isn't too hard in French.

Nicholas - written by Rene Goscinny, (who wrote Asterix) and illustrated by Jean-Jacques Sempe.

Originally published in France, 1959, as "Le petit Nicolas", this edition was first published in 2005 (my version from 2007). Translated by Anthea Bell.

I should admit outright I was never much of a fan of Asterix. I never really got the humour. Maybe 'cause I'm a girl - my brothers all liked them. And so perhaps some of the story here is not my thing because it is so male-centric.

Each chapter stands as...more

Cute kids book, translated from French. Tells the story of Nicholas, a trouble-loving little boy and his equally mischievious classmates. Told in a breathless, run-on sentence kind of voice that's kind of fun to read, with simple but charming illustrations. Fun to try to spot the European cultural differences that defied translation...

My husband & I love the series so much that we decided to name our child after the main character.

What is not to love about Nicholas. He is small, cutely naughty & believes to have the best parents in the world.

Nicholas is always up to something, mostly not good. He has group of friends alike him and they all get in trouble all the time & love playing.

Mikolay’s world is very simple, not too complicated by any kind of worries & full of childhood adventures, even though he isn’t an...more

My French professor made us read this book in her French 5 class. While I found myself looking up a bunch of words (forced to skip French 4 because my college cut down on classes), the short stories were absolutely adorable. I don't recall my parents ever reading me such cute stories.

I found myself grinning throughout reading each chapter. Whether it's Le Petit Nicolas's opinion on something small (his class photo) or the little games (Cowboys & Indians) he plays with his friends, each story...more

Reading Le Petit Nicolas series was a great way to improve my fluency in French. It was easy enough to read for pleasure and the vocabulary repeated enough so I actually learned new words! I used these words in conversation with my French teachers and friends while I lived in France and they were quite impressed because I was using slang. Since this book is written for kids, it helped me learn the language like they did. The sentences were quite easy to translate and I got into the rhythm of the...more

A delightful book of little vignettes from the life of french schoolboy Nicholas. It was originally written in 1959, but only recently translated into English. And I'm most impressed with the translation by Anthea Bell, the childlike tone is wonderfully captured. Illustrations are a highlight also. The only downside of my experience reading this book was that after about a third of the stories, I found it all started to feel quite repetitive. The presentation of this edition by Phaidon is amazin...more

When I was a child, this was probably my favorite book, and both my little brothers' favorite as well. As soon as I learned to read in the early 1970s, we read it over and over and over again, laughing ourselves sick each time... Unfortunately, my mother loaned our copy to one of her professors in the School of Education at Eastern Michigan University at some point in the early 1980s, and we never saw it again. I've been intermittently searching for another copy for the past 25 years, but never...more

I judged a book by its spine and chose this book off the shelf at the library!

This is a book originally written in French which has been translated into English. It's told in the point-of-view of a little boy, probably about seven years old. He gets into a ton of funny situations and he is always in trouble and fighting with his friends.

This is like the French version of Junie B. Jones, in that both of the books have a very authentic kid voice! This book was funny, and it really sounded like a s...more

This book (and its sequels) was a recommendation from my 11 year old niece. It was funny, with the logic and humor of young boys who get into a lot of trouble, but who don't understand why the adults are all exasperated. The chapters are short, so it was a pretty quick read, but I have to say that it didn't hold my attention very well. I think I would have enjoyed it more if I was between 8-12 years old. I don't think I'm going to be reading any of the sequels, but I think this one was worth it,...more

The story is told from the view point of the main character which is Nicholas. The book contains 19 stories in which Nicholas and his friends some get into trouble. There is a various setting like the school, playground, at his house among a few. The main idea of the book is that it doesn't matter how much you may fight with your friends because at the end they are still your friends. Also, to let imagination go wild. I would recommend this book because it is very entertaining and you...more

I can't believe I forgot we got to read about Petit Nicolas in French class. I think it was for a university course, but it was long enough ago, I cannot say. I do remember that Nicolas has a ridiculously dry sense of humor for a seven-year-old, and the Goscinny illustrations are pretty great. I should own these, eventually. Maybe for mes enfants, when I have some of my own. My dad always said I had a very dry wit; maybe, being mine, my petits will better be able to appreciate Nicolas for his.

What a delightful book for kids-written about 50 years ago by the author of the Asterix comics-boy is it funny! Sometimes parents at the library where I work will ask about male equivalents to Junie B Jones. While I don't think it's fair to compare these two-I would say that kids who like Junie B will probably like Nicholas. And it's good fun for adults who just want something light and silly to pick up and put down easily (the chapters are only a few pages long each). The author has a way with...more

An adorable, endearing, comical collection of short stories told from the point of view of a 7 year old French boy. Rambling run-on sentences that are both nonsensical, yet understandable and utterly charming. The humor and woes of childhood certainly don't get lost in-between cultures, and there are some serious laugh-out-loud, "oh my god I've been there" moments. This is also a good book for those who are looking to practice their French comprehension skills, as it is relatively easy grammar a...more

What a hysterical book! This is a French translation that was originally published in 1959, so it depicts a time that has gone by (Nicholas points out that his family doesn't have a television yet). But both kids and adults will enjoy this first person account of incidents in Nicholas' life. We see how much fun young boys have just being boys. For instance, Nicholas describes playing cowboys with his friends. When no one will volunteer to be tied up to be the prisoner, his dad volunteers. This p...more
