This is one of the few picture books that brings tears to my eyes when I read it. It's a beautifully nuanced story that manages to be about relationships, culture, disability, and time without being preachy. The narrative is unusual because it is a dialogue between a grandfather and his grandson. They are reminiscing about important events in the boy's life. this book is not popular with Native peoples (see oyete.com).
At the same time, the stereotypes it teaches must NOT be all people learn about-- but it's probably ok to also learn those. These aren't negative images...

Read in January, 1992
I wrote a paper on this book in a Children's Literature class in college. The illustrations are GORGEOUS. I'll have to see if I can find the book and decide if the text stands up to my memory of it.
